When I was a student in Munich I loved the Bavarian National Library (Bayerische Staatsbibliothek). You could read books from the 18th and even 17th century on all topics, like cannon gunnery or spices. A library is an important part of the Inheritance of a culture.
Germany has a fabulous library except the early 20th century for some reason
Elizabeth Drinker’s diary. She was a Quaker in Philadelphia.
I've learned that with video games as well. You buy them when they come out or within a year or so of their release. Then play them when you get around to it. If you wait too long they become out of production and people 500% increase the price of them due to the rarity of them. I decided to start collecting consul games to my consoles. If your parents try to force you to get rid of them in a spring cleaning or forced cleaning do not get rid of your video games as they will be worth something a few decades later. I really wish I did not get rid of any of my gameboy games.
As if I don't have enough books already, watching Jon talk about these books, now I have to add a few more to my library!
Recruiting a Masters of Library Science grad student from Indiana University looking for a cataloging capstone project sounds like a great, free way to have your library cataloged so you can share all of its contents with the world. ;) If I had had an opportunity like this when I was in grad school getting my MLIS, I would have thought I'd died and gone to heaven.
I remember seeing a Subscription Library in Cincinnati. It was basically for historians and legal specialists. Carnegie made public libraries available and while taxes support many of the libraries today, they aren't appreciated as much as they should be.
Sorry I missed this live! It was a pleasure to listen to this. Keep up the good work!
Also a couple of the Federalist Papers
I just found this live stream, I don't like that I missed it. This is a great topic. Real books have always been my best friends. I never got into reading on Kindle and the like.
Thank you Townsends for sharing.
Your library cannot be a proper one until you have Washington's Diaries.
I was watching "Rushmore" today and felt such an immense sense of Nostalgie when they flipped through the physical checkout cards. I went to a Carnegie museum in Pittsburgh, with my son, back in February and took a picture of him searching through the old card library catalog.
Are you familiar with the Foxfire books? Very rich with information of Appalachian culture. They detail on making everything they needed and the lifestyle.
Love those books. We camped at Smokemont almost every year for decades. I discovered the Foxfire books at the Cherokee Museum bookstore.
Nebraska has so may restrictions on alternative building.
I came across a book (Tolstoy's essays if I recall) of my grandmother's that had a stamp in the front indicating that it was from her lending library (charge of something like 1d a week) which considering she ran a haberdashery in Mitcham was probably just a couple of shelves.
Nathaniel's Nutmeg is the book not remembered... 👍
Really enjoyed this one! Books are my passion.
I read a Midwife's Tale, purchased from you, and it was fascinating and very educational.
Shout out to Washington Irving and to whoever wrote Wieland!
I think that anyone who is interested in 18th century history needs to have a copy of Thomas Paine's Common Sense in their Library.
An Madison on the writing of the Constitution.
Wasn’t able to watch live but fellow book lover here 😁. Great episode!
I love books and libraries. Great episode ❤
Weather perfect here in South Dakota as well. 70 all day, a few clouds and a nice breeze
Storms here in the north east all week.
Thank you, Jon, Lauren and Ivy! *Feeding Nelson's Navy* sounds like a great companion volume for Aubrey/Maturin series fans.
I loved talking historical things with your Father at many re-enactments over the years.
I was hoping you’d make and explain the first tomato sandwiches
I feel like the cooking utensils would be a good few episodes, what the kitchen would've looked like, how they delt with burned on char, etc.
85 degrees and rainy here in New Jersey.
How about books on Connecticut, the Nutmeg State.???
I live in CT and would like to see this too!
I'm a registered Bibliophile and chocoholic 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣as Jefferson said I cannot live without books
Very grateful for this weekly livestream
I haven't been to the Nutmeg Tavern in a long time, it's different, with only Jon on screen and no Ryan reading the comments.
It's possibly because it's holiday time, gives the others a break
@@tuppybrill4915 Hope so! I used to really enjoy it.
Late in watching, really windy in Northeastern Mn, late husband had alot of books, I still have a number of references books
I would guess that there are no contemporary books on woodsman's skills because you didn't learn that from a book you learnt it from a woodsman.
Thanks for sharing with us Jon, Lauren and Ivie. Enjoyed your coverage of libraries. Looking up some of those Old Books and how much they are now is unreal the value of some of them. I still haven't found a reasonable priced (to me) Black Powder Bible handbook that I'm looking for. Maybe some day?? Thanks for sharing this time with us, stay safe and keep up the fun you all have around there. Fred.
Great show- love the live stuff!
I suppose the library of Alexandria never happened
I think he’s suggesting and emphasizing the lending aspect. Alexandria, what is known of it, was probably a massive collection for intellectuals to study there. Just a guess.
Should come give us a hand this fall at the mississinewa 1812. Developing a sight of you're a member you can have voting rights and a good say for merchants
Jon has your diet changed to more colonial type meals, and has your health Improved ?
Frau Townsend does all the cooking; he's not allowed to cook at home-there is no change in diet.
