Good video. As I have already dumped my Canon gear and decided Canon did not have its heart in the M platform I went M43- G85. And because I’m a video guy I bought the Leica 12-60. Auto focus is brilliant and it’s parfocal which is a must. Yes, an expensive option to get get good auto focus out of the G85. I do love the colour science out of the Canon, but the bottom line is that there are now many excellent cameras out there, learn how to use them, learn how to light a scene, learn how to edit and your audience won’t give a damn what gear you’re using. In 1991 I invested in a $75,000 Sony betacam camera that took worse video than my iPhone does now. Learn your gear. Learn your craft. Thanks for the vid.
Absolutely, the final results are absolutely defined by the user. Nice gear might make it look pretty and give you more options, but ultimately if you’ve honed your skills on basic equipment then and only then are you worthy of the big toys
Totally agree - The Panasonic G85 has fantastic for AF - Amazing Af options - AF works fantastic in both 4K and 1080p - get to know your camera - most TH-camrs never get their cameras out of Automode and then blame the camera - the G85 has sharper 1080 and 4K than the dull M50
Never had problems with auto focus with the right settings and light in the scene. G85 is amazing.. I have the g7 as well.. Next camera is GH5 with 12-35ii unless they update before then
That is a great lesson. Hone your skills on basic equipment. The National Film Board of Canada was famous for its documentaries. It was initially headed up by a Brit, John Grierson, back in the 30's, who often famously wore a beret. Legend has it that he got angry at his students who all started wearing berets. He told them, "First you become good filmmakers, build your reputation, then you can wear berets." Don't know if that's true but it fits.
I have the G7 love it, added GH5 to my bag.. Now I pick up the GH5, but find myself with the G7 when I am on run. The weight of the GH5 is more than I thought. I was on a boat with the GH5 and older 45-200 the images are stable but the whole camera and boat were moving. LOL
If you only care about "YouTubing' in 1080p. Then Canon M50 all day. But if you actually want to vlog or youtube in 4k. Then the Panasonic wins mainly because of the less restrictive crop factor and the much better IBIS. The M50 is all fun and games until you want to buy another lens aside from the kit lens that comes with it though..
Aah you see that is where I respectfully disagree. As I say in the film, the ibis (for me) makes the camera feel far too unresponsive. However, both cameras are terrible at focusing in 4K, which forces you to drop down to 1080, where the canon wins as the Panasonic still can’t focus for vlogging. Regarding lenses though, unless you want to buy the canon adaptor for mounting canon EF lenses on the M50, I do agree that the native lens choice for the Panasonic is considerably greater with there being lots of great M4/3 options out there. I personally stick to primes on the M50. It’s all good fun though and Cheers for your comments and thoughts!! Maybe we can get a friendly discussion going with some users of both cameras!!
Neil Smaller Films I would assume that you don’t value IBIS because you’re more of a film maker than a vlogger. It’s the main reason why the GH5S didn’t didn’t include IBIS because it was aimed at serious film makers. But the general census on TH-cam is that if you are a “vlogger” and like to film your lifestyle. Then IBIS really does come in handy and every major camera reviewer says the same. But again I can see why it wouldn’t matter to you personally. It also helps when photos as well but that’s another subject. Affordable 4k was the entire reason I brought the G85. If I only cared about 1080p then I probably would have brought an M6 which also has IBIS.
Aah yes absolutely, I can completely see why a Vlogger would value IBIS more than myself. I use 120/ 60 FPS to smooth out any instability, which is absolutely not an option when vlogging. My main issue is the autofocus on the G80 though. If Panasonic stepped up their autofocus game, the G80 successor will be an absolutely formidable camera.
For the GH5, GH5S and the G9: Panasonic released a firmware update which should fix the autofocus problem. A lot youtuber made comparisons and indeed it seems quiet useable now. For the G80: See my comment above.
