    Two years later and the Excalibur is still my go-to fast fun glider along with an MPX Blizzard. The original Durafly tail servos wouldn't center so all four servos were replaced with higher-quality MG. It seemed slow first flight on 4S with the stock 13x8 so I upgraded to 5S and 10x12 Aeronaut with metal spinner and set the brake. Current was still below 50A. Clocked a pass at 127mph. Tweaked the wings so after straightening went with 11x12 4S and keep it under 100mph or so. Yes it carries a fair amount of inertia for diving passes but excels at fast powered passes rather than punch, cut, dive. If the wings were covered or laminated it would no doubt be slightly less draggy and pick up more speed in dives, in addition to making the wings slightly stronger. The fuse failed behind the wing so it was reinforced. Lots of spoileron for landing plus I added a jet-style top-mounted speed brake just for fun. Very capable plane with a few mods.

    Great review, but I'm a little disappointed you didn't take it up high and dive bomb it so you can hear how awesome it sounds with the motor off. It's by far the best feature of this aeroplane and you didn't demonstrate it. I have the Excalibur and absolutely love listening to it go by with the prop off.
    Other than that, you guys are my inspiration for getting into flight and I hope you continue to show and review planes that come out from time to time. I know you love your quads, but please don't stop doing reviews on planes. Thanks Flite Test for everything you do. :)

      I think they did that, but forgot to enable the motor braking before going to the field. So it didn't really get to it's full speed while diving.

    2 kg, is that with packaging? That can't be right for flight ready at least. I have a 2 m EPP-Motorglider that clocks in at around 950g when all equipmen and trimweight is in. It would be nice to have the weight of the shown setup.

    Good review guys, but there are a couple of serious flaws in the Excalibur that have caused total losses that you and your viewers need to know about. 1) The firewall on the first run Excaliburs was not strong enough, and must be reinforced with a 1/32 ply/GF/carbon disk glued to the outside of the firewall to prevent a total failure of the nose when starting or stopping the motor. 2) The area behind the wing where the air vents are is very weak and needs to be strengthened with carbon strip laid into the foam with CA to ensure the fuse does not fail after a few landings. Lots more info on the RCGroups Excalibur thread... www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?2694227-Hobbyking-Durafly-Excalibur-warmliner

    Hi guys. I so pleased to see new durafly releases being reviewed with you guys again, and I'm glad you liked it. The Exaclibur was my first and only warmliner project I brought to market and one of my last full releases wth Durafly before leaving HK, so really happy to see it reviewed here and on the recommendations of the wider community.
    Look forward to more.
    Stuart.

    • @ulaB
      @ulaB 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Stuart, I was pretty surprised when I listened to the podcast the other day. Good luck in whatever you plan on doing in the future - and perhaps you can make it to Flite Fest East this year! You are missing out on something if you don't. :)
      HK needs to enable the active motor braking by default on that bird. Reading through the comments it looks like the FT crew didn't do that before going to the field, so they missed out on the awesome dive-whistling...

    Sorry guys, I really love the show, but this review was way superficial and kinda missed the point on this model.
    Besides show build shots and not much detail on the model, IMHO, you didn't fly it like it's meant to: this is a plane that really picks up speed with the throttle cut and the prop folded!
    You punch it and cut it, you punch it and cut it ...anf it really shines doing really fast passes, whistling by and diving into maneuvers pass after pass. you guys kinda just cruised it... well .. no.
    I have one and love it and the footage really lacked the fast and punchy feel of it.
    Guys, spend some more time with stuff before releasing these reviews, you go through stuff way to fast and sometimes (maybe way too often) you miss out.
    Don't take this the wrong way, I love flitetest, I'm writing this in a constructive manner.

    • @gingermattb
      @gingermattb 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but if they had enabled the brake and really pushed it the nose would probably have fallen off, and/or the rear fuse failed. This is a great flier, but it has some serious structural issues as it comes out of the box.

    • @TheRemizinho
      @TheRemizinho 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      gingermattb I've been pushing mine pretty hard without encountering any structural issues, maybe I was lucky with mine, not sure.
      Only bad thing so far was the canopy lock, started rotating within itself and I jade to glue it to have it working again.

