Excellent refresher, good to be reminded of the things we forget... I also have the manfrotto tripod, and as you say would never dream of using it with the centre column swung out, UNLESS I am doing macro and want to get down to ground level, with the legs spread and the column swung out it allows me to get right down to the ground...
HI Oliver, really useful video ... you mention that salt water and sand are an enemy of carbon fibre tubes ... does that also go for aluminium, or would an aluminium tripod be any better in water? I'm thinking of buying either the Sirui 7C or 7A based on another of your videos
The combination of salt water and sand isn't ideal for any tripod material. I wouldn’t say either material is better for seascapes. Key is to clean the legs properly after a hard day of usage.
Great tips, Oliver. I have never used the spikes with my tripod! Next time I go out I am going to use it! I have had issues of stability in the field using the standard rubber ends! I also use a wireless trigger as I have had problems with the cord of the trigger causing some e blurring. ALSO, is wobbly wibbly an advanced photographic term?? Another very helpful video!! Thanks!
There is a reason why most tripods come with a set of spikes. Especially on fields or grass it makes a massive difference buddy. Try it yourself and let me know. Yes, 'wibbly wobbly' can be found in the encyclopedia photographica - LOL

I was parked at the side of you at Aberystwyth rugby club on Sunday night, Unfortunately I didn’t get the chance to speak to you before I had to leave, I could have used some advice on tripods and photography. I have recently bought a spotting scope and quickly realised I needed to upgrade my £20 tripod I’ve had for years. I bought an £80 Manfrotto and although it’s a thousand times better than my old one I don’t think it’s heavy duty enough for a heavy scope or camera. I know tripods can cost several hundreds of pounds but is there any alternative on a budget ?
Hey Steve, how cool is that, I assume it was the nice VW next to me. Shame we didn't have a chance to chat, I could have let you play with some of my tripods. The thing with tripods is that you have three criteria: stable, lightweight and affordable. Unfortunately you can only have two of them together. A stable and lightweight tripod will always cost a fortune. Now in your case, I guess you don't want to compromise on stability, so if the budget is limited, then it will be a bit heavier... Best to the your camera or scope to a shop, where you can test it directly and choose to your requirement. Oh, and finally make sure the head is matching your equipment too. Apologies if that isn't really helpful for you. But maybe we meet at another site one day... 😊
@@OliverHerbold hi Oliver, thanks for quick reply, I was in the motorhome on the side of you next to club house, regarding tripods, weight is not so much of an issue, I only use it around the van when we are travelling, don’t really take it walking as I like to travel light, usually with my drone taking photos. Have a look at my channel see what you think. Took some footage of Aberystwyth but not uploaded yet .

Great video and some points that new for me. I have a question to the little Sirui c7. I search a tripod and the 7c seems like a good price performace. I would like use it with a medium format film camera, the Pentacon six tl and in the future mayby with a huge lens. For example with the Carl Zeiss sonnar 180mm 2.8 and together it weights between 2-3 Kg. And I want to do long exposure at night. Is the Sirui 7C suitable or should I search for another tripod. Thanks
The Sirui is certainly good value for money, but: In terms of weight, you ask a lot of a travel tripod. I have used it for long exposures with a Canon 5D Mark III and stabilised lenses and it worked - in low wind conditions. In your case I would choose the next bigger and more stable option. Best to take your camera to a shop, where they let you test it. Let me know about your decision...
