GoPro Motorplex is a world-class go-kart facility in Mooresville, North Carolina. 3/4 mile track with multiple configurations. Rental karts can reach 60 MPH!
We've been going for 4 years and thought we had done it all. We had no idea that they would let people race in the rain. We found out by complete accident how much fun it was! It was like learning a completely new track. If you can come up with a way to stay warm and dry, it is an absolute blast!
Why did we do it? Well, my friends booked the track in advance for a party. We unfortunately couldn't move the date, so we decided to make the best of 80% showers and 40° F in December. We carefully planned out our layers of sweatshirts, windbreakers, trash bags, duct tape. Some people went and bought rain suits. And for the most part, we all stayed warm and dry (but definitely pack a change of clothes in case)!
The karts were on their normal slicks, which do not tread water very well. The only way to turn was to approach corners very early and slowly - unless you wanted to try your hand at drifting. It was clearly the faster, but more challenging way to take the course. People were slipping and sliding everywhere. I was kind of getting a feel for it, but could not string together a perfect wet lap. But I know it's out there! Can't wait to go back and try to find it!
