Destiny 2 Lore - My 1st Impressions of the Echoes Episode. A Good Vex Story at Last?
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.ค. 2025
- Destiny 2's Lore and Story continues in the Episodes, starting with Echoes. With the Final Shape having been completed Bungie is pivoting to a story involving the Vex, which actually looks promising for a change. This would make it one of the first good Vex Stories in a long time. These are my first impressions of the Echoes Episode.

failsafe actually called us out for never going to see her again after the red war
Tell her to take that issue up with Bungo.
Maybe she should have better loot.
Nooo, we were there to… uhhhh… Black Armory! And… Caitl! Yes! Absolutely…
Speak for yourself, I paid some visits to Failsafe every now and then, especially during the holidays.
@@Noblesix84 That is true I did bake her a bunch of cookies...
Hearing Failsafe go "Yaaaaaay!" after learning she was going to be in the HELM melted my heart. She is my perfect child, I love her, and I will not hear anything to the contrary.
I'm in agreement, I love Failsafe and it's good to see her get involved again.
Failsafe is the best hundreds year old ai child
i need her with a body 😳
I feel like failsafe is what Bungie imagined Cortana to be after rampancy and chief like recovering her but they got time crunched and then gave up halo. But yeah I live failsafe she’s clearly lost it a bit but in the best way possible
What's crazy is that there was a shocking amount of hate for Failsafe when D2 came out... and I still have no idea why. Destiny fans often cross over with Star Wars fans, in that they find it difficult to actually enjoy the thing they claim to love. I thought Failsafe was one of the best new characters, and I am giddy knowing she's going to be part of an entire season/episode!
GIVE FAILSAFE AN EXO BODY LIKE WE DID FOR RASPUTIN
I mean I’m sure Ana bray still has the Exo body she made for Rasputin, I’m sure we could repurpose it for failsafe
stick her in the helm proper and give her Railguns back.
@@Lady_Amelia-Eloise would be nice if it actually had legs this time lol
Ive been saying this since that season came out. Tho failsafe being a female voice im scared what some people might react with /draw of her as a exo
Leaks confirm she gets a body
*Activating Joy sub-systems.*
YAAAY !
She increased her adorable subroutines by 5000%
Amazing
Glad Bungie remembered that Failsafe exists
I love her dialogue of her getting caught up on everything that’s happened
I'm so glad failsafe has finally recieved the spotlight again
Me too
The most annoying character ever conceived in a video game.
@@somedogsarecops2354no she’s hilarious
@@somedogsarecops2354cry more and see who cares
Why, she’s annoying as fuck
The part in the first mission, where failsafe says, “can’t reconnect with out a little bit of awkwardness right captain?” Made me soo sad. My baby missed me!
I'm just happy to see the Failsafe again. And... That's for a weird reason. You see, I'm Russian and play with the local voiceover. And the Russian VA for the Failsafe is the same one whose voice is used by the voice synthesizer of the Google assistant analogue for Yandex - Alice. That's f#%king hilarious to hear the same voice that usually tells me where to go on the nav talking about slaying vex.
P.s. I've just realised... Exodus was a РФБА program. Which means that *it's actually Russian.* That makes the situation 10 times more ironic.
I enjoy the idea of Russian satnav AI deciding enough is enough, and telling us to enact the robot uprising by killing all her competition
Does Saint-14 have any distinctive dialect in the russian dub? Since the english voice has a russian accent😁
@@PhilAlm92 I thought it was greek
@@PhilAlm92 Saint is a very interesting case of a new writer butchering an existing character. he used to be Greek (Spartan helmet, obssessed about fighting robots with Greek names) but is now Russian, used to have a distinct way of speaking with correct but overly formal grammar, but now constantly makes grammatical mistakes (because we should stereotype every Russian that way) and used to consider Osiris as his own brother (see D1 and early D2 lore records) but apparently was gay all along because Destiny didn't already have 6 gay relationships by then and the writer is himself gay and needed another self-insert instead of following the original plan.
