This is one of the very few barbershop performances to get that overtone sound. In my opinion, I think this performance ranks up there with the legends. I get goosebumps every time I hear it!
That high-B overtone on the last chord is just obscene. But if you listen close right before resolving to the final chord, the loud screaming overtone starts on the high G# (third of the E7 chord), which then flies up to that high B. If you didn't understand barbershop and physics, you'd swear a fifth person stepped in and sang those two notes. I can't get over how loud and present they are. Best I've ever heard.
I've been replaying this numerous times trying to figure it out (along with this: www.barbershoptags.com/tags/The_Chordbuster_March.pdf). I can hear the overtone/fifth person on the final chord, but what exact note do you think is an overtone on the penultimate chord? The G# itself? That seems to be written in the score.
Tim Lewis I’d never seen the spots, so I see what you’re saying in that the lead is singing G# on the penultimate chord. What I’m hearing though is a G# above the tenor’s E, that goes up to the high B on that last chord. I just re-listened a few times to make sure. And I still am blown away by this. LOL
What the hell just happend? That was amazing! That final chord was the single most perfect harmonizing I have ever heard any quartet do! That was pure PERFECTION!

My jaw drops, my eyes bug out (like in the old Tom&Jerry cartoons), and I'm speechless for several seconds. This is dripping with so much AWESOME, that I can't believe it. Wow. Just wow.
I was already blown away by the tag, but then reading that the high B was an OVERTONE?! I really doubted it at first but, as stated, the Inukaza vid allows you to hear the voicing much clearer. It's definitely 1-1-3-5, with an overtone. Loudest one I've ever heard, beating out Crossroads on Lucky Old Sun. Absolutely stunning.
High school recruiting tool? You bet. As an old fart, I would prefer to see the young 'uns sing the snot out of a classic chart (and add a tag like that) than try to take newer artists and shove them into a quasi-barbershop arrangements. (I think there is a place for that, but this is WHY barbershop)
I remember sitting with Jerry Fairchild of The Sidewinders when The Vagrants sang this at District somewhere in this era. The 'winders had this as a rep staple for many years. I remember Jerry turning to me after that tag and suggesting that he didn't think he (Tenor), Joe, Jay or Gene could get anywhere near that! (and the 'winders were known for pitching things up)
@nakedrobz no the post is any long note held for a substantial amount of time, (usually by the lead and usually near the end of a song) while the other parts sing around it, but it typically is the root or the tonic since the lead is singing it.

@sephiroth3782 You sure that B is an overtone? Heard this live (FWD 2009?) and I'm not convinced that the final isn't 1 - 3 - 5 - 1. It's like an illusion, if I'm looking for it one way, I hear it that way... Also the slide right before that - lead/bari crossing parts, and taking full advantage when the two parts are really nearby and dissonant - Gotcha did it a little better, but not for long...

That is the most absurd overtone, ever. I mean, you can't even hear the actual note the tenor hit because the overtone overpowers it. Unreal.

A "post" is a note that is held, while the other parts sing and swipe into the cadence. It is typically the tonic note, though not necessarily.
