  • The young Lieutenant Jack Kennedy writes a series of letters to the mother of a sailor killed on his navy vessel, PT-109. Her heirs learn they contain never-revealed details of PT-109’s deadly encounter with a Japanese destroyer.

I see this and hear recorded first hand accounts of Skipper Kennedy and the tragic events of the 109 and then hear people who for what disgraceful purpose belittle his military service and I'm appalled. The men he served with on that boat regarded him as one of them as well as an in the moment leader. I salute John Kennedy as not only a gifted leader but also the war hero he truely was.

What about the conclusion????? My brother was in the Navy in DC and got to meet President Kennedy several times. He was a very personable man and would remember conversations with my brother. He would spend as much time as he could with the Navy Honor Guards just talking like regular people.

One of the finest Presidents the US ever had. He was afraid of nothing.

JFK had that Irish fatalism. He had his personal faults, but he did his duty when he could have avoided military service. So did Richard Nixon BTW. Different (better) times.

I remember where I was when Kennedy was shot.He really was an incredible man. I am sickened by his detractors. Everyone who met him loved him. We will never ever have a President like that: one who served God, family, friends and nation. Presidents since Bush are self-serving, narcisstic, two-faced liars and power hungry. . .

Kennedy never took a salary as president. It was all donated to charity.

Joe purportedly volunteered for his dangerous mission in part due to jealousy over Jack’s notoriety as a result of th PT 109 heroics. I think it was a piece in The New Yorker that had given fame to the incident so Jack was now well known.

"You don't just get in to see Jack Kennedy" ? Why not, he was just another Naval boat Captain., Not the latter famous JFK.

The only reason I could think of was that his father had been ambassador to the UK and was prominent in politics.

My grandfather was a set carpenter for Warner studios in Burbank before the war. He left for New Orleans in 1942 to build these boats. They were all wood hulls and such. I wonder if he helped build the pt 109 boat?