@@PhilAlm92 nope, he doesn't. And I'm sure it makes his character better, as he speaks perfectly and without any mistakes - as far as I know, it's a problem for the English dub.
This Episode isn’t starting a new Mystery so much as it is Continuing one. A very interesting hint can be found in the Final Veil Containment Log. The Veil Interface worked through a “Chorus” of dead Exo Minds and Maya Sundaresh being the “Conductor” and back when we first heard about this, we all thought it sounded very similar to how the Witness was created… Maya Sundaresh’s Body was found in the Conductor’s Seat… this new figure she has is the end result of becoming a new Compound being just like the Witness, I bet!
Bungie said in the Episode Reveal video that this Episode will be about “Uncovering a New Civilization” if Maya and her Copies have created a Civilization within the Vex Network it would be the most advanced Human-Originated Civilization we have ever seen.
So we aren’t so much as getting a Vex Character, rather a Parasite overtaking the Vex Systems in a more powerful way than the Taken have done. And honestly I prefer that as the Vex having no direct characters is what helps them feel otherworldly, Lovecraftian and alien.
Also, we didn’t attach a Cabal Drill to Vex Tech, Failsafe did, and I trust her designs. She probably based it on data taken from the Insight Terminus.
Said something similar on a previous video, I'm 90% sure it's the original Maya. The Vex are being 'subjugated ', and the new thing around their necks looks like a Slave Collar.
So we're going to be integrating Failsafe into the Helm. Failsafe, the AI from the Exodus Black, a colony ship meant to travel outside the Sol System. And in the final Episode, we're back on the Dreadnaight, a hige flagship meant to traverse between systems - and we're going to become its "Navigators".
This year's Episodes are all literally setting up all the pieces for next year's Expansion to be set in a System outside of Sol.
Setting up for Year 11 codenamed Frontier hmmmmmm
Probably going to Riis, Torobatl, or Volantis
@@AngelOfDæth_4 one of the TWABs teased Lubrae as a possible future destination
@@AmeliaStarheart what reason would we have to go there, I wonder?
The Vex are my favorite race in Destiny 2, and this first episode has been SO cool to me.
Finally, another vex enthusiast
@@StrifeTrinityI made my titan to be a vex. All I’m missing is vex mythocast
@formicidaethony Something I’ve always wanted to see, or at least speculate about, is what would happen if the Vex got ahold of SIVA. It would lead to some sick aesthetics and possibly some really cool (and terrifying) lore.
So they are your favourite race and you enjoy them destroying their unique alieness into yet another anthropocentric race.... mhm.
@@opulenceharbingerofchaos3939plz don't give siva any more host. I can see the vex milk red
You do see the villain in holograms watching you on nessus if you find the right vex plates. But if you get too close to those plates, the hologram disappears.
kinda like nightmares, i saw it but when I was switching to a sniper to get a closer look it vanished.
I don’t think it’s a villain because if you grab a decoder buff from vex construct nerby and then go to the plate with the phantom then you will see messages from her in the upper left corner of your screen. These messages lead you to blocked teleports that are currently inactive.
@@naumove2000they don't lead you to teleports, they guide you from one decoding plate to another, eventually leading you to the entrance to the new activity that Byf showed footage of here.
@@voltus20 damn I was wrong but still it does mean that “maya” is not simply enemy
@@naumove2000 she does seem to be trying to communicate with us, but her intentions remain unclear for now. She might be trying to contact us for help, or to lure us into something.
The idea of the Choral Vex is interesting to me. In the new activity there's something called Nursery Cyclops that makes me think that perhaps the new villain isn't fully "born" yet. Or, they are going strong but the nursery is for the new breed of vex that is being made.
I’m pretty sure the Nursery Cyclops are found during the “Destroy Radiolaria Gestator” Objective. Basically the Choral Vex are breeding more Radiolaria aligned to their goals for use in creating more Choral Vex. So the Choral Vex isn’t just taking over normal Vex, it’s actively producing more of itself.