Bear in mind that there is a BIG difference between the G80 and G85. The G85 is capable of continuous recording, whereas the G80 (as well as the Canon M50) will only record 30 minutes at a time. This was a major reason why I replaced my M50 with a G85. Additionally, the G85 is capable of 4K/30FPS (M50 is limited to 4K/24FPS) and its video quality is superior to the M50.
lol! He calls the M50's excessive 4K crop a "positive" because it means he can get different focal lengths from the same lens And then he tries to render the IBIS as sometimes a "negative" for the G85?? Biased much??
If a banana had a bunch of video features would it make it better than a Canon too? All that matters is the image ...and as much as Panasonic shooters can cry into their in body anamorphic desqueeze features all day... image to image canon always comes out on top ... I mean unless the image isn’t something that actually matters in video?
@@flyguy8787 The image out of Panasonic cameras is waaay better. Sharper, better DR, better low light, etc. Yeah sure the Canon might have a bit better color but because Panasonic has good codecs and better bitrates we have much more room to tweak the image in post

Been debating a6500 vs g85 for an upgrade for my channel. So stumbled on yours. Now I have to consider the m50 as well. Thanks for the review, very well made.
I bought G8/G80 from G7 and I'm really happy with it. From G7 its so good. I use it taking my kid autofocus is great and very stable. I was thinking on buying M50 but does not have autofocus in 4K made me not to buy it. I like taking everything in 4K hand held glad I bought G8/G80/G85 its awesome camera
I don't agree. For me the G80/81/85 is the better choice. It has a much better lens selection, more and better 4k-functions, it is weather proof and has a better image stabilisation. Especially in photography. The lens selection for Eos-M is a joke.
Correct, the EOS-M has no native lenses, the IS in the lenses that do have it, is no where as good as the G85, weather sealing is a huge deal if your out vlogging, and the quality test is suspect, Panasonic has better 1080p than any other camera. Every major camera review site that has a comparison, the Panasonic 1080p is considerably better. I have a feeling he was using the 22mm prime on the m50, which is the sharpest lens that platform has and was probably stopped down also, vs the g85 kit lens wide open.
Wtf the canon ef-M adapter is 100 bucks, than you can add ALL canon lenses ever made on the M mount and the AF works perfect with it! that shits on the Panasonic lens lineup 10 times.
MikedieONE you can get an adapter and do the same thing with m43 cameras also, but the adapter adds bulk and weight and DSLR lenses are longer because they require clearance for a mirror assembly. Mounting say the 35 f2 IS, which is one of Canons best consumer primes to an M50, the lens and adapter would be heavier and larger than the camera, and that’s just a 35mm. Compared to the Panasonic 20 1.7 it is night an day.
James Ryan don't forget to add the crop factor, 2.0 x1.6 is better than 1.7 x 2, also as the other guy said, there's an adapter, a 40 dollar adapter from Andoer, even the Meikke works well, canon glass is much much cheaper, and if you try to mount other lenses to Panasonic's mount, thr adapter with electronics is at least 200$, and still, the AF with those lenses isn't as great as the STM lenses mounted on the adapter of a camera with dual pixel autofocus.
Marco Hoffmann not a real argument, a 40$ adapter with electronics opens the gate to the M50 to mount a very wide selection of really good and sometimes cheap lenses, with AF and stabilization, and simpler lenses, the EF and EF-S line have plenty of great lenses, the 50mm 1.8 STM is sharp af, there are lenses like the 17-50mm f/2.8 with constant aperture for 300$, also amazingly sharp, and dual pixel friendly. I know Panasonic has grown its lens line, but every (fast ish) lens is much more expensive, and at the end, if you want to have a fast prime, a fast wide angle zoom, and a semi telephoto lens, it's going to be pricy as hell. The 50mm 1.8, the 17-50mm f 2.8 constant aperture and the 22-250mm STM are very very sharp and they all can be bought, with 1 adapter foe the 3, for 600$. Pardon my ignorance if I'm wrong, but i think the glass matters more than the body when it comes to getting sharp, usable shots. By the way, i don't own any camera right now, I'm still doing my research because i will spend about 1100$ in a camera + 2 or 3 lenses. I just searched for MFT panasonic lenses, they all are somewhat affordable, but not very fast, and with the 2x crop... I'm not sure i would be getting something as good as on Canon's side, sadly, also I'm interested in astrophotography, part of the reason why i consider low light capabilities and futureproofing the gear as important aspects.
