I found this even harder to deal with when I found out at the time bts went against the government and gave donations to the families of the students and was highly critized for it... Even back then they were doing the right thing and they weren't even famous yet

That's unfair really, I always thought they have something special, even if I'm not korean, from the first moement I've watched Not today(my first kpop MV) I was into them and it's really hard to watch again Spring day but I love the fact that BTS have done so much good things.I've seen them helping other people which is great, they're great people.

On the "Why didn't I catch that immediately?": Probably because you're not Korean and it just wasn't an issue that was on your radar, certainly not when it happened. We only have limited capacity for information, and truthfully, even though the Sewol Ferry tragedy is just horrific, as well as the administration and actions taken afterwards, it's just not something you hear about as an American.
Point is, don't feel dumb that you didn't catch that. I would have called BS if you claimed you did, lol.
Also, BTS have specifically commented several times that they won't reveal a "true" meaning behind any of their songs or MVs, because if someone pulls something meaningful, why spoil it? And I personally have always agreed with that philosophy when it comes to art. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."

I researched the tragedy after hearing this theory. It was the first time I ever cried reading an article. I'm American and I remember hearing about it when it happened, but all the information given was the number of people who lost their lives, and not the full story. Finding out about it now. I feel guilty for not knowing. I'm glad this video has come out so we can see the scope of how awful this was and I encourage others to read more about it. There is such an injustice about everything that went wrong in a span of a few hours which essentially wiped out an entire student body.

(I might've heard or read that statement at some point in my life but It's possible I just forgot)

Ah you did the thing! You are 1 of 3 You Tube reactors that I REALLY like! Thank you!!
    1. The SK government told the families in the beginning that EVERYONE was ok.
    2. The Students were told (by the Ferry crew) to stay aboard while it sank.
3.The are txt messages and voice recording of students saying goodbye to family. (they are some of the most tragic and heartbreaking things I have ever read.)
I watched this from the states while it was going on, and I'm still not okay. BTS and Red Velvet did the victims and families right with their songs. Do a quick Google and then rewatch this and Red Velvet....
Also: Spring Day is the BTS song that will not die! I don't think it's EVER fallen off the charts and when ARMY is bored or in their feels they move it up the charts!

I watched it all from the States as well, and I fought becoming sick. I was horrified. I'd been to South Korea once prior to this event, and everything was that much closer to me as a result. Unintentionally yet meaningfully, I was in South Korea a second time in 2016, right at a time of commemoration and protest regarding the ferry disaster. I'm so glad that we can help the victims remain in the minds of people around the world, thanks to BTS and their work.

It’s also important to note that PGH, the former president whose administration handled this mess covered for the owner of the ship line just cuz he had too much hands in the pie of their economy. This and not to mention that the assessment of the crew and their practices were not well assessed thus why capt and crew were really not equipped to operate. They cut costs on training and proper crew? Is what I heard and just hushed it up.

  • @Lindsay_Loo

I believe it means that even though they fought for justice and won it still doesn’t change the out come of what happened. Their friends are lost and won’t come back to life just because the guilty have been held responsible. In the end it’s just them trying to move on while never forgetting the friends they have lost.

There are a few theories about Spring Day. But this is, by far, the best of them.
BTS never said that this music and MV is oficialy related to the tragedy, but RM once said, on a live, that he was thinking about the Sewol a lot while writing the lyrics.
    Army just put things together...

I don't necessarily agree with every part of this theory but it's strong. A couple of things I read in other analyses:
The students were celebrating their MIDDLE SCHOOL graduation. They were told to stay in their cabins and like many children in their culture they obeyed blindly.
They were 97ers like Jungkook so he plays a large role in this mv.
The white canvas shoes are the same as what students wear inside the school, so that is the significance of them washing up on shore.
These analyses may not be completely accurate but you can Google it and find some interesting information from other theorists.