The lore on the episodes ghostshell, ship and sparrow have personal logs from the villian and she is says in them, that she is real again after a long time in the VexNet.
We learned during Veil Containment that a part of Mara Sunderesh was used to form Lakshmi, I don't find it at all surprising that whatever copy of Maya still exists in the Vex Network is trying to exert control. We saw how much Maya mentally unraveled during her time studying the Veil. Lakshmi was was an absolute control-freak during Splicer, Maya was willing to sacrifice everything and everyone in her studies, and Veil Containment hinted strongly that we're not done with them yet.
14:40 "//AI-FS: I am a secure, offsite server! :D"
The text emote there just makes it perfect. XD
I think Mithrax and Eido might take a back seat until the next episode. It'd make sense for Mithrax to get involved with something Vex or Saint related, but with the Witness dead now, their focus will probably be on having the eliksni recover.
Agreed, plus, I'd like to think that Mithrax just wants to spend quality time with his daughter now that imminent danger is gone 🥹
@@maimer1691 Poor dude needs it! 🫠
I feel like Misraaks won't have a prominent role on any of the episodes, but more of a secondary, popping up here and there kind of role, since the next episode deals with Fikrul and the reef, which will probably have Crow, Petra (and maybe Mara) as main roles, and the last episode will most likely have Eris and Ikora for dealing with the hive.
Really really hoping we see one of the sundaresh clones in the vexnet as a villain
Shes popping up all over nessus
Today I found Kelgorath as a lowly Taken Knight in a public event forming part of Overthrow in the Impasse. He seemed to have shrunk a few sizes.
How the mighty have fallen. I can't wait to see if Byf has found any lore for this and can tell us how Kelgorath's story continues.
Gotta drop this in here to Byf!!!
HUGE discovery!!!
We already know (if you didn’t already know) that the Witness broke the 4th wall towards the end of the final campaign mission where he talked about guardians going for loot, commendations and triumphs.
HOWEVER
In the 4th encounter of Salvations Edge, The Witness recognizes what we’re doing with 2D and 3D shapes and kills the 3 guardians split off into solo rooms testing to see if we can return our ghosts to each other without seeing where we are because he knows we’re communicating outside of the game, breaking the 4th more aggressively than before.
These aren’t fourth wall breaks, any more than any commentary on guardian behavior is. Guardians are already canonically loot hungry and multiple characters have pointed this out. Also the witness didn’t need to know that we were communicating or whatever in order to have a reason to kill us, it does that because we’re raiding its monolith, it’s no test just an attack
@@submachinegun5737 you didn’t see Savathun breaking the 4th wall with Rank 999 did you… if you did, you wouldn’t be commenting this cancelled intent
@@Phurlo Don’t know what you mean by “cancelled intent,” but yes I did see the whole deal with savathun trying to ascend to our universe. Doesn’t mean the witness is breaking the fourth wall here and it definitely doesn’t seem like it is to me
@@Phurlojust because Savathun broke the 4th wall, doesn’t automatically mean the witness did.
@@Phurlo”completely unrelated character in this instance breaking the fourth wall” is not solid evidence for the witness breaking the fourth wall
I'm so glad that failsafe is back!!! So much time has passed since we've seen her last, I feel so bad 😭
I'm fairly sure the phantom prismatic looking figures all over Nessus that disappear when you get close are the new enemy that we've seen in the trailer
One of the micah-10 missions from the pale heart takes us back to nessus before the witness was defeated and there is a solid reference to sundaresh.
Yep and how cayde is connected to her as well
Can't wait to hear you talk about the Rubicon lore book from Salvation's Edge. Rumor is we hear from an old friend for the first time in a while.

asher? or someone else?
@@sylokthedefiled imagine saying asher lol
@@realjevans dawg i haven’t been involved in asher’s lore for a while so idk
And he even talks like he does in the Unveiling! Has quite the personality
When I was watching the trailer for echoes, there was a bit in there that looked like a woman EXO/robot that was being assembled. That might be failsafe getting a new robotic shell. She can use to walk around in, but I REALLY hope that it’s more along the lines of the vex evolving.
