Yiddish has its origins of course from middle High German (although written in Hebrew characters), but it also has plenty of "loanwords" from Hebrew, Russian and other "diaspora" countries, as you might expect.

From what I understand it depends on where in Germany they are from. Some dialects/accents are more like Yiddish and some are very different.

My family is Ladino so Yiddish is really a foreign language to me. My wife understands it.
