Yeah, I guess the shield is suppose to signify their sight is blocked when that close

Lol didn't realize this ^^ I was like "man this puzzle is impossible" until i read this, then it became quite easy xD

I didn't realize you can go behind their back so I played countless times to win by keeping more than 3 distance from them.

Man this puzzle is awful.. So many untold rules that you have to just "figure out for yourself"

Yeah
I was thinking about this for around half an hour and then suddenly realized that you can go behind their back after which I could do it with 3 cards remaining(but I escaped by moving down vertically). This puzzle is bad because it is extremely easy but the lack of clarity leads to lots of re-plays.