This video alone was enough for me to click that subscribe button. I not only watched the video but enjoyed it a lot. Loved that script, selection of words and humor so so much .. keep making videos like this bro. Thanks
Finally somebody who gave this camera a decent review without bitching and moaning about the 4K crop/focus. And yes, you kinda sound like Jeremy Clarkson 😁
Hi, thanks for the support, I agree the 4K is a downside, but overall this camera is a game changer and a very good one at that!! Also, honestly appreciate the Clarkson reference!!
Sounds heavily biased. The G80 is better in every way, execpt the AF. weather sealing, IBIS, better video codec, peaking, zebras, Cine-D, etc. If you want to get the best result straight out of the camera, the m50 is better because of the colour perhaps, but the G80 is much better if you put some work to it in post. Also, less crop in 4K makes the G80 better. You just bought a Canon m6 with useless 4k.
Well, a badly focused super crisp 4K video is still worse than a well focused good quality 1080p in my opinion. And no amount of other specs, Cine-D, IBIS or whatever else will change that. When the AF starts to hunt that video is ruined.
that's why both are not good cameras... Anyway, the M50 is brand new, andit is still crap... M lenses are crap... Canon is holding back technology, and it will contunue to do so, because some people prefer wrost, and more expensive, just because it has the Canon logo written...
Andrei Todoran If you're serious about video you should be using manual focus anyway. And if you say it's the AF that makes the camera good, you just agreed that the 4K on the m50 is useless.
nobody... everyone has a inflated Cameraman at our disposal to do the focusing in our youtube videos for us... Why on earth there are cameras out there that offer excellent AF, and other Auto features?!?!?? This is so retro...Jesus!!! We are proper filmakers, we can afford to hire people for every task we need. We can afford Hollywood luxerys, we can affod to pay electrician, people to do sound for us, lighting, etc... LOL :)
I love the IBIS on my G85, I only use it when I'm going handheld though and that goes for any sort of stabilization respectively. The color does leave a lot to be desired but I can get a great look once I touch it up in Resolve which I would naturally do with any camera. I use the camera for paid work and films, not vlogging where I may want to just use the cooked in color to expedite the process for a rapid turnaround.
Great video. You are very entertaining for a camera comparison I felt like I was watching top gear for cameras. You helped us narrow down our camera choices. We are buying the Panasonic:) I know opposite to what you picked lol but perfect for us.
Yeaaaaaaaah but you need to mention the fact that the ef-m mount is basically a dead mount and that megapixel count is pretty much useless these days… I remember being so happy when 10 megapixel became a reality 🤣🤣
You had me worried for a moment that I bought a camera that doesn't focus in 4K! - Canon M50. So I just tried it, maybe there was an OTA update? Because the auto focus works just fine in 4K. No over-focusing and under-focusing, it just worked perfectly. In low light it was a little slow (~2 seconds) but in bright light it was quicker. Not sure why your M50 doesn't auto focus. Did you turn it on? 😂
Cheers man!! It’s all down to personal preference at the end of the day and what works best for your shooting style. But if I can make the comparison a bit of fun, it lightens the topic up a bit!!
If the G85 had better AF, I think they could have owned the market for 4K mirrorless under 1K. Everything else about that camera is awesome. Your only real viable option for 4K recording under 1K if auto focus is important to you is the Sony a6300. I really think Sony's AF is the only thing saving that camera and people deal with it's over heating, terrible battery life and expensive lense selection just so they can have good AF. Not even sure why they put 4K in the M50. No one interested in shooting 4K video is going to look at that camera with all of it's 4K shortcomings.