This is a theory, but there are so many connections, that it has to be correct.
There is still government censorship in music in Korea (it's better than it used to be). So the lyrics and MV had to be metaphorical. But the gen public knows what it is about. Song of the Year 2017, still in the top 100 on the charts after 2+ years(I think 137 weeks). The only info ever offered by BTS was RM talking about writing the song in a park on a spring day, and it was about missing someone.

Justice is small comfort when you've lost a loved one to violence or a senseless act. The relief/justice is short-term because regardless, your life has been forever changed and your future is one without your loved one in it. In the Sewol Ferry case, think about the hundreds of parents that lost their children. It's one thing to lose a parent, that's "natural order" at work, but for a parent to bury a child or children? I can't even imagine it. Will there truly ever be justice for these families?

  • @61crispy
    @61crispy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I was in Korea when there were a lot of protests from the families of the dead children against the government. It was heartbreaking to see these suffering parents who lost their children in such a horrible way.
This, while it was a theory, has been accepted as the true meaning of the song. It should not surprise anyone that BTS puts such a message to the world in such an incredibly moving way. Regardless of how often I hear this song, I still cry.

Aside from spring day you should really watch “Snowpiercer” and read “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas.”
Snowpiercer is such a great movie with a bitter sweet ending. The world becomes too uninhabitable to live in thus being stuck in a really long train as a source of survival. The train is run by one man and his followers like a corrupt government. The first class people get to live in front of the train, living lavishly with better food and more access to stuff. While the lower class people live at the tail/ the end of the train. The lower class barely get any food or close and the upper class gets them and they have to sacrifice a child that’s not “like them” (people with disabilities etc.) one day a man decides to revolt like it said in the video and him and his team has to go through each compartment of the train just to get to the front. It wasn’t that easy (I’m not gonna spoil it) but there was a lot of people that died and blood shed. Eventually they got to the front of the train to get justice, they discovered that there was life outside (from the snowflake) so even if “something” happened, they’ll be ok because there’s life outside of the train once again.
P.S- ITS A REALLY GOOD MOVIE AND YOU NEEEED TO WATCH IT

Sewol tragedy is always gonna make me cry. I keep trying to imagine what if im in the survivor place and i cant bear it. Losing one friend is already painful and its also permanently, and this is like losing ALL of your friends. And remembering that senior high school is that time where we always spend times with our friends more than studying, where me itself, prefer to stay with my friends more making memories rather than studying and thingking ill lose them hits me😭

Basically the train at 14:21 of this video represents the world. Even if they step off the train, run on the path toward justice together, and succeed, the world will still keep moving as it always did because the incident is permanent and they can’t bring those people back. All they can do is remember and not forget.

Some preface on the "Little Match Girl" is she was an orphan (as mentioned because her family died) and tried to sell matches for money in some cold, snowy place. (I believe if was somewhere in Europe but I could be wrong, it's been a bit since I've watched it) The matches are her only source of income really, and most people refuse her. At the end of a particularly viscous snowy day she lights a match for a little warmth, trying to conserve them in hopes of getting money the next day. However, as one goes out, she lights another. She sees her family and a large house with food and fire. This cycle repeats until it's a string on connected hopes and dreams or possibly memories. The final one is either her mother or maid, I'm unsure, leading her into the house. It then cuts away to her small body buried in snow and ends. It's been a while since I've read or seen it though so some things may be incorrect ^^" it's quite sad and almost made me cry but it was very well done. I believe Disney has a short of it as well though I may be wrong

I don't know if it has been brought up before, but I think the lyrics about 'stay there a little longer' or w/e is from the perspective of the people that had passed away, telling the survivors to stay alive, to live their lives, for just a bit longer. Then there are lines about 'I'll come to see you' I think? something like that, which could be them saying they'll meet again in the afterlife, so just hang on longer?
idk.... that is my thoughts on that part.

