    See pinned comment for another explanation of whether to insert first or interchange first.
    There were some topics that I didn't get to explain as thoroughly as I wanted to, but that's what part 2 is for.
    Although this tutorial is geared towards BLDers, FMCers can also learn commutators for insertions.

    I didn't understand the Interchange first or insertion first thing, how do you know which one is before the other ? Using the target's order?

    • @timothygoh-4bld649
      @timothygoh-4bld649  6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Yeah, this is definitely one of the harder concepts. Let's say your cycle is A->B->C and your interchange switches A and C, so B is the piece outside the interchange. Your insertion also inserts B into A's spot. Since B needs to go to C first (the cycle is A->B->C), you need to interchange first (this brings C into A's spot) so that you can correctly insert B into C.
      Example:
      Setup: L' D' L U L' D L U'
      Case: UBL -> LDB -> UFL
      Interchange: U
      Insertion: L' D' L
      Discussion: The interchange puts UFL into UBL's spot, and the insertion inserts LDB into UBL's spot. LDB is the piece outside the interchange and it needs to go to UFL first (the cycle is UBL->LDB->UFL). Thus, we need to interchange first (bringing UFL into UBL's spot) so that we can correctly insert LDB.
      Solution: [U, L' D' L]
      note: it would be faster to do a setup move like [U : [U, R D' R']]
      The practice doc has some more examples.

  • @tusharjamwal
    @tusharjamwal 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    honestly this is how I learnt to solve the cube many years ago. This is the concept that the algorithms A perm and Allan (3 edge cycle) use.
    The other early algorithms (Sune and Niklas) are based on a similar concept. A combination of different interchanges and insertions which are simple on their own. I think Lars Petrus' website still has these algorithms as the beginner method.
    The way you explained it was very refreshing and I think I will attempt blind solving this way myself as well.

    Thanks for making this very useful tutorial! It is interesting that although I havent learned 3 style before, I used the same conveyor belt analogy to help myself understand the I/S trick in M2 (which is quite similar to the concept of 3 style I guess?). But instead of swapping, I imagine the moves kind of push the original box towards the other direction, and undoing those move push it back to the original position.
    Along with the terminology, it really helps me understand 3 style more! I am currently working towards sub-2 with M2/OP, and will definitely come back for your whole series of 3 style tutorial when I got solid memo technique!

    in your practice sheet the 3rd. example for edges you say that "there is NOT a single move that will swap two stickers without disturbing the third" so what about F2 (setup U R’ F’ R S R’ F R S’ U’ possible solution with F2: [B L':[F2, U' S2 U]])? it's probably worse for execution and you wouldn't gain anything because with F2 there is no way to insert the 3rd without a setup but even if it's just semantics i'd say the text is wrong.
