Grats on the new job! I agree on the slow living/sewing. I've also been moving towards making pieces that are me and will last for years. I try to plan my wardrobe and only buy things I have planned for. It doesn't always work but I'm getting better with it! I learned quite a lot from making my most recent (planned) coat - it took about a full working week of 40ish hours in total and finishing it was so satisfying! I did a lot of hand sewing and used more vintage/coutoure techniques, I will incorporate more into my sewing going forward for sure!
Hi! I’m sorry I’m finally responding!! I love your journey! And wow! 40 hours is some serious perseverance in garment making! I bet your coat is amazing! Do you have an instagram for sewing? I would love to see it as it sounds amazing! How rewarding! And I love the vintage/couture techniques - it’s something I want to improve upon next year. I hope you have a lovely weekend! 🥰
Firstly, congratulations on the new job! The dresses is just awesome, I love the photos in the snow! I love empire waist dresses. I really agree with your sentiment on fast fashion in the sewing community. I often struggle with that. Thank you for a lovely episode.
Thank you so much Katinka! I was almost a little apprehensive to talk about fast fashion with sewing but I’m glad to see some others resonate with these sentiments as well! I always love your insights as well!
Thank you for sharing this lovely video! You were such a pleasure to work with and your Avelina dress is just beautiful. Can’t wait to see what you make next 🥰
My share the same sentiments, too many clothes means limited closet space, we talk crap about fast fashion, but how sustainable are we if we make an outfit every week and cannot get a decent amount of use out of them? You explained yourself very well❤I adore your channel
You're grappling with some really deep, important issues. Ethical living is really difficult nowadays. Fast fashion is symptomatic of much of what's wrong with our current consumerist society. It's not only clothing that's cheap and nasty and falls apart after a couple of washes. Nothing we buy nowadays is built to last. I am old enough to remember when you would buy an item that was fit for purpose and lasted for years and could eventually be mended if necessary. Now, manufactured goods seem to develop faults after a year, and it costs more to repair them than it costs to buy a new one, so it gets thrown away. It's horribly wasteful of natural resources and disastrous for the environment. 😢 Sewing our own garments, ideally from natural fibres, slowly and intentionally, is definitely a step in the right direction 😊 Good luck in the new job!
The Ethical issues are something I am also questioning at the moment. The clothes falling apart is so frustrating and also, the fabric of set clothes is so badly made that you often can't mend it.
Hi Mara! I’m sorry it has taken me to long to respond! So well said and I couldn’t agree more with you! 💕 And you really nailed it regarding new products be it electronics, home goods, clothes, cars, etc. They all break down quickly and it’s cheaper to buy a replacement than to repair them. It’s so disheartening. 😐 Anyhow, I hope you are doing well! 🥰
I enjoy watching your videos. I just listen to you talk while I do my makeup or hair 😊 it’s so fun to hear what you’re thinking about and working on!
