  • Here is the story of cannabis, aka marijuana. Today it is illegal in most places, but that likely is to soon change, especially after people watch this video.

    www.podomatic....
    Once upon a time there was a plant called cannabis. Since as far back as 10,000 years ago, it was one of the first crops grown when farming began. Hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant, had consistently been used in places like ancient China to create stuff like clothing and rope. Hemp was and still is non psychoactive, which means it doesn’t affect the mind or mental processes because its THC levels are so low. In other words, smoking it will not get you high.
    The first recorded use of the cannabis that does get you high was in approximately 2,737 BCE. Emperor Shen Neng of China used the plant as medicine for things like gout, malaria, and poor memory. You heard that right.
    Throughout the next 3,000 years, cannabis use for medicinal purposes slowly spread throughout Asia and into Europe. The Chinese mixed it into food. In ancient India, they mixed into a drink called bhang. (bang)
    In the second century CE, the Greek doctor Galen prescribed cannabis as medicine. Prior to that in Greece, cannabis seeds had been consumed recreationally.
    Soon after this, the Chinese doctor Hua Tuo (Hwa Toe) used cannabis to relieve pain for patients undergoing surgery. He would ground it and mix it with wine.
    During the Middle Ages, cannabis was pretty popular in the Middle East. Muslims there weren’t supposed to drink wine, but ain’t nobody said they couldn’t smoke grass! That’s what they actually called it. Well, they called it hashish. (Hasheesh) However, the Arabic doctor Ibn Wahshiyah (eebeen washeeuh) did warn about its potential dangers.
    Christopher Columbus brought rope made out of hemp on his first voyage to the New World in 1492. Both the French and the British had their colonists grow cannabis in the New World. During the 1600s, cannabis grew even more popular, and became a major thing to trade between South and Central Asia.
    In the 1700s, doctors everywhere recommended cannabis as medicine. The Irish doctor William O'Shaughnessy, in particular, helped popularize its medical use for pain treatment. However, in 1798, Napoleon learned that many of his soldiers had started smoking cannabis while in Egypt and had brought the habit back with them to France. In response, he outlawed the plant.
    Still, cannabis remained popular. In the 1800s, cannabis plantations were scattered around the United States. Doctors regularly prescribed it and it was easy to buy in general stores. By now, people traded for cannabis all around the world and its use dramatically increased.
    By the end of the 1800s, though, attitudes toward cannabis had started to change. A growing number of people were freaking out about drugs, as alcoholism and opium addiction were dramatically on the rise.

      I've been a regular cannabis user since I was 15 (half my life). The plant itself has helped me tremendously as a remedy for chronic and acute illness, a hobby, an aid for broadening my perspectives, a social tool and so on. It's really wonderful. Prohibition on the other hand has hurt myself and my family deeply. At various times I've been judged, harassed, had legal trouble and been pushed to the fringes of society due to the stigma and criminalization of this plant. birdsdaword What does cannabis do to these receptors?

    • @birdsdaword
      @birdsdaword 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Lee Flair Cannabinoids such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannabidiol) bind to the receptors. The receptor crosses the membrane seven times. THC causes a high and also a calming effect and also The munchies, a desire to eat. Those are only two of the main effects because some people also get upset and paranoid once they have ingested a cannabinoid. Cannabidiol is not known for making people high but has been used as a medicine all the same.
      The receptors are found in the bilipid membrane of the cell. Once the receptor has bound to the lipid bilayer there is a cascade of events starting with what’s called a G protein and there is a cascade of a The enzyme adenylyl cyclase and that acts on a variety of proteins.This is called a second messenger system. There are also cannabinoids in the gut. Ask me more questions maybe I can be more specific.

      P.M. Laberge street cars take special infrastructure and can not easily be maneuvered through suburban areas. Buses can share the road with automobiles and have extremely low purchase cost and up keep cost when compared to light rail.

    I (26 now) smoke weed almost everyday but there's a good chance, had it been legal, than I never would've tried it. So much of being a teenager is just doing whatever people tell you not to do. 100% the fact that it was illegal was a MASSIVE factor that got me to start smoking. For example I didnt and still don't drink, most likely because it's completely allowed and not taboo in the slightest which makes the whole experience seem boring to me in the first place.

