- The former Raices Program of Boys & Girls Harbor presented a yearly Conversation withe the Masters moderated by Aurora Flores that featured percussionist/ bandleader & Fania All-Star Ray Barretto in its debut year to a fully packed gymnasium studio. Watch Ray Barretto become animated as he demonstrates the Watusi dance, dishes on Ruben Blades, auditions for Tito Puente at the Palladium Ballroom and explained Latin music in jazz. Considered the most recorded congüero in the history of jazz, Ray Barretto was the recipient of an NEA Jazz Masters Award before his passing. Aurora Flores is a writer, historian & bandleader of Zon del Barrio living in New York.

Al decir mejor encierra mucho, Barretto es un músico completo, El toca lo que quiere producir, El escoge el sonido de la banda, es un director que dirige el grupo en cada presentación, es un músico con visión, capaz de funcionar con bandas de jazz, es un músico que sabe lo que la gente quiere, y siempre produce éxitos que se hacen populares, a parte de todo esto Barretto tiene su propia técnica o estilo de tocar la congas, no toca como tocan todos, y además tiene un peso o volumen sólido que le da su nombre “ MANOS DURAS “, congueros todos, solo hubo y habrá un MANOS DURAS no habrá otro, es el mismo caso con TITO PUENTE, hay muchos timbaleros pero solo hubo un Rey. !

I was reading Esmeralda Santiago’s book “Casi Mujer”, a memoir about a Puerto Rican girl’s coming of age in the Brooklyn of the 1960s and I shouted out with glee when she described going out to dance for the first time in Manhattan - to no other than Ray Barretto. I thought yes sister, speak the history. So I put on a few of Rays tunes. Then, I looked up this wonderful interview. I was just a kid in the 70s but for me today Ray’s music lives on. It was great of Ray to describe for what Latinos is a common sentiment when he said he loves Latin music but it’s not all that he is, and that he loves jazz too and that there is more to him. Thank you Ray - a class act.

quince “, he’s father was olso a musician who loves to play at Christmas , we used to go for Christmas around the neighborhood and bring parrandas to our friend , and his brother Sammy was olso a musician, that plays air instruments 🎺, I grow up more around Sammy because we are same age.

I was at Barretto’s concert at UPR, Puerto Rico. It was circa July or August 1990. I had just lost my dad two months prior and I was heart broken, and that was my first chance to try to crack a smile after the pain I was going through. And I only would’ve broken out of my mourning for something special. I was (am) a huge fan of Ray and I remembered asking my mom for her permission to go to a party (I was a grown up but felt like I owed that respect to my mother and sisters, which were mourning). Yea, I was part of that huge 10 mins standing ovation yelling “arriba Watusi”. Great times.

Brooklyn native here, OMG he mentioned Bobby Capo my father used to sing in the group with Bobby Capo , i remember my brother's always making these drum 🥁 sound and guitar hand movements on anything

I have been straining my brain on this Bronx awesome musician with deep history. He passed a few years ago. But thus interview expands his gift to us. I play his music almost every night for therapy aside from dancing at the Hunts Point Place, the Courso, the Village Gate in the 60s and 70s. God blessed us: POWER!

Ray barretto I used to listen to a lot of your music I've always loved your salsa sound truly with a New York flavor salsa. One of the records you did but it was non salsa where you had to win back the salsa audience of New York when you did the other road album wish I found it to be an incredible sound of a true New York Regan Latin jazz experimental sound that became one of the great albums I still ahead of his time even till now at 2022 and beyond I've always been in love with music I've always wanted to do something constructive different innovative extronically unique which never materialize I got stuck in my own world of nothing but you became something I have to take my hat off to you and congratulate you for making this legacy thank you for your music maybe I'll develop my own but in these times I feel they should be some serious writing that talk about the times of today the past has passed not much different from yesterday

Saludos Aurora...i'm really proud of you ! i've seen this interview a few times and others you have made and every time you do that, i get tears in my eyes..why ? Because it takes me back to the old days in the bronx where i can mention so much places and especially with music. Sin casi saber hablar español e ir a visitar a mi abuela in prospect ave. and always hear diferent kind of music. I recorded that music in my heart and for that reason I became a musician. I really thank her !! I blame my grandmother for having that music where she use to live in the basement, where all tha family party was done. Si no llega ser por ella, no hubiera conocido esa hermosa musica nuestra.."LA MUSICA LATINA" by her I even knew what was musica de santeria because she was into that and it blew my mind hearing los tambores y los bata.
So you see, I really thank you for taking us thru culture history from where we came from, even in bad times where gangs and drugs where the king of the streets and we or I might say our parents manage to keep us safe till we had our own choice of living..Wow what memories. I sometimes go to you tube and manage to see how the Bronx use to be by then, but in the face of latin music, then came the Disco ..etc. !!

35:30...Part of the remaining time of the concert was later on released on the album "LATIN SOUL ROCK" which was done on the studio, not live. Soul MaKossa and Héctor Lavoe's MI GENTE were recorded live in San Juan, Puerto Rico even thought the album liner notes say it was recorded at Yankee Stadium.

Pero como te dije anteriormente, respeto tu opinion y entiendo que como fanatico de Mr Ray Barretto te sientes de esta forma pero yo hablo de la parte tecnica como y estudiante del tambor que he sido y sigo siendo desde temprano en los 70s aunque tuve un receso de 22 años que pase con dos de las unidades mas elitas de las fuerzas armadas (The 82d ABN DIV and the Army Special Forces)

Punto y aparte. mientras todos estos Grandes Gongueros pegaban 6 a 8 golpes a la Hembra y el Macho , BARRETO solo pegaba 4 golpes Certeros, Precisos y Exactos , Era la misma Esencia del jazz,del son montuno, del gua guaco, de la gua racha, en fin su técnica combinaba todos los géneros musicales dándole ese sentimiento y sabrosura de la misma crema Nata de la SALSA DURA Y GORDOTA. Respeto todos los comentarios anteriores, pero esta es mi humilde opinion.
