Our first cruise was QM2 in 2004. Now lost count of how many Cunard cruises since then, and we see no good reason to risk another line. We adore the Cunard experience and the dress code is a very vital part of our holiday. Walking across Brooklyn through Coffey Park and seeing the Queen emerge from the Hudson mist is a great feeling - time to go home in style.

It doesn't get more traditional than Cunard if that is what you're looking for. I will say that the non-traditional cruise lines are not as interchangeable as it might seem at first. CCL uses standard sized ships so the "party boat" atmosphere is largely the result of demographics rather than the ship itself. RCL tries to dazzle you with the latest technology (robotic bartenders, hydroponic gardens) and has a theme park vibe. NCL goes for more of a hip Vegas nightclub sort of feel.

I, and I suspect many other "classic" cruisers, have just about had it with all the "country club elegance" now foisted on us by cruise lines trying to be everything to everybody. I like the fact that Cunard is adamant in their dress code, I will defend on the last true teak deck the wearing of a tuxedo and the parade of the baked Alaskas until they pry the cherries jubilee from my cold dead hands. James Bond never cruised on Carnival!

I think you present a false alternative. It’s not ‘Cunard vs. Carnival.’ Cunard represents a niche in the market and within their niche they have very high end to very affordable options based on your ‘cabin class’ choice. The unifying aspect is the formality. Those inside the British class system can use their money to jump into a different class for the cruise length; those outside the British class system can ‘play act being upper class’ if they want. A more worthy alternative comparison would be Cunard vs. Seabourn. The formality of Cunard vs. the smart casual (sport coat without tie on non-formal nights, suit on formal nights, on Seabourn). Seabourn’s food quality is equivalent to the Queen’s Grill mixed with the Princess Grille.

But nobody, I mean nobody, shows up in the Queens Grill wearing the "casual Chic" collared shirt and slacks, as is common now on most cruise lines. Celebrity, of all people, are allowing fashion JEANS in the dining room at dinner. We Yanks have been dumbing down for the past decade. Want proof? Fly economy on Delta from Atlanta to Dallas sometime. Again, good comment.

I live in Florida, land of the perpetual slob and t-shirts for all occasions. Vacation should be a break from that kind of monotony, thus...Cunard. I had my reservations about cruising in general, large crowds, long queues, feeling slightly trapped but liked the idea of different destinations from one hotel room . I gave it a go and booked a cruise on queen Victoria, I'd read Cunard 's reputation for formal dress code and had to buy a tux as dressing up is not something that I normally do. A little apprehensive I took the cruise back in 2017. I shouldn't have worried I loved the whole experience, in fact it is the best trip I've ever taken. No queues, No large crowds, relaxed and easy atmosphere. Excellent service and food, beautiful classical music around the ship. The main entertainment shows were a little average but overall the traditional feel of the whole experience were my tastes to a tea. I can see if you want a casual, family friendly, surfing, water sliding ,party heavy resort type ship Cunard would not be for you but I fear I have hit the bulls eye on my first try and like Gary's partner reluctant to go elsewhere now. I even found i loved the dressing up !!! who knew . Did another trip the following year just as good, can't wait to rebook my cancelled 2020 cruise.

It's not my thing but after thinking about it, I realized there aren't too many places left for those who enjoy formal dress. Dinner at an expensive restaurant, and the Opera or ballet, but those are just one night experiences.
I remember when people would change their clothes four or five times a day for different activities, but that seems mostly gone, at least here in the US, so I can see how many who like that sort of thing are grateful that Cunard is holding the line

I go on one crossing a year (December 15-22) except last year due to covid. I enjoy a traditional ocean crossing. Good observation on the shows. I usually don't go to them but i enjoy the lectures in the morning. The best part is the fellow passengers. Many go on the same crossing every year and it's great to see old friends.

