Great video. When I was in the Engineers we also carried a machete on the right between water bottle and basic pouch and (sometimes) the bayonet in the same spot on the left hip. In the MPs we never carried bayonets and the machetes were kept in the vehicle with the other pioneer tools. I was also in the Infantry in the Reserves and our SOP was two mags in left pouch, cleaning kit, rifle sling and (sometimes) a smoke grenade in the right with the third mag on the weapon. The toggle rope was also slung under the right pouch using those straps and press studs on the sides of the pouch. Same for engineers and MPs except no smoke and engineers often had the sling fitted so we could do things like prod minefields, build bridges etc. Never patrolled with a sling on in any unit. We also had the Compass/FAD pouch on the left strap and a field dressing taped on the right. I served 1977-1987. A quick tip, use a flat head screwdriver, your Knife,Pocket,Clasp or bayonet to lever those bloody clips open!

That webbing caused hip and waist ulcers on long marches from the metal buckles and clips. They were murder in summer as no one wore field jackets or jumpers, Howard Green. The clips and buckles weren’t noticeable if you wore the M65 field coat but no one did as Australia is predominantly mild/warm/hot. The ulcers could be so bad I met one bloke who was medically discharged because of them. I transferred a padded waist belt from a civilian rigid frame backpack and used it on my webbing set up. A few years later privately purchased padded belts were the norm and then they became standard issue in the mid 90’s. Also no one used the web loops to attach the water bottles to the pistol belt but used the metal clips.

Excellent video and thanks for taking the time to demonstrate setting it up! I'm amazed that Australia was using m56 until the 80s

The “ two mars bars and a can of coke “ pouch would be no good in Australia, melted chocolate and warm coke ! 🤮 ......🤣🤣🤣

Good demonstration John of how the webbing sits on the body. I remember army cadets in the 1980s, I seem to recall we were using ww2 type webbing, 37 pattern?, I just remember the canvas pouches and the water bottle with Cork stopper. Don't know if I've mentioned it before but I worked with a couple of Australian Vietnam veterans during my time in oz. Good video m8, cheers 🙂🙃🙂
