Both men closed off? No. That was the whole point. Josh's character yes - Alec's character, not at all. He was a badly treated outsider, but his openness and kind, caring nature, his vulnerability, and his self-respect eventually transform another human being. Johnny grew from someone who knew only anger and self-loathing into someone with hope, courage, and the ability to love. An incredibly powerful and important movie for anyone to see. This review does it no justice.
Very unprofessional review. Full of inacurracies (geographical and movie factual). They should have at least googled some stuff of read the film's plot again, the ycan´t make such mistakes
Somebody wasn't paying attention. Gemma Jones plays his GRANDMOTHER. There is a mention in the film of the mother walking out, possibly along with his father's frostiness, contributing to the fact that he obviously can't entrust anybody with his feelings. As for subtitles, guys, really, you are such wusses. Here in the UK we manage to cope with movies set in the southern states of the US, where single syllable words somehow acquire three, without too much problem.
Thank you tony bennet for that!!!! the audacity she has to call herself a film critic, i'm from South Asia n I could easily understand what John was saying about her mother walking out on him, n she'd have to be blind to not see GEMMA JONES name at the end credits.... n d osterity of thinking her to b d mother when John clearly can b heard calling her nan!!!! I SIMPLY CAN'T....
I understood all of the facts they got wrong simply from watching the trailer alone, and I'm from Singapore! LOL! LOVE the fact that they spoke in local dialect, by the way.
i saw this yesterday, and it really hit me in the feels. everything was just so beautiful and natural, i absolutely loved it. 9/10 from me, 10/10 from my girlfriend.
I was born and raised about 10 km west from the setting of this film, therefore I know a lot about the setting and context. This review really shocks me as how ignorant and misinformed the reviewers are.....makes me question their ability to review other movies too. So many assumptions on the part of the reviewers that are basically not true.
Indeed. As I said in reply to another comment, I understood most of the facts they got wrong simply from watching the trailer alone, and I'm from Singapore! LOVE all movies filmed in local dialect, by the way., whether this one or based in another language family.
You didn't mention Alec Secareanu's name in the first line of the description just because he's Romanian, right? After all, he's a leading actor in this movie or not?
Incredible film, especially post-Brexit. One of my favourites of the year. Also one of the few gay romance films that isn't sexless. Never thought people could bond over a fire and pot noodles.
FYI - Here in Blighty, the beautiful Yorkshire Dales has oft been referred to as "God's own country." Can't remember who first coined the term, but yeah, the Yorkshire Dales is the location. :)
I basically couldn't understand the (hard) Yorkshire dialect (I had to guess most of it) and I attributed it to me being an non native English speaker (who doesn't live in an English speaking country by the way), basically Gheorghie was the one to guide me into what they were speaking about. I'm relieved it wasn't (just) me. Good luck that the acting spoke louder and clearer than the words. It's a good movie by the way though certainly needs some subtitles for the broader, out of the UK, (I guess) audiences.
magnvss Having older kin, I kept thinking that having English subtitles would be good for those older and hard of hearing. I myself had trouble at times understanding all the spoken dialogue and would have to go back on the DVD to listen to it again.
i am so extremely envious of you for having watched Call Me By Your Name. i have been waiting too long! it premieres here in Norway on the 26th of JANUARY like wtf
D Mc that may be so. However, for me, I’ve seen a ton of films, several with gay characters and themes. This thematically and in the main premise of the film is very close to Brokeback.
I’d say it’s a compliment to compare it to Brokeback, but I watched it for the same sex love. And I heard about it on the comment section on youtube, recommending gay films. It’s so amazing ❤️
OeI just sow the tailer.I feeled this must be boring. But it suprise me in the way that I will never forget, it's sometjing very different, so nature, so touchebale , it show us how much the ife can be beautifl even in the hardesr places and situations, so now is just one of my best movies.
I wish I liked this review. I wish I wasn’t so angry at their ignorance and off handed about theGeography of Great Britten. He obviously doesn’t care and probably enjoys these comments. It’s important where a film is set, which is not - over there somewhere.
