- This is an old Hymn that you may be familiar with. I have a version of it available on iTunes at this link.

Please let me know what you think.
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
The emblem of suff'ring and shame;
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain.
Refrain:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
Till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
And exchange it some day for a crown.
Oh, that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
Has a wondrous attraction for me;
For the dear Lamb of God left His glory above
To bear it to dark Calvary.
In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
A wondrous beauty I see,
For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
To pardon and sanctify me.
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true;
Its shame and reproach gladly bear;
Then He'll call me some day to my home far away,
Where His glory forever I'll share.
This is by far my favorite version of this song. It's not the 'best' version, but this one one has heart and soul that other versions lack. Thank you for this. May God bless you and keep you.
My great-grandmother wanted me to sing this song at her funeral, so I went downtown to June Burns and she helped me get to where I could sing this song and not embarrass everyone. When Grandma finally died in December 1964, the snow was so deep that we weren't even sure we could make it to Sandpoint for the funeral so I was off the hook. Jack Brown came by and plowed the driveway so we could get onto the road. You sing it way better than I could ever have. It was also my Mom's favorite hymn.
I realize this video is 8 years old but this is my favorite hymn of all time and this version is awesome!
Oh Jesus how I can’t understand why you did it.. but You did and I love You more than ever! Beautiful voice that Jesus gave you! Please continue to bring His kingdom down to our world
Thank you for singing ALL of the verses to this beautiful timeless hymn.

Ephesians 1:7
Wow! Thank you.
Beautiful job
Jonathan, did this joy you have come immediately when you confessed and believed? Or did it happen over time? I need this joy. You radiate light. Your not normal. Thank-you for not being normal.
I have been a believer most of my life. I am humbled by your compliment. I think one of the keys to joy is thankfulness. You will not find joy by pursuing joy you will find it by serving others and being thankful for even the smallest blessings in your life.
I'm 47 and all my life never believed and never was thankful for anything. I thought Lord Jesus was a fairy tale. And how could God make his home in a man? It was all foolishness until now. Now I am thankful and I do believe. And if it takes a fool to believe what Jesus did for me, then a thankful fool I'll be. I see your videos and I know that God makes a home in men. In their hearts, in their lives, in their praises.
I have a new international version bible that my grandmother gave me in 1986 before she passed. Today is my day off and I read the gospel of John. It is good. When I read in the 4th chapter "Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am HE," my heart skipped a beat and my chest ached. What power in these words. What life. This is the God I mocked all my life. And even as I mocked him he waited patiently for me. He took the punishment for MY mocking...... because he wanted to. It's no wonder the world hates him. They don't know what to do with that kind of love. I know now. Receive it and give it.
+Gavin Easton Keep reading brother. Thanks for sharing your journey.
Hey Jonathan I loved the song. I was wondering what chords are you using? Are you using a capo? God Bless
Hi Jonathan, any chance I could find the chords you are using anywhere? Perhaps you could email them to me if not?
Best,paul
Paul, it’s been so long since I recorded this I’m really not sure what chords I used. I’m pretty sure I just googled it and invented a way to play it that stayed close to the original melody.
@@JonathanSchmitz no sweat :) , I figured out your capo’s on the 4th fret. I’m all set! Thanks so much
why don't you show how you are playing it ? your hands
