From 37:00 and onwards, Robin's explanation of the origin of the sacred really surprised me in a "oh! that's how it is" way. I haven't covered uncertainties or details yet but it seems plausible, and a good theory to keep in mind anyway. Thanks for an excellent conversation! Oh, and I should point out: There's a difference between "explaining" and "explaining away". I too have my sacred things, and I'm happy to understand exactly why they're sacred to me, but those explanations do not necessarily make them less important to me.
Therapy culture is moving a big shift towards how we feel ("in your body!") as more sacred compared other more external things (Also consider the ideals in children's movies like Inside Out, Turning Red, Moana, Encanto) which uphold feeling good compared to conquering external challenges. Personally I feel like I went through what felt religious conversion to therapy-feeling-sacredness, and am now trying to deconvert from this and treat my career w/ more sacredness, but don't feel like there are as many arguments on the other side.
I would appreciate a reference (or even better, a direct link) to "the paper" being discussed here. Apologies if I missed a reference to ii in the first 30 minutes...
My sense without reading the article is that sacred here is being overdetermined. People have limited bandwidth and ignore a great deal because they don't have the ability to pay closer attention, not necessarily because they treat it as sacred.
imagine, there would be a culture of discourse in politics (again?), where debates are being discussed in this healthy sounding way, and use of language, like these gentlemen are practising here..
Excellent!..I appeciate so much!Thank you.
