    I just noticed your large clock after the first vice area sharpening - I love it! Thanks so much for taking the time to help others. I did not know how and was in the middle of getting the branches OFF MY ROOF!!! and I used my kitchen knife sharpener and did it totally wrong - wrong edge - ha ha. I will try again, but in the meantime, I purchased a 2nd blade, so I can sharpen the other while watching/listening to a movie! God Bless you.

    important to note: check if your blade is HF hardened or not. HF hardening only hardens the surface of the metal and usually only the teeth are hardened. So you cant just grind away forever even if you can reset the teeth.

    What a difference sharp tools make! I wish I had seen some of these tool maintenance methods back when I was doing tree work --but they didn't have You Tube then.

    Terrific - I just bought a folding pruning saw from Fanno specifically because they can be resharpened. Thanks for these notes on how to do it.

    this is so cool i have wanted a saw that can be sharped to go in my bug out bag. this fits the bill. if you had to guess how many time can you sharpen it before it would be time to replace it.

    Bishop's Arborist Supply in Whittier California was the last place I was able to purchase one. You can also try searching for a Nicholson file. They are a manufacturer.

    Name of File? Sounds like "Knife File". May also be a "Feather File". It looks like Silkey brand sells one and others on Amazon. Not all have the narrow angle. Since this is the key to the sharpening solution, would like to know possible names and maybe sources, even price ranges. Seeing some for $6 and $30.

    I always thought there was a ton of work involved, but this looks like it's well worth it for the time it takes. Will this technique work on the Japanese pruning saws like the Silky saws? I review a lot of these on my channel and it would be great if I could sharpen these. Also - where is a good source for a knife file (in Canada, that is...)?

    • @camgere
      @camgere 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice video. Silky sells a rather expensive file to sharpen the Hayauchi blades (Silky file). It is also called a feather file at a 1/3 the cost. Easy to find on Amazon.com. As we say in sportbikes, get the technique right first, then add speed. It really does only take a few seconds per tooth once you get in the rhythm. My Japanese made saw set to adjust the angle of the tooth was only $30.

    @FrostyTheBeerMan I get my saw from Bishop Co in Whittier, CA. If you aren't local to Los Angeles, they can ship to you. You can get their info from google maps.
    Ask for the fanno head with the tri-edged 13 inch blade with the hook.

    Where can I buy the file in the video? What size is the file?

    • @NiraTocco
      @NiraTocco 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If u can find this file in a hardware store, one source for it is www.americantreeservicesupply.com/index#!/Tree-Tools-and-Accessories/c/41572412 - phone 877-208-9548. Nowhere was I able to see a length in the file's description, but the product is called "ARS sharpening file". ARS is the brand/mfg'r. Before I ordered a $250 pole saw from them, I phoned with questions. I was told that my first order from this company, the shipping will be free (tho there's a glitch in their new website's cart), but I'm not certain that the shipping would be free for a $25 file. I've seen this file on ebay and amazon for $22.50 but they want 8 to 10 dollars to ship. There are 3 edges to file on these saws, the top of the tooth is the first (and only, in many cases) to file, and this video neglects to show it. Here is a very informative www.arborlab.com video that DOES show it - th-cam.com/video/uPRTDCwTL_E/w-d-xo.html. Their website sells Silky (brand) files and they say: "When Sharpening your saw, Silky Japan recommends that you only file the top edge for the first 2 times that you sharpen a blade.
      Do not attempt the side angles as this will dramatically alter the way it cuts. If you feel it needs it you can do the sides on the 3rd or 4th sharpen".

    Gary Knowlton . . . MAYBE knows some, but not all about sharpening pruning blades.
    IF . . . your blade is like the one he's sharpening, fine.
    IF NOT . . . shit outta luck.
    Another person who thinks he's some sort of expert, who needs to teach, who needs to make videos, who doesn't care about the truth or accuracy of the subject.
    Try your speed filing on a WoodZig design.

      Please try using the principles he taught and modify them for your certain saw.
