9:04 Intermediate player here. I have the theory and patterns here well in hand (pun intended). What I love about this channel more than any other and keep coming back for is the time and phrasing! Looking beyond the notes, 14:00 is a master class in tasty grooves: note length choices, pocket, and dynamics! Instructive contrast from the rock groove at 5:13 which, while the note choices and time are fine, the groove totally flattens out all the funk in the drum line. Oh and of course the tone from that Stingray is *chefskiss*
Hi Dan… self taught two years playing the bass… I wouldn’t call myself a bass player yet. My technique blows. I love your channel because you just talk about playing… no gimmicks, no BS… just how to play the bass! What I need to do is work on the fundamentals, play to drum tracks, and learn how to play… and not so much time on learning tunes. Agree with @arieltz23, bass sounds great… what strings you playing? Rounds, flats, etc.
Thanks! Old (ish) Elites Players 45-105. They’re stainless steel. Bass is up and treble down and it’s a vintage StingRay. That’s the secret. By the way, you ARE a bass player right now.

What a great idea for a website, Dan! I really like the combo of drums and bass on one platform sharing riffs for each. Absolutely brilliant!! Thank you so much for the lesson and backing tracks. I know what I'll be working on for the next month...

@@OnlineBassCourses Thank you for your response. For me learning to play bass guitar is fun and mentally challenging never work or boring, thank you again for doing your part to help making being a Bassist so cool 😎
Hi Dan. I plays for 1.5y and learn with bassbuzz and a teacher to fix stuff. I really like your work. Everything is perfectly intelligible for me and you give me lots of idea to practice more. I think I have to improve on rythms and build some sort of library. When I noodle I always play the same basic rythms. Also good to hear you remake your website. I like your work but until now I didn't find where I can spend... I hesitate to buy your books but I prefer videos.
I’ve been playing bass for 9 months ( no musical background) and you’ve been very inspiring teacher for me so far. I’m 29 and sometimes thinking about is it to late to playing bass ör any musical instrument !!? But it seems no temporary hobby, ı’ll play whenever it goes.
This is absolutely what I was missing RHYTHNM is the key for me first then all the other elements finally make sense . I was stumped until the light came on . Variable rhythms!!!!! Awesome!!
nice work man: friendly, casual, practical. you got good touch. i notice youre using my old trick of jamming your thumb between the e and a strings. requires almost zero practice :)) i rate myself beginner-intermediate. will start busking with a guitarist mate soonest, then go open mic nights
Thank you! Yes; the old floating thumb technique. Good for muting. Sometimes I rest it there, sometimes it’s more mobile. It just depends on the context.
@@OnlineBassCourses likewise. there's 5 damping techniques i use, they all tend to come online more or less instinctively after a session's practice with each. after that, it's just the odd refresher course. which is good, cos you have to get very deliberate and slow with the practice. damping open strings is one of the few things i actually dislike about bass; it's a sort of tax you have to pay for permission to sound a note. i'm like, "can i just sound the stupid note without the other 3 strings playing themselves!??"
Thank you so much Dan - I always take away a building block or two quickly. That bass sounds so good but I'm not sure if its the bass, or if you are almost always muting every note for that staccato punchy sound ?

Dan, SO curious now. Seen at the end - if you are going to use plectrum technique, why would you, personally, NOT also just use a pick? Pretty sure I know what you will say, but I'm curious what your thoughts are on the topic. GREAT lesson!
Thanks! That technique - chucking - differs from the picking technique despite some similarities. It's different in feel and tone. I'd use a pick for rock and some fast lines. Chucking is great for funky stuff; you also don't need to pick up a plectrum!
Hello Dan, great and helpful video, as always! This is little bit off-topic question, but, how do you find the slab, non-contoured body comfortable when playing sitting down? Especially how about the forearm? Love the sound of the classic Stingray, it's a killer bass!
Thanks! I think most of my basses have contours. In any case, none of them bother me enough to think about it at all. Even slab body basses I’ve played feel fine (to me) when playing seated.
I’ve played guitar for 50 years, any tips on getting the alternate plucking with the right hand working. I get the stuff on the neck but just can’t get the right hand working the way you do. I tend just to use one finger
It’s just one of those really annoying things that you have to drill over and over. Slowly and every day. You’ll soon get it together. I had to similar when learning to use a plectrum. You can do it!
@@OnlineBassCourses absolutely! That’s a dream bass for me, I wasn’t sure if it was a 70s or a reissue, have you ever seen Johnny Lee long? He has this gorgeous 76 it’s absolutely stunning, I love your black 78 man, you are blessed brother
@@bassimprovjams3772 I don't think so... They're great basses if you can get your hands on one. Check that the truss rod has some movement in it if you do. This one is tricky to set, and the action is a little high. Sounds great though!

You either have to turrn your bass guitar up or decrease the bass and increase some treble. You are barely coming through.