Why are these blabbering idiots there. Just one - wich ever - scene would show more then this noise. God's Own Country is one of the best gay movies I have seen and Josh O'Connor ia an absolute revelation. What a guy. (I must be in love) . Thank you Josh. G
The film's basic structure is very similar to Call me by your Name (lonely protagonist receives a stranger for the family, doesn't like him at first but falls for him)
She's the grandmother. Josh O'Conner mentions the next time they're intimate in the morning that the mom left them when he was a child. He lives with dad and grandmother.
I hope you guys read these comments, but lovely to see you praise such a lovely film, with it has to be said, accents that were very tough to understand, its my fave film of the year, Dunkirk is my 2nd, and after I saw that I didnt think that anything could top that
Yikes - Ireland is ONE COUNTRY and England is another. Just like France is one country and India is another, even tho the British did rule over India and Ireland for many years. Don't call a Yorkshireman Irish if you don't want a bloody nose!! These commentators need some history lessons! Wonder if they confuse Irish with Indian?
I think it needed more gay naked sex 😝 No, but , yeah. Anyway, honestly it’s a beautiful story about a hard life and I love the ending 💗 Personal favorites: 1. Brokeback Mountain 2. Gods Own Country 3. Call me by your name Any other “gay” movies I should check out?
The sex and nudity were not sensationalized in this film - a more honest approach than Brokeback or Call Me By Your Name, which couldn't seem to come to terms with those elements.
Loved this movie but the biggest annoyance in it for me was why did they go swimming in their underwear?? So much nudity in the movie but then when it’s time to skinnydip let’s wear our undies instead?? Weird!
According to the interview they did, the actors didn't want to go in the water (well at least the English one didn't). It was icy enough to freeze their bollocks off, and they were only in the water for 15 secs before they had to get out. The English one said he threw up after.
Wow, these two are the worst. They don't even get the location right, which is probably the biggest character in the film. She also called him Josh… His name is Johnny. What a disaster review!
Scenery, sheep, misery, bumming, repeat. What a dull film, could only stomach 40 minutes, even playing at 2x speed. Another typical arty-farty film! What happened to likeable characters, and plot?
This movie was the opposite of dramatic. Which is not really a bad thing, but yeah it dragged so hard at several points throughout. Also, yeah Brokeback Mountain did this first and much better. Brokeback is a 10. I’d give this a 7 and that’s generous. It’s a decent film worth seeing, but it’s a debut feature and it shows.
Dragged? I loved the pacing and minimal dialogue - we got to rely on the visuals and atmosphere, which gave a natural build to their developing relationship. People today have such short attention spans.
Alonso, stop swearing please. As for this film...God help the people who made, produced and were featured in it. At least it doesn't star James Franco.
Not looking forward to your Call Me By Your Name review where yet another group glosses over the fact that it's about an adult man having a relationship with a teenager. Odd how people are all for preaching against harmful abusers but then when it's romanticized and glorified... we all forget :S
I'm 24 as well, couldn't imagine being with anyone under 20. but this story isn't about me or you, or the average 24 year old and the average 17 year old. it's a coming of age story set in Italy in the 80's. it's about that first love. and it's NOT romanticizing abuse. abuse has nothing to do with it.
Yeah, uhhhh adults preying on teenagers isn't love or romantic lmao. Any adult who dates a child is a predator and a creep and uhhh 17 year olds are children. Lmao. God.
Both men closed off? No. That was the whole point. Josh's character yes - Alec's character, not at all. He was a badly treated outsider, but his openness and kind, caring nature, his vulnerability, and his self-respect eventually transform another human being. This review does it no justice.
This! Gheorgie's character is nurturing and open, that's why you see him taking care of the little lamb. He's the complete opposite of Johnny.
+Alejandra Mercado - Absolutely true :)
This movie showed the value of showing love and showing everyone that everyone needs love
As an American I apologize for these two and their geographical inaccuracies in not knowing that Ireland is on the other side of Romania.
"Ireland, The UK."
Oh, boy.
VexonCross Alonso Duralde single-handedly restarts The Troubles.
@SLACKER614 Hahahaha..."americans"
Ireland? Up in north england somewhere? Definitely UK.
UGH!
Adding to the notion that Americans don't know places in the world outside of the US.