Making a Camera Pan with image stabilazation on... Never heared someone would try this. My advice and from probably every expertbon this planet. As soon you put a camera on a tripot. IS goes off. Tht the IS works against the panning should ve clear
Don't use 24p when Panning use a faster shutter speed problem solved - 24p is for celluloid when cameras had mechanical shutters - the standard is now 50p or 60p
@@xMychal it is not about 24 fps specifically, 25 fps or even 30 is the same it is about working with depth of field, motion blur, lights (even in direct sunlight!) etc. somewhere above 30 fps, clearly under 48 (The Hobbit) motion blur is less noticeable and soap opera effect begins
Man you had me on a rollercoaster, just ditched my g85 for the m50 and the beginning of you hyping the g85 made me miss it, until the final verdict came in and I realized.. i made the right choice. Great video!
Nice work with the comparison. I was really disappointed with the M50 when it was released. Canon really missed an oppertunity to capture the vlogging market. They could had it all with the M50 if they hadn't crippled the 4K. Anyway, found you because I was looking for G80 reviews (which I think I'll get - £499 after cashback at the moment). Nicely written video so subscribing so keep making videos. 👍
Neil Smaller Films ive own m100 and sl2, im going to sell sl2 because adaptability to vintage lens and c mount lens, at the same time portability of m100 is the best, for still almost the same, video sl2 will be a bit better, the question is can u carry sl2 everywhere in ur bag?no.m100 is the best as a secondary camera equit it with rokinon 12 mm and ur primary apsc use 30mm lens will be a good broll set up for night videos and bring along 50mm of tht vintage lens, but honestly avoid dslr at this moment due to adaptability, m50 is going to get lots of professional attention and hopefully metabones will sell speedobooster so tht we can get nearly ff on m50
I bought the m50, I love it for both video and photos, I installed cinestyle and I had to get the cage from smallrig, it really helps to provide an additional grip
I considered the Canon M50 but decided against it due to the lack of weather sealing. I travel a lot to hot humid and rainy environments and had cameras not survive the trip. There are just so much electronics packed into modern cameras and moisture is a big issue. I don't shoot in the rain but after a few days in the tropics everything seems to get damp. I also like desert environments where dust is a big problem.
I have both and they are great in different ways. I use the g85 for youtube and serious projects where I need something reliable. AF speed doesn't matter too much since I do a lot of talking-head shots or behind the camera manually pulling focus. Panasonic image looks much more detailed and actuate compared to the dreamy/glow look of Canon. I bought the m50 as a daily camera for vlogging, vacations, family, etc...Dual pixel AF is great for this purpose, and love the dreamy blurry look for home photos. The m50 is much smaller and more manageable for this purpose too. I got it for 600 bux!
Great video! I come across your channel looking for advice to buy my first camera, I want to level up the quality on my channel (Spanish content) and i think the canon M50 simply have all i need at this stage. The great thing about your video is that you took me to the "old" good days of Top Gear! and you remind me of Jeremys tests hahahah Keep the good work!
Liked the comparison, especially the almost blunt-like view on both! With regards to the IBIS seeming sluggish/soft/spongy... Out of sheer curiosity, which IBIS mode did you have it in, normal, or panning?
You are a very good presenter with your voice. When you said "beating", I was waiting for punching, dramatizing it like in a boxing ring competition between M50 vs G80.
“...or the G85 if you live on the wrong side of the pond” Considering that the G85 could record continuously on one file instead of breaking the footage into 4GB chunks like the G80, I’d like to think that Inlived on the *right* side of the pond
Canon M50 and every canon camera after 2015 that is and was under $5,000 (original price*) were trash pretty much in terms of price and features. At some point a 10% difference in colors and 4% difference in reliability is not worth a 27% overcharge. I could buy a lens with that money. I love canon but am tired of canon people bashing Sony cameras. Sony cameras can get good color (and I'm not talking about the idiots who say that and the colors actually look horrible). I love both brands, but canon is not going to be in my line up until they get it right with price for value and everything else.