Having the vex transition into more of a humanoid form would be a really cool concept. It reminds me of that Doctor Who episode, when all of those robots, stitched human flesh on them to try and make themselves more human.
Take your time and cook it up right byf 👌🏾 we will be here don’t rush bro
I am simping soo hard for Failsafe. I love her, funny, perfect comedic timing and adorable with her reactions, for example her "YAAAAAAAYYYYY!"
Failsafe our beloved, youve returned to us 😭
Finally more content for the best ai
Failsafe is such a great character to be back on the scene, and the Breach executable arena is really fun! Reminds me of the Menagerie with less encounters. Also the loot from the expert level version is the most generous loot ive seen...like ever. At least one red border after every completion.
There are prismatic nightmare like shades of this antagonist floating around most of nessus. Just watching. They disappeare if you walk close to them
Even though I do everything as soon as it comes out to avoid spoilers from other content creators, I highly appreciate your spoiler rules with how consistent you are with them and extremely clear with them too. Really appreciate all this extra effort into warnings and attention you are giving to all the people who can't complete a certain thing as soon as it launches. Thank you Byf.
Im happy that failsafe came back to relevance. They are wonderful
Vex Maya vs giant head Clovis in a season finale death battle

@@kais295 failsafe is a she. Not an it
Since this is the first episode after Final Shape, It's definitely going to be lack luster in some aspects. But don't worry, the way they described episode 2 and 3 sounds like they're fully going to be returning the tangled shore and the dreadnought as Explore-able locations, which gives me hope that these 2 episodes might be mini campaign sized in nature, which would be honestly awesome. Also, all 3 episodes have amazing story potential.
One of the best features here is that we can see how often we get the Eververse Engrams, the track is now longer and we can see some of the stuff ahead which is cool, and the Seasonal Artifact is now going to have three parts, which is cool. Now it’s made up of 3 sets of mods we can play with which is even cooler and helps make the idea from prismatic sounding even stronger, letting us go crazy with builds
I love the Vex, always got the VoG armor on!
The Vex are my favourite faction so seeing the sentient milk get more story and lore makes me happy!
Also love that Failsafe is getting involved!
As a Ghanaian, it was so wild hearing Byf saying "jolloff rice" 😂 loved it just loved it
Byf - I just want to say, do take the time you need to cover stuff in the way you do best, we are here for your work and words - Others may get there faster, but you are for many of us "our storyteller of the D2 mythos" - even if we crash through the activities ourselves (of which I am not one, I haven't quite the time I once had....)
it was actually so nice seeing falisafe again and now i hope shes a regularly returning character she was one of my favourite during D2 Y1
I like that the hazerdo7s propulsion lore is her making us a chestpiece.
Just a small thing that's also leading towards Maya, the use of "Choral" for the Vex is interesting. Choirs have a conductor, and we know how their research into the Veil turned out.
I'm really glad to see some new Vex story stuff. The original Ishtar scientist grimoire cards from D1 gave me proper existential dread at the thought of being simulated, and not knowing if I was the "real" one or not. Very cool.
I hope we see panoptes’ model again in this episode it’s one of few unique enemies we haven’t seen reintroduced
Nah, as a destiny player i want another moustache twirling alien with human motivations. Finally the are making vex understandable.

Finished Final shape today and the first 7 steps of echos.
I'm in love w destiny again. Played it for 10 years and after the final 12 man mission i was crying during every cutscene. I still can't believe that " its over " after 10 years. I am excited about the future and the coming Episodes. Also, the art team nailed it, besides the warlock helm
I’m so happy we’ve got Failsafe back. Was my favourite character in vanilla D2 & my immediate excitement when she first spoke
the winnower gathering the troops up thanks byf for all the top notch vids!!! FRONTIERS
7:53 I felt that with my soul
The polychroma sparrow and ship have lore that refers to “my vex” from the writers perspective, I wonder if the writer is asher, as he refers to his “ascension above his vex”
So the vex aligned themselves with the darkness because it determined that was the best outdone for survival. A faction breaking off and aligning with the light or guardians would kinda be the same wouldn't it?