    I hated DARE when i had it in 4th grade, it made absolutely no sense when it said things like alcohol and cigarette use was 100% bad and should never ever be done (anyone who was in DARE knows how they used lies and propaganda to try and scare people) when people like my grandma (whos my hero) used them and was a seemingly normal (favorite person on earth). So when they talked about drugs i really just shut them out. Luckily i had people in my family who i respected, who gave me an honest conversation about drugs and there dangers, including Marijuana. To this day ive never drank, smoked cigarettes, or done anything other than weed; and i honestly feel this is more from the honest conversation i had rather than the scare tactics. Its not hars to imagine i wasent the only one who saw through the BS but we can also assume I'm in the minority who was given such an honest conversation. If youre and adult, you should be able to do to your own body what you please, so long as it dosent harm others, and i think the greatest thing we can do with kids is be honest with them about things like drugs, give them the facts and say "when you're an adult you can do with your body what you choose"

He said something else about it but I don’t remember right now. Maybe it’s because I’m smoking some herb right now. But the marijuana that we buy now in the legal and illegal states have been modified so that the plant can grow all male herb, which does not get fertilized by the female seed that makes it weaker. If that makes any sense.

    Actually marijuana was first legalized in Alaska in 1972 when the Alaska Supreme Court ruled nine to zero that using marijuana in your home was protected by the right to privacy. It stayed that way. In 1980's when George Herbert Walker Bush tried to get the Alaska legislature to make it illegal. That required a constitutional amendment. None was passed. This is why we did a legalization initiative in 1999 to use the campaign as a way to educate Alaskans about their right to privacy including the use of marijuana and to then expand that legalization..

    Question -- how is marijuana legal in states like Washington and Colorado when the federal laws against selling it have never (yet) been overturned? Or is the Fed just like "meh, whatever."

    • @iammrbeat

      The Fed is just like "meh whatever." They just don't enforce the Controlled Substance Act.

      @Dugroz well the the states that voted for it has told the federal government that they will not waste the resources.

    • @quito0819
      @quito0819 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@iammrbeat It is a little more nuanced than that. Federal law enforcement (eg, DEA) concentrates its limited resources on drug trafficking organizations and illegal opiods. Getting into a pissing contest with states over clinics etc would be a waste of resources. Since Sessions is no longer the AG, I doubt that this will be a priority. However, bring in less than an ounce of marijuana through US customs and, if caught by CBP agents, one is facing up to one year of incarceration and a $1000 fine. So yes, the Controlled Substance Act is being enforced.

    Mr Beat I'm a big fan. I'd like to suggest an episode on Yellow Thunder Camp that began in 1981. It was a hostile takeover of Federal land in Victoria Canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The was named in-honor of Raymond Yellow Thunder, who died under mysterious circumstances in Gordon NE. There was also the burning of the Custer County courthouse in 1973 by militant AIM supporters, and activist and later movie actor Russell Means was involved.

    I'm pretty sure it's incorrect to say that "cannabis seeds had been consumed recreationally" in Ancient Greece, or anywhere for that matter, because I don't think cannabis seeds have any "recreational" value, being that - like hemp - they don't have enough of a concentration of Of psychoactive cannabinoids like THC to induce a cannabis intoxication

    • @thirdgen377
      @thirdgen377 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Seeds were definitely consumed in ancient times. It wasn't for the "intoxicating effects", it was as a food source

      Yeah, Dylan's got the wrong perspective on the particular point, in part because the word 'recreationally' was used so vaguely. Different seeds have different oils, nutrient and proteins, and that's nutritional fact.
      That said, I'm pretty sure it's been smoked in places since it was discovered.

    I met the president of Norml in Phoenix when I was 17. He came into the restaurant I worked at. Not really met, he walked by in a corridor and my coworker pointed him out. Nice video, I didn’t catch anything that was wrong. I heard about the family being axe murdered. The version I heard, in a book called Marijuana Reconsidered said the guy was psychotic and the family doctor told the family he should be institutionalized. The family didn’t do it, and then 6 months before he did it, he smoked 1 joint, that was supposedly all he ever did. The book said that was the linchpin evidence in the congressional hearings.