This review is so pro. Reminds me of top gear but with less cynicism lol especially when you intro the M50 at 2:00 and then go yessss ladies and gentleman lol must be a brit thing.
Is it just me or someone else sees this videos relevance with the way top gear presents cars?
ahh good, someone else sees it too lmao
Exactly what I thought!

LOL :)
Loved this review you hit all the points but yet was funny as hell. Your personality is great
I love the IBIS on my G85, I only use it when I'm going handheld though and that goes for any sort of stabilization respectively. The color does leave a lot to be desired but I can get a great look once I touch it up in Resolve which I would naturally do with any camera. I use the camera for paid work and films, not vlogging where I may want to just use the cooked in color to expedite the process for a rapid turnaround.
interesting - love the colour of the G85
I don t know if m50 is really better than g80 but your video is great ! Nice battle between these 2 cameras ! Good job!
It's an extremely bias, try hard video, I'm not sure what's to like
Awesome video camera comparison and amazing explanation. Thanks a lot Neil.
I use the g80 / 85 and it’s a good gear for my opinion. When you turn the e stabilizer off it’s better only the normal ibis on
My brother. That was very entertaining!!!
Great video. You are very entertaining for a camera comparison I felt like I was watching top gear for cameras. You helped us narrow down our camera choices. We are buying the Panasonic:) I know opposite to what you picked lol but perfect for us.
Your voice overs are awesome, bro. If you're not a professional you should think about it.
Thanks bro, appreciate the feedback!!
A hint of inspiration from the great Jeremy Clarkson I think.... Well done :)
This video is amazing!!! Bro you have earned another subscribe :)
i loved this because you gave us a definitive statement you didnt say oh well it all boils down to which is right for you
Man, that is a great comparsion video! Helped me a lot. Thank you.
What a fantastic comparison video. Great job, Sir. :)
Yeaaaaaaaah but you need to mention the fact that the ef-m mount is basically a dead mount and that megapixel count is pretty much useless these days… I remember being so happy when 10 megapixel became a reality 🤣🤣
Such an amazing video!
Top Gear style. Good job man..
I really love your voice and script!!!
The story telling is very good. Love it. Gonna sub
Thanks for the support bro!!
I love your voice! Keep it up man. And yes canon M50 is the best budget filming camera!
Thanks mate, appreciate the support!!
Thanks for this review! Really like how you explained everything!!
I’m a proud owner of a g80, but I really digged this video. Super fun style. The narration was fantastic! I’m subbing for more great script-writing. 😊
The humor and sarcasm alone are worth subscribing! XD
Great video man! Very cool...
Thank you so much!!! The m 50 is my choice the video color quality is great! I love your beard btw lol
Super review! Like.
Sam S oh yeah i read this somewhere last night on TH-cam comments of another video!
@@BarryMaskell 24p still gives a cinematic look I believe. Most people film in 24p to achieve that look, then use 60p or higher for slow motion
xMychal 50p is becoming the new 24p
@@xMychal it is not about 24 fps specifically, 25 fps or even 30 is the same
it is about working with depth of field, motion blur, lights (even in direct sunlight!) etc.
somewhere above 30 fps, clearly under 48 (The Hobbit) motion blur is less noticeable and soap opera effect begins
you smashed it! Enjoyed every second of your video!
I love the drama of this video lol good work 😎
Dude you’re great ! Enjoyed your video , Made me laugh which don’t happen very much
Loved your review, thanks
Man you had me on a rollercoaster, just ditched my g85 for the m50 and the beginning of you hyping the g85 made me miss it, until the final verdict came in and I realized.. i made the right choice. Great video!
Beginning of the video*
Thanks for the support bro, you definitely made the right choice in my opinion. Enjoy the camera!!
And the M50 is better? I can't decide which one to buy :(
Ronnie Dizon so what's your verdict? You've used both cameras. If you had to do it all over again what camera would you buy the g85 or the m50?
