Worked on many of these when I was a mechanic at Cummins Ontario, then started driving for a “ living “ in 76. Put some long miles in a tractor just like this one. Toronto to Moncton / Halifax split, then ran for about a year Toronto to Winnipeg. That’s a 2300 mile round trip. No sleeper just like this one. Old milk crate between the seats, with a chair cushion on top. It was brutal, but I wasn’t the only one out there doing that. Trucking was different back in those days, you picked up your load or delivered all day, and drove all night. The public driving to work in the morning weren’t unused to seeing truck drivers sleeping with a pillow over the steering wheel on an on, or off ramp, or parking lot. Truck had a 290 Cummins with a 10 speed. Pretty much bullet proof back in the day. It was a 76. Boss liked using it on long runs, as it was cheaper to run than the 350’s we had in the “ big “ trucks.
Yep. Ford's very hard manual steering and very rough riding Hendrickson suspension. These rigs had to be driven and not by a modern day steering wheel holder.
In my first job we had some older LNs like this (1974, 75, etc) Some had 3208 Cats and others had 534 gas engines. Fords were notorious for hard steering and ours were no exceptions. These usually came with Hendrickson leaf spring suspension which rode very rough.
@@MichiganDiesel can't wait. I started out with a B61 then bought a 9500 GMC with a 290, 10 sp, Hendrickson. After I sold my trucks I drove a Louisville with a 290, 6 sp and Rayco. I always liked the Louisville it was a good handy truck. Good luck and we enjoy your videos, keep them coming. God Bless
They were made a lot of people a lot of money in the ‘80 here in Australia . VT903 / 6v92 and Big Cam …which was probably the best engine pf it’s time . The die hard Ford fans loved them and the LTL with 3406 .
@@MichiganDiesel for sure! They're both Detroit's as well. ☺️ Btw i commented on your skid steer video. Something really caught my eye. Would be nice to get your email to talk with you about it. Thanks
@@MichiganDiesel seein you bring new life to that ole truck does me good 😎 not much worse than seeing classic ole iron die in a field just because most young drivers want only pete or W 900s
I suppose you may already know, that on the pump that nut with the Allen screw if you back that out a few turns it will increase throttle response, and it will put out some smoke, but for a 1979, it can smoke some. I drove an 85 Ford LNT 9000 300 Cummins, 9 speed transmission. I drove for 44 years just retired last year. I enjoyed the older trucks, the new trucks are definitely more comfortable, better heaters and air conditioning. And ride quality. I hope you have lots of luck with that truck. Did you find out why it was parked?
Thanks for sharing. I enjoy the older trucks as well. I appreciate you watching! Hopefully I will have more trucks in the future to share! Congrats on retiring! 👍
@@MichiganDiesel I've drove kws Pete's ...3 volvos me volvo rides best they ride like a caddilac trks are junk but the suspension is awesome I bet you take the truck to a alignment shop there heads will explode 🤣🤯💯
I have a 1986 L9000 glider with a 79 hood and earlier 70’s grill and a Big Cam III 300 and an Eatonfuller roadranger 9 speed with a slight fuel button upgrade and it rips i use it for an offroad wrecker in our 6,000 acre quarry for pulling out stuck or broken rigs.. i really need to find an old mixer or water truck and 6x6 this hog and do a 12 drop bracket frame and put the gas well tires on, basically monster truck tires
It took more time than money. About $500 to get a new yoke and U joint to match up to the old driveshaft. Another couple hundred for all the hardware and airlines. I got the axles from a truck that was going to the scrap yard so I didn’t have a whole lot of money into parts.

Pretty cool
Looks just like a 1 stack Sterling.
👍
Considering that Sterling is the successor to Ford's heavy truck division and mostly copied the old Ford designs.
Back when they make them to get a job done and easily maintained for years of reliability of use and straight forward work wagon.
Yup, doesn’t take that much to get them running again. 👍

Did the heater work????
The heater did work, but I had the windows down all the way home because there was a lot of exhaust in the cab.
Nice!
Thanks!
