  • Climate change has risen the sea levels around several Panamanian islands where more than 1,000 residents of the nation's Guna Yala tribe live. Now, those residents have to relocate in order to survive. Manuel Bojorquez reports.

    My question is,
    Could the Panama government not invest more money in the tribes new location, so it could more resemble their traditional Island?
    The video showed unfinished lots, but the whole outlay look very suburban an unattractive. It seems to me the planning of the community could have been much better?

    The climate has nothing to do with this. There are 2 official NOAA tide gauge sites in Panama and both indicate 1.4 mm/year in sea level rise. The island is sinking.
    The sea level is rising in Acapulco, Mexico at 7.4 mm/year. Why no story about Acapulco?

    • @Collgab2050
      @Collgab2050 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rising sea level is not just the ocean getting higher. Erosion is still at work, higher sea, the more erosion works its way higher and more into the land. You need constant maintenance of artificially raised or created islands, which they do in Dubai, and it costs A LOT of money. Money that these communities do not have.

    Interesting if skewed reporting, sadly. The sea level will continue to rise. It has risen over 25 meters in the last 500 years. Around 6 inches in the last 50-100 years. AS it continues to inch up, there will be coastal impact and is predictable. This is nothing new and has been known for a long while. I down-voted this segment because of the deliberate skewed reporting by CBS. Humans may have added to this, measured in inches, but not to the draconian level the article alludes.

      This is a really mild message on climate change. You implying that it is slanted is nothing short of insane. It is like saying that you don't think it's raining when it's raining and insisting that you have the right to say it isn't raining if you want to and that if people contradict you on this that they are biased.
      Less than 30 years? I would guess a whole lot sooner than that.

    • @jmhtexas8119
      @jmhtexas8119 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Atlantic and Pacific Oceans are not rising at the same rate, but they are rising. Your conclusion is illogical. Are you a global warming denier? The San Blas Islands have been there for thousands of years. There is nothing in the geology to cause them to sink and erosion occurs when water covers areas that were previously dry.

    • @Collgab2050
      @Collgab2050 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water does not rise the same everywhere. There are many factors at work, like ocean currents and geography which impact how much the ocean rises in different areas. These islands are located in an area of the Caribbean which has very strong ocean currents and winds that push water towards the land. On average the ocean level rises 1 inch everywhere else, but here the water is forced slightly higher so it could be 2 inches (these are just example numbers). Your example does not factor in all these nuances.

    • @Collgab2050
      @Collgab2050 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      These native people have lived this way on these islands for hundreds if not thousands of years. The changes in sea level have been increasing quickly over just the past hundred or so. The ones who didn't think ahead were the people in the industrialized world who polluted without thinking of the consequences (really not knowing them for a long time).