I just did a review that said about the same, good job. You obviously love analogies.
Top gear for cameras?
Nice work with the comparison. I was really disappointed with the M50 when it was released. Canon really missed an oppertunity to capture the vlogging market. They could had it all with the M50 if they hadn't crippled the 4K. Anyway, found you because I was looking for G80 reviews (which I think I'll get - £499 after cashback at the moment). Nicely written video so subscribing so keep making videos. 👍
Great, well-made presentation! Liked and subbed.
Thanks for the positive feedback!!
Love your wit and cutting sarcasm - oh and the review mate!
I love how much figurative language he uses.
Thanks, Neil. Very amusing.
I thought I was watching topgear. Haha.. Keep it up man!
i see that you have a soundcard. Can you connect your soundcard via audio in to your G85?
This is a nice vid. How do you have 2.5K subs only? Ridiculous! +
What do u think , what to choose: Canon M50 or Canon SL2 ?
Hi, I haven’t personally tested the SL2, but I’ll try and get my hands on it soon!!
Awesome comparison!
I bought the m50, I love it for both video and photos, I installed cinestyle and I had to get the cage from smallrig, it really helps to provide an additional grip
Love the video and great dry humour
cheers
Really love ur videos man.
U should have a 100k or even half a million subs at the end of this yr man.
I have both Panasonic G80 and Canon 80D. Vlogging with the 80D and loving the sigma 16mm 1.4 on the panasonic g80.
Is it okay if I buy both?
g85 better if you have both
I considered the Canon M50 but decided against it due to the lack of weather sealing.
Thanks for having your head screwed on right and giving a BALANCED review of the very versatile Canon M50 !
Great video bud keep up the good work!
I feel like watching Jeremy Clarkson's The Grand Tour car's reviews. Really like bro!
Just ordered my G85. I personally think it’s better for filmmaking and the M50 is better for vlogging/content creation
Great video you made my choice extremely easy.
great review man.. thumbs up
10/10 comparison. Very well done video
Yes, i sold my Canon 200D II to get Lumix G85, no regret
i have both, but to shoot video long time g85 better than g80, for grading g85 👍👍👍.
M50 is good but versus g85 in my opinion g85 better than m50
very good narrative style. much like storytelling rather than review/comparison.
cool my bro youre so talented. its the most review i know. keep it up. im buying the m 50
Dude, you have the perfect narration voice.
Best Jeremy Clarkson impersonator on the net. I can only imagine how much Top Gear he's watched to reach the level of 'Clarkson Master'.
Thank you Ginger Clarkson, this has been the best comparison video.... in the world.
Liked the comparison, especially the almost blunt-like view on both! With regards to the IBIS seeming sluggish/soft/spongy... Out of sheer curiosity, which IBIS mode did you have it in, normal, or panning?
GREAT content! Subscribed.
great comparison and as I'm on a boat rocking about on the ocean I guess the g85 is a winner
What camera did you use to create this video? It's absolutely superb!!
Who else taught this guy had over 1 mil subs and got startled when u saw his actual subscriber count
I love my G85. Great camera!
You are a very good presenter with your voice. When you said "beating", I was waiting for punching, dramatizing it like in a boxing ring competition between M50 vs G80.
“...or the G85 if you live on the wrong side of the pond”
Considering that the G85 could record continuously on one file instead of breaking the footage into 4GB chunks like the G80, I’d like to think that Inlived on the *right* side of the pond
Amazing vid bro! Watched 50 other vids before but your one explained it all 🙏 #goat
It's at a pretty good price rn, $629 for the body.
Nice video !
Awesome Jeremy Clarkson style review! Subscribed. 👌
I love your video☺
This review is so pro. Reminds me of top gear but with less cynicism lol especially when you intro the M50 at 2:00 and then go yessss ladies and gentleman lol must be a brit thing.
thanks for sharing your opinion