I have a lot of NCL journeys under my belt, loads of Caribbean journeys, multiple repositioning cruises, Alaska and eastern Canada. They were my first cruise line and I’ve always felt comfortable on board. I did have one QM2 crossing under my belt, it was a bucket list thing and I enjoyed it very much, but then I went back to my Platinum Plus status with NCL the following year. When I met the woman who became my wife, well she is a “seasoned traveler “. However, while she has been literally EVERYWHERE, (she works for an airline and travels for a living), she had not been on a cruise since her childhood. Naturally, I brought her with me on a number of NCL cruises and she had a great time. However, I knew how much she enjoyed dressing up for dinner, and generally a classier journey, even though we’d been in the Haven on multiple occasions. I told her that I thought she would love Cunard and promised we’d try it. Our honeymoon consisted of a month either at sea or by it. First we did a repositioning cruise for 15 days on the NCL Epic, from Florida to Barcelona. It was our honeymoon and naturally it was magical. Then we flew from Barcelona to London, and took a train down to Weymouth to spend a few days by the sea. Then another train ride to Southampton, to catch the QM2 back to NY. Our formal clothes had been unnecessary since our wedding day, but now when we entered our cabin on the Queen, the luggage was there waiting for us as I had shipped it ahead. Once my wife saw the QM2, she was converted, completely hooked. We’ve done a few since then, and had a few cancelled due to the pandemic, but we’re scheduled back on board again this Christmas, for 12 days in the Caribbean. There’s no place in the world we’d rather be, and no ship we’d rather be on either. We’ll be “home”. ❤️🙂

well U just convinced me that I must do a QM2 cruise. my hubbie & I have done about 10 cruises, mostly on NCL, 3 on Royal, NCL we have done the Haven x3, fell in LUV with the "relaxed" grand service. My hubbie is a shorts, tee & flip flops kinda guy & getting him to do a Cunard will be my challenge as he has never liked the 'formal nights' on neither RCC or NCL. But, I am hoping I can get him to LISTEN to this video & read some of your comments & change his mind to do at least 1 QM2. Thanks!

My husband and I have our first cruise booked on the QM2 for next May. We booked an Eastbound transatlantic crossing and I cannot wait! I also booked an Alaskan cruise for next June on the Queen Elizabeth. I’m taking my father on that to celebrate his 80th birthday. Much like your partner, the experience is what attracted me to
Cunard. Whenever we travel, the style and experience of the travel itself and the accommodations are as (if not more) important to me as where we are going. My husband generally couldn’t care less about that and is more about the destination. Thanks for all of the great information, Gary. When we did the Transatlantic on QM2 and ran into the tail end of Hurricane Jose, I was grateful we were on an ocean liner, not a cruise ship. It was very rocky with Force 12 winds. I can't imagine how it would have been with a cruise ship. We love the traditional way Cunard does things.

Born and raised in London, I’m tempted to try the British experience (probably the Princess Grill) but we’re put off by the mandatory formal thing and all-around strict dress-code. In contrast, we enjoyed the Crystal Serenity (Monte Carlo to Venice). 6-star service but casual and relaxed.

Thank you. As always, insightful and effective.
I recently completed a 74 day cruise on the Queen Victoria - San Francisco to Southampton. You described the ship experience perfectly. Most of the passengers I met were raving fans of the Cunard experience. They LOVE the formality. Many felt that the dining room was too relaxed about the dress code during lunch. The itinerary was less important than the opportunity to dance, drink and mingle with other passengers who share their views of the world.
Last fall I completed a 30 day cruise with Holland America. The contrast is sharp. I preferred the relaxed dress code, additional dining options and the significantly improved entertainment offerings.
As you often emphasize, it is about how we value the various tradeoffs. The itinerary is most important to me. Entertainment and food are more important than the dress code.
    Service was comparable - exceptional.
The internet was similar - overpriced and unreliable.
I am grateful that both are committed to the creation of a memorable experience. But, they are different experiences. They attract very different passengers. No regrets about the Cunard cruise. I will return to Holland America for the next cruise.

Cunard is the last cruise line left that is genuinely 'classy' in the old world sense; people that travel on them (as I do) want that genuine effect - they don't want screaming children, conga lines and Caribbean music, eating contests, water slides, or anything else. I want to smoke a fine cigar with a vintage scotch in peace and quiet, attend a lecture by an educated person, enjoy some afternoon tea, and appreciate a time when the journey itself mattered. Respectfully, as someone who has traveled on (I presume) the QM2 even more than I have, I would have thought you would recognize why Cunard is the way that it is.
