Very interesting! It's a beautiful plant. I like native plants. Here in the Mediterranean, I have planted Rosmarinus, Origanum and always have our native Salvia officinalis too, and bees, bumblebees and butterflies love it. Happy gardening and have a nice day!💗🌵☮️🌺
Jason, my white sage has 5’ tall spikes with flowers! Growing nicely I’d say, but what about pruning and when? The stems are hollow mostly and although strong, the wind up in the high desert can break them. Should I just let them die back naturally ?
Nice! Sounds like you're taking excellent care of it!👍 Mine are doing the similar where I live; the flowers have finished and gone to seed. If you're gonna save seed, cut some of the flower spikes off down to a healthy leaf node and hang the spikes in a dry area, with some shade or even in the garage for a couple weeks to month, shake out seeds and store. If just pruning, I'd prune the spikes down to a healthy leaf node, just don't cut below growth (leaves) as you would for lavender👍. If you harvest leaves for smudge sticks, I'd do that very late summer just as the weather begins to cool, that way you get the 'summer foliage' that has more oil and less water, for better aroma when smudging. Never prune more than one 3rd of the plant in a session and never prune in wet weather👍. I keep the spent flower spikes and let them dry in a wheel barrel outside in the shade, before I run them through a wood chipper, white sage is a great mulch addition as it adds that wonderful aroma and I think repels some insects! Hope this helps🙂!
Hi Susan! I've never been to the UK, but I here the winters are cold; if you cut the plant back and bring it indoors until the weather warms, it's worth a try. I think you definitely can grow it as an annual👍🙂🌿!
@@JasonsGreenSleeves Thank you Jason! I have started some from seeds and they seem to be doing well so far, 6cm tall! its still far too cold over here to put them outside, but do you have any tips for transition from warm house to garden please!? 🌦🌬 Thank you 💚
@@susanroe5442 That's wonderful Susan! Sounds like you're off to a great start! Once chance of freezing has passed, move plants outdoors to a bright shady spot for a couple weeks, so they adapt to being outdoors and the temperature fluctuations, then move to a slightly brighter spot, leave for a few days and so on until you have it in a full sun (or mostly sun) location for this particular plant (Salvia apiana). When outside, it may want just a tad bit more water at first until it establishes. :-)!
Hi Mark, sorry to hear they're all out. Here's a link to a site that sells it; they're out of stock now, but should at some point have it in stock again. Maybe try giving them a call to see if they know when they'll have it in. Hope this helps🙂. I can add that I order from another place called Mountain Valley Growers… (from Chicago) but you have to check when this type of plants are for sale (I think May was the date for my zone) but I’m pretty sure that for that zone might be an early date… I would definetly check Jasón recommendation! Thank you! 🙏🏼🕊
Hi friend! Here's a link for organic white sage seeds: strictlymedicinalseeds.com/product/sage-white-salvia-apiana-seeds-organic/ I hope this helps :-).
Hi Samantha, To my knowledge, the Salvia apiana compacta is a specific variety of white sage that is smaller by nature, so not strictly a clone. It grows to about 18inches-2 feet tall by 3-4 feet wide. It grows relatively slow and is easy to keep small 18in X 18in. Even though it's not a clone, it is possible to grow this plant from cuttings, just usually seed is easier. :-)
@@JasonsGreenSleeves I would like a few of those I'm building a 17-18 x 2 foot wide garden bed it would like to add two one on each end but the place I asked for to buy at moosa creek won't sell to me.... If I'd known Sooner I would of wanted the compact sage but I have room for 6 to 8 larger ones. :0)
So sorry to hear that your zone doesn't work for Salvia apiana. I'm not sure where you live, but you might be able to grow it outdoors as an annual? If you get the compact variety, you could always try growing it in a pot and moving it in during the winter; just put a grow light and timer on it and watch out for any pests (aphids sometimes try to take up residence on this plant when it's grown in doors; just brush them off/spray plant a little with organic indoor insecticidal soap). Hope this helps.
Thank you for this video. The tips are super helpful.
You’re most welcome Natalia!

I have been searching native plant nurseries here in Southern California and all say it's out of stock or unavailable. Suggestions? Thanks, Mark

That's for zones 8-10 not my zone so it's frustrating not to be able to get a plant for my garden. So disappointed.