Yeah I gotta say this review stinks
North Yorkshire, the Rustic rural bit of Yorkshire, not the fun, happening, urban bits.
Very unprofessional review. Full of inacurracies (geographical and movie factual). They should have at least googled some stuff of read the film's plot again, the ycan´t make such mistakes
Yorkshire is not Ireland hahaha

Yes, Johnny lives on the farm with his father and grandmother.
I understood all of the facts they got wrong simply from watching the trailer alone, and I'm from Singapore! LOL!
LOVE the fact that they spoke in local dialect, by the way.
Nan = grandma. Also called nanna.
i saw this yesterday, and it really hit me in the feels. everything was just so beautiful and natural, i absolutely loved it. 9/10 from me, 10/10 from my girlfriend.
Where did u saw it
Sara Bonavolontà i’m in norway so i saw it at the cinema
@Pod Where did you see* it 😂
Not his parents; his father and grand mother.
The film is good the review not
I was born and raised about 10 km west from the setting of this film, therefore I know a lot about the setting and context. MyMpc1 I agree it was a poor review but can u elaborate on what u mean? What assumptions etc?
They're americans. I didn't expect too much of them
At least we can agree on the fact that this movie is amazing. I had low expectations watching it at first. But ended up being one of my favorites.
You didn't mention Alec Secareanu's name in the first line of the description just because he's Romanian, right? After all, he's a leading actor in this movie or not?
Amedeo Ene relax dude. Not that deep
Incredible film, especially post-Brexit. One of my favourites of the year. Also one of the few gay romance films that isn't sexless. Never thought people could bond over a fire and pot noodles.
Messofanego I accidentally disliked your comment, sorry didn’t mean too.
The mother is actually known. She also the mother in Bridget Jones Diary and the mother in Sense and Sensibility.
She’s the grandma.
Good ending.....His Father and Nan approved the relationship.....It was just so touching.....
FYI - Here in Blighty, the beautiful Yorkshire Dales has oft been referred to as "God's own country." Can't remember who first coined the term, but yeah, the Yorkshire Dales is the location. :)
A little research before you do a review!
I basically couldn't understand the (hard) Yorkshire dialect (I had to guess most of it) and I attributed it to me being an non native English speaker (who doesn't live in an English speaking country by the way), basically Gheorghie was the one to guide me into what they were speaking about. There were a lot of scenes with little dialogue - so much was conveyed by facial expressions.
i am so extremely envious of you for having watched Call Me By Your Name. i have been waiting too long! it premieres here in Norway on the 26th of JANUARY like wtf
I loved this movie. It's like a punch in the heart, then somebody comes along, kiss it, and makes it all better.
Another British romance set in the Yorkshire dales: Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. A landscape that evokes passion. Thanks for the review.
IRELAND IS NOT THE SAME THING AS THE U.K.!!!!!!!
They're American.
Here's the set-up: Josh O'Connor is living with his father and grandmother.
The scenery played a big part in this movie I think. A little bragging of disinterests to the location made me really annoyed.
It's sad that so many people's only gay film reference is Brokeback Mountain and that they seem to need to bring it up to dismiss this movie.
It’s Brokeback Mountain but based in England and with a happy ending.
Ireland not in the UK lol
OeI just sow the tailer.I feeled this must be boring. But it suprise me in the way that I will never forget, it's sometjing very different, so nature, so touchebale , it show us how much the ife can be beautifl even in the hardesr places and situations, so now is just one of my best movies.
FYI no subtitles on the DVD. A stupid move for an otherwise brilliant film.
I wish I liked this review. I wish I wasn’t so angry at their ignorance and off handed about theGeography of Great Britten.
He obviously doesn’t care and probably enjoys these comments.
It’s important where a film is set, which is not - over there somewhere.
Great Britain. Make sure your rants get the spelling right!
I loved this gorgeously filmed movie/ So happy for the hopeful ending, touching and sweet.
Why are these blabbering idiots there. Just one - wich ever - scene would show more then this noise. God's Own Country is one of the best gay movies I have seen and Josh O'Connor ia an absolute revelation. What a guy. (I must be in love) . Thank you Josh. G
The film's basic structure is very similar to Call me by your Name (lonely protagonist receives a stranger for the family, doesn't like him at first but falls for him)
Watch it Alonso... Walking on thin ice with your geography there...
