The A6M-3 (Type 32) was introduced to counter the increasing performance of Allied fighters after the Battle of Midway. It had an uprated engine and the wingtips were fixed but clipped to increase roll rate. Despite this it was not popular with its pilots as the reduced wingspan combined with the shorter wings lowered its high altitude performance and the uprated engine increased fuel consumption quite a bit. In fact it had the shortest range and shortest endurance of ANY mark of Zero. Mitsubishi listened to the complaints and made some changes to the next upgrade, adding wing fuel tanks to add fuel and restoring the folding wingtips. However the bad reputation of the Type 32 seemed to "stick" to the upgraded version, so Mitsubishi made a conscious decision relabel the A6M-3 'upgraded II' to the "Type 22", to associate it with the very successful A6M-2 Type 21. Oddly, this worked, and the Type 22 was very successful, having the longest range of any mark of Zero and being produced in twice or more the numbers of the Type 32. Most of these changes were continued in the next major modification of the Zero (late in1943), the A6M-5 (Type 52), and early M-5 airframes are almost externally identical to the Type 22 - in fact MANY Type 22 wrecks are misidentified as a Type 52 wreck - only the Manufacturer's Data Plate (With the manufacturer's serial number) differs externally.