    • @slothy89uni
      @slothy89uni 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nose would fall off? That's a new one. I had a Dynamic-S, the predecessor to the Excalibur, and the only issue was at the top end of the speed range, the controls would flatten reducing control response. The fuse is built tough, high speed gliders like this usually fail by the wing snapping, not the fuse.
      Also I agree with Paulo, they need to fly it like a warm liner. Full throttle climb out to a speck, nose it over, dive in and listen to it squeal past, doing some acro on the way through.

  • @joshuawfinn
    @joshuawfinn 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Josh, please, please let me teach you how to fly a warmliner. If the prop is turning more than 25% of the time, you're not doing it right (and likely about to melt something in the power system). In other news, I ran some calculations on this bird a while back and found out that HK picked a really inefficient prop-motor combo for this airplane--700 W at a pitch speed of only 57 mph (that's more power than I put through my 3 meter, for less performance!). Switching to an Aeronaut 12x10 (or 12x13 if you dare) would make this a real performer for roughly the same power consumption. Lastly, program that brake on your esc. You have no idea how much glide performance you're losing! All the HK fixed wing esc's appear to use the same programming sequence--brake is the first item on the menu.

    how about a Mini Talon challenge:
    1. a water balloon bomber (sure someone won't mind being the target)
    2. the long range flyer (just stuff as much Lipo in there so it barely takes off ;)
    3. the lightning fast flyer (Powerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)
    4. the totally modded BB-gun shooting warbird! (and thke the rest of them down)
    these MT's are so versatile and forgiving, I bet you guys can make some Awesome mods that even the Mini Talon forum coulnd't have imagined!

    Hey Guys,
    Do you think this would be suitable as a 2nd plane? Been flying the FT Arrow for 2 months and I feel relatively secure with it. I would like to know if the Excalibur can be flown a bit slower and carefully to begin with.
    HK just lowered the price and I guess nobody can resist falling in love with the look of it!

  • @erikjede1ste
    @erikjede1ste 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    like your tests very much. but sorry with this one you can do better 😉
    1. activate breaking for gliding , with folded prop you can reach much more speed in a dive.
    2. try the optional 13x8 prop.
    3.try a more low profile cam the gopro session works as a airbrake, runcam works a bit better.
    you misses now 50% more fun with this awsome plane.
    thanks guys 👍👍

    It sure looks amazing. But sins i newer been at the controls of one it is way too powerfull and i like it to go looooong and slow so i can make pictures and scout the terain. There for i would like the rc kit for paper airplanes and hoping its just about keeping the airplane in the sky where i want it to be.

    Nice plane, but you boys need to fly this like a glider/hotliner. That means motor is only for getting up, never ever use motor flying a glider straight and level ;)
    Do it hotliner style and put the throttle on a switch, and the brake on the throttle stick.

  • @osanshouo1684
    @osanshouo1684 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is better to have the plastic spinner than metal. Something is going to give in at the moment of impact, and if the prop, nor the spinner break, energy will transfer to motor parts, and possibly bending the motor center shaft. Much easier and cheaper to replace a spinner or a prop than a motor shaft, and who knows tear the motor mount etc.
    great video, thank you +1

I see this being purchased by me in the near future. Flight Test, these are the type of videos I thoroughly enjoy, planes I buy from hobby stores, not so much building them because I'm not talented enough and motivated enough to do lol. Please do more reviews like this. Josh Scott is the man, love that dude!

    Had this plane for over a year now, crashed it once, but was fixed. It's amazing to fly but a challenge to land without a proper landing strip. Even with spoilerons it comes in so fast.
    And when you order extra prop and spinner, also order some extra bolts because they are not included.

    Since blizzard (multiplex) first introduced there's always another hotliner better than this and then another. Such as exalibur and couple of others. Blizzard is the first of a kind.

    Was just watching the dive footage in this video and was thinking that a great challenge would be 3D printing a functional stuka diving siren for foam models. Would tie in nicely with the 3D printing theme for this year :D

      I've always had a Taranis but have been trying to expand horizons and fly a bit of everything now. When it comes to personal racing I'm still taranis though