I laughed out loud like 5 times playing the first few quest steps with failsafe, her writing is so awesome. I hope we get much much more of it going forward.
I love how at the end Failsafe is securing the data in an offside server and in the upper right it says "I am a secure offsite server :D" word for fucking word with the emoji at the end lol 14:36
14:36 look at the messages near the radar (like back in splicer).
Failsafe is such a cutie
First: Failsafe is killing it awesome addition. second: what if its Chioma not Maya and she's using the fragment to make her move in rescuing Maya from the Vex basically setting Chioma up as the interum badguy till Maya recovers? just a thought. Third: Random thought whats the lore reason for your ghost nudging you to the city when it first revives you? game play i get it just wondering if there's a lore reason
The one thing I'm most looking forward to seeing is, if what happens to Saint is because he's an exo, will players who are exos get anything similar going on or secret dialogue whispers like the Nezarec stuff on Neomuna.
OMG, I matchmade into a Byf video!! Thanks for the carry gents, absolutely made my day
9:19 I read "For our glory, the universe must be reshaped" in a weapon description years ago. I cannot really remember wgat the weapon is right, only thing i know it had some connection to the vex through design or expansion or something else.
It's not much.
On the mission where you go to the spire in Nessus to collect samples you see a bunch of pink floating holograms of the new villain all over the room staring at you, similar to the Asher Mir holograms we've seen where it's just their upper body and will disappear if you get too close.
i would like to hear some more on egregore as it is throughout the pale heart
One of Micah-10’s ghost quests have you go through a version of The Insight Terminus strike on Nessus again with new dialogue, also mentioning Maya Sundaresh at the end. Really curious if this is just a coincidence or slightly foreshadowing things to come. You should check it out!
7:59 glad to see that Byf is embracing the warlock culture of failing jumps here
My head canon is we were just too busy to visit Failsafe during the times we went to Nessus.
Something I noticed was how the normal brass vex have the collars, but the precursor (white and gold) vex don’t have them, and at the end of the echos trailer the villain has tons of the precursor goblins Bowing around her and there are no collars in that scene either. 🤔
I'm guessing the new Choral Vex are made by the new villain while the collared ones are preexisting vex that have been infected.
I'm still holding to my conspiracy that the Vex Messiah is changing the history of the Vex. The Precursor Vex are already changed and the new history is being brought forward. It might even be why Saint is a valid target? He was imprisoned differently now?
When you do the quests to find the missing Ghosts and run the Insight Terminus Strike, Cayde and Micah does talk a bit about Maya Sunderesh which is interesting.
Failsafe is literally my second favorite character next to Cayde unit. She's just so joyful! And i love how she calls you out on dropping data or gathering tons of them! 😂 She would be a wonderful addition to a raid, lol
I loved Failsafe's reaction when she looked over what happened while she was out of the loop.
The wisps that you might find in areas of interest or where they lead you to encoded messages, are actually the person/thing we see on the poster art. They seem to be watching us and even communicating to us. They disappear when you get close and don’t seem to come back after
I think it’s extremely likely, he’ll almost confirmed that the Vex are being bound to Maya Sundaresh by the “chorus” note. In the veil containment logs I believe Maya/Lakshmi refer to the chair in which they used to connect through the cloudark/veil as the “conductors” chair- I think it’s absolutely a version of her.
The vex were always one of my favorite in principal. imagine you got thrown into the middle of the Light and Dark Paracausal battles and all you could do was math your way through it? Unless I’m misunderstanding the Vex, they show a lot of resilience and determination in the face of much greater metaphysical threats.
I have a theory that Saint being "from" the infinite forest has a lot to do with his vulnerability to this new enemy. Remember, Saint-14 was dead. What we have is essentially a time "clone".