I'm afraid he fell in.
"It's somewhere, UK, Ireland" How ignorant!
A new movie from Ireland? Ummm it's Yorkshire, I don't know. YORKSHIRE IS NOT IN IRELAND.
Going into this movie I was had a feeling I wasn't going to like it but it prove me wrong. It so good.
This is a very good movie that one does not want to miss. It is about the best gay-themed film that I have seen since "4 Moons."
She's the grandmother. Josh O'Conner mentions the next time they're intimate in the morning that the mom left them when he was a child. He lives with dad and grandmother.
Just saw this tonight on Netflix, and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long. Especially after CMBYN was a life-changing film for me.
Ireland? Yikes. Sorry, not all Americans are like this.
Alec legt er zoveel liefde, gevoel, romantiek en emotie in. Ik kan zo verliefd worden op zo'n jongen.
I have been waiting for this film for months. Still waiting...
I hope you guys read these comments, but lovely to see you praise such a lovely film, with it has to be said, accents that were very tough to understand, its my fave film of the year, Dunkirk is my 2nd, and after I saw that I didnt think that anything could top that
One of the most emotional films I have ever seen
Geweldige film en top acteurs , met zoveel emotie en gevoel gespeeld. Bravo,Bravo,Bravo .
Amazing movie! So raw, so intense, a little depressive sometimes and so tender at the same time.
it is sad that these two fulfilling the cliche that Americans are poor at geography and pronouning slightly foreign surnames.
There were no English subtitles on the DVD I rented. This is a weakness of the production, in my opinion.
Excellent film ...I really love this
Yikes - Ireland is ONE COUNTRY and England is another. Just like France is one country and India is another, even tho the British did rule over India and Ireland for many years. Don't call a Yorkshireman Irish if you don't want a bloody nose!! These commentators need some history lessons! Wonder if they confuse Irish with Indian?
Miguel De La O you know Americans - they call people who have lived in the country INDIAN - what do one expect
England isn't a country it's part of the U.K.
Beautiful movie!
Just be careful lads. Ireland is not the UK.
I think it needed more gay naked sex 😝 No, but , yeah. Anyway, honestly it’s a beautiful story about a hard life and I love the ending 💗 Personal favorites: 1. Brokeback Mountain 2. Gods Own Country 3. Call me by your name

Really stupid. American critics Yorkshire is in Northern England and Ireland is a separate country.
I want to see Call Me by Your Name RIGHT NOW!!!!!
yorkshire
Alonso trying to start the war again "Ireland, the UK" LOL
Give them geography lessons please and thank you x
Broke back moorland
Loved this movie but the biggest annoyance in it for me was why did they go swimming in their underwear?? So much nudity in the movie but then when it’s time to skinnydip let’s wear our undies instead?? Weird!

Why are they talking about sex talk about the real message of the film
Wow, these two are the worst. They don't even get the location right, which is probably the biggest character in the film. She also called him Josh… His name is Johnny. What a disaster review!
The actor is Josh O’ Connor
What he didn’t even know what country the movie was from? Not a great way to start a review.
looking forward to this way more than Call Me By Your Name. (And Broke back Mountain is a bad movie... shhhh)
Review Porto
what are you talking about ?
the conversation level is very high from your part.
Yes, because all this movie was trying to do was give "the gays" more sex and nudity. Yes, dear straights, that's all we wanted.
Ugh. Call me crazy but for me it is a very European movie....Google it;)
Scenery, sheep, misery, bumming, repeat. What a dull film, could only stomach 40 minutes, even playing at 2x speed. Another typical arty-farty film! What happened to likeable characters, and plot?
Ireland and the U.K. are two separate nations.
Wow, Alonso. Staggering ignorance there.

ZZZZZZZZZZz

they're 24 and 17. it's not like it's a 40 year man and a 14 year old boy.
it's an adult and a teenager?? like i'm 24 and uhhh let me tell you 17 year olds are CHILDREN
Lmao. God.
Age of consent in Britain is 16. So while I personally wouldn't be comfortable with it, there clearly are different opinions and standards.
Gross