the government handled it poorly by not allowing the children to escape the ship. they told them to stay in their rooms as the government sat and did nothing to help. they had many opportunities to let the children go and have them sit on the side of the ship where it was tipped over, but they didn't. the coastguard and captain didn't do much of anything to help, either. they reached out to the government, and no agreement was made over what to do. the children drowned because no action was taken when there was every right to do so. it breaks my heart to know that so many lives could have been saved if people just used their common sense, instead of worrying about the ship, itself. out of 476 passengers and crew, 304 died in the disaster, most notably around 250 students. on 15 May 2014, the captain and three crew members were charged with murder, while the other eleven members of the crew were indicted for abandoning the ship. during the capsizing, some members of the crew drank beer. the crew also communicated by telephone with staff from chonghaejin at seven different times. as passengers stayed in their cabins as instructed, captain lee and his crew abandoned the ship. lee, cho, and the first and second mates were the first people to be rescued. the captain was rescued around 9:46 am. as the ship capsized, some passengers followed the announcements to stay put, even as the water came in. most of the student passengers obeyed the announcements. some passengers who climbed to the top of the ship or jumped into the water were rescued. videos recording passengers during the capsizing have been recovered.
    th-cam.com/video/r6VSoceCAXY/w-d-xo.html
    th-cam.com/video/MkyFbcnIQV4/w-d-xo.html
some recorded the announcements telling passengers to stay in place and put on life jackets, while some showed passengers joking around, putting on life jackets, and sending farewells. passengers made calls, sent text messages, or sent kakao mobile messages during the capsizing. the last message was sent at 10:17 am.

There's symbolism in the choreography as well. Jimin represents the victims, and in the bridge the bows make a 'bow' of a ship

I wont comment on spring day as you will get heaps of reactions to it anyhow. But I will say dont feel bad if you dont understand the message the first time. Understanding "NORMAL" videos are one thing but BTS videos are a different story, there are messages upon messages upon messages in them. You go down a deep dark rabbit hole with them and eventually lead up to the rest of us linking music videos together for big storylines and now awaiting for confirmation with the up in coming game and video coming in 2020. So I can confidentally tell you, you wont understand it all, there is hidden meanings but I will say if you get stuck BTS army will hold your hand through anything you want to understand thou. BTW its the background music in this explained that makes you want to cry. Its beautiful music.

The part where the train passes and jungkook looks at himself going by on the train, it’s like even if justice is achieved, the dead are still gone, hence the train passing by quickly and jungkook looking on at a train that will never come back. I hope that makes sense haha I tried to explain it more!

If subtitles don't scare you off there is a even more in depth one by ItalianArmy (she picks up on even more things and talk more about the accident too). The songs and the mv therories dont always connect so dont feel that the lyrics have to talk about the mvs content, and BTS mvs almost always have symbolism, popculture/culture references and hidden things.

I was in GwanJu (sp?) for a military exercise during the time of the accident. They shut down the base and flew the president in for the disaster, meanwhile as an American who had no easy access to the news at the time the Korean government shut down all media on the base (Korean base). We were told nothing was happening and were given the day off. When I went off base into town I finally saw everything on the news, but the base was still no media when I came back. I remember that outside media sources from other countries were digging deeper into what happened than what the Korean government was reporting.

You'll notice that whenever they're inside the train, the camera keeps tilting. This is to represent the ferry. While it was sinking, it gradually tilted. Also, the laundromat scene 10:31 where the view is from the inside of the washing machine, that's supposed to represent the students who were trying to break the windows in a very last ditch effort to escape when they saw help coming. However, they ultimately failed and were drowned.

13:38 the scene where jungkook is still on the train means that whatever choice he would have done, even if he wouldnt stand up to follow RM, even if he would keep sitting on the train, the ending wont change..what is done is done. He made the choice to stand up to achieve the justice but the dead wont come back to life.

  • @Mar_velouslyOT7

Think I read somewhere the washing machine also represents the sinking ship and the tumbling clothes inside are the victims who couldn't get out but drowned. Jin looking back from the round glass represents either rescuers looking into the unbreakable windows of the ship or victims looking out to rescuers, either way it shows sense of hopelessness...

The part where the train cuts them off and the other Jungkook is still on there (as the train carries on into darkness) represents the fact that the dead are still dead, even during your fight for justice, in the end the message is to not forget.. and in that you honour the victims.