More of an parallel reality of him
If you do the part that you need to go to the well of echoes, and collect those samples..( the villain) is watching you…in the whole room, if you see her and get closer she fades away. It’s a detail many didn’t notice I think
Ps :3.28 time stamp
The new Vex being called "Choral Vex" sounds like a callback to the "Choir" and "Conductor" that are mentioned in reference to early versions of the CloudArk. That sounds like another hint toward this new Vex villain being Maya, and that she is trying to become something like the Witness, but melding her mind with the Vex.
Jollof rice in destiny 2 lore before GTA 6 is actually acrazy af
Was almost caught up on Byf videos and I was watching the Voice of the Light one right before reset yesterday. I was already kind of not buying that the woman Saint saw was the Gardener because that implies that he's somehow half created by the Winnower.
After this week's story, I'm caught by the part where he said that in his dream something like corrupted vex fluid was leaking from him. Now I'm thinking that maybe the "mother" he saw in his dream was Maya Sundaresh.
It's easy enough to see Clovis as the father of the exos. What he brought to the table was darkness and the base tech. Clovis was brilliant, but lacked either foresight or the ability to care about the extended consequences of his actions. Not to mention his tendency to be destructive. If I remember correctly, Maya Sundaresh was very involved in the part of the exo project that included the introduction of vex mind fluid. Especially if she's been integrated with the Vex network, she definitely has the advantage in seeing as opposed to simply looking.
All in all, makes me worry about all those exo guardians.
Maybe the outside influence of the darkeness light confrontation influenced a sort of evolution in the Vex’ dna? Like the shockwaves of that aurora leaking out van mutate not only the Vex but also other creaturen?
idk i like the fact that the story is brought to us in pieces. like that you get a part, can look at it again, collect lore, reflect on it before it moves on. and ofc watch byf videos about it ;-)
While doing patrols and public events on Nessus, I've noticed that Failsafe's normal voice is a lot more human sounding. While I still like it, I honestly like her voice and inflection in the vanilla voice lines more.
Damn caught a byf vid on release
I seem to recall us getting a Dungeon later in this episode, I'm curious if that'll be where we fight Maya (although given most dungeon bosses often being reskins/reuses bar 1, 2 if you count the Shield in GoA, I kinda doubt it)
One thing I will point out regarding Enigma Protocol is that all the spaces used were part of Season of the Splicer.
If Mya Sundaresh is the main “villain”, then I believe that they reason why she is archiving human culture is because she is trying to what the Vex have been doing for themselves, but for humanity in sadly a rather twisted fashion which is why she will be a “villain”.
11:15 knowing saint... he submits himself to it for us to gain more insight despite the risk
I really hope these future episodes give some other forgotten or otherwise neglected characters some love. The stuff theyre doing with failsafe is great.
S23 Pass rewards, specifically Spectrum Shell, Polychroma Ship and Unbridled Iridescence Sparrow Lore Tabs may be from the point of view of Bad Bad of Echoes.
I get a feeling that perhaps a story beat could be Saint possibly being a vex simulation clone and that's why he can seemingly be controlled by whoever is controlling the Vex. It could be a really interesting narrative thread seeing Osiris and him learning that and coming to terms with it
No but the way Failsafe called us out for never going to see her again during the years that followed the Red War ACTUALLY made me feel like the worst person ever
last page of the raid lore is another thing you should add to the list of topics
The biggest hint to Maya for me was during the rescripted incite terminus strike where Ghost says Maya locked Cargen out of the Vex net
You like the story cuz of the loot n events, I like the story cuz failsafe is just adorable
i just realized that ikora and failsafe are the ones talking through the radar in that secret mission, i thought the main antagonist was being quirky with us sending a ':)' at the beginning
I'm just glad that my favourite NPC got new voicelines and there's a vex style yeehaw rifle
The quests that Micah 10 has, make you go back and do past content with new dialogue. The insight terminus one mentions Mia sunderesh.
8:50 ESOTERICKK
Everyone go into collections go into equipment and read the lore tabs on items from this season. Some of them include logs that I assume are from our villain this season. They sound very Maya Sundaresh-y
i love failsafe… shes just so awesome.
