Keith Moon was on fire, his performance alone was just unbelievable He throws his floor tom, taking out two cymbals, does he say "cut! Let's do it again" No, he soldiers on with water spurting out of kit blasting him in the face
Keith Moon was too high. I'm asking you to watch him play and see if he hits the drums when his sticks are on the way up, ordinary for jazzers. He doesn't.
Yeah, The Who so thoroughly destroyed the Stones that Jagger had no choice but keep it in the vault. The Stones were not known for being a great live act.
Ok. I may be partly responsible for this getting released cos I begged Bill Wyman to release it back in 92, I think it was, when he was in Liverpool for a book signing. My GF at the time, her dad was a massive Stones fan and we were getting his new book signed for his Bday. Had my hands in my pockets and he made the joke lol I was nervous but I explained how we had only seen clips and how cool it would be, knowing HE was the Stones archivist. I was SO impassioned about it. I said that everyone wants to see it and It's an amazing time capsule, . Anyway within a few years it was released
Nicky Hopkins isn't credited on the CD. I first heard of this in 1979 thanks to Roy Carrs Rolling Stone Illustrated book. The same year I saw The Who's segment in " The Kidz Are Alright" documentary.
According to an article from Disc and Music Echo from August 9, 1969, the Stones were planning to release it, and also decided not to cut Brian from the film. "It was Brian's last TV show and we feel it would be nice to see him," said Jo Bergman, the band's personal assistant.
I don't think it was mentioned in this video but I read somewhere once that there was talk for a while of selling this production to the Who and releasing it as the Who's Rock & Roll Circus because their set was so superior to all the others. This was probably just a rumor. I also read that the original footage for the Rock & Roll Circus sat for years in Ian Stewart's barn before it was finally found. Again, probably a rumor but still interesting.
Yes, they outplayed the Stones for the sure. Mick Jagger is a great frontman, but to follow John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Mitch Mitchell was never going to be easy. But the Who... the Who. They were on fire!
I think, they didn't want to broadcast this fantastic show because of the problems with Brian Jones, who didn't really play with the Stones. Most of the time you can not hear what he is doing, and I'm not sure if the slide guitar on "No Expectations" isn't an overdub.

"It was Brian's last TV show and we feel it would be nice to see him," said Jo Bergman, the band's personal assistant. Doubtful that's why it wasn't released. It's not an especially polished special all around, that's far more likely the reason. In any case, Brian was not overdubbed. Stop posting nonsense.
@@TheaterPup What nonsense? Fact is they didn't show it and I think the reason is clear, it gave not the best impression of Brian who died only a few weeks before. Brian is seen on screen, but most of the time you can not hear what he is doing. The only song you "hear" what he is doing is "No Expectations" and this song and the slide guitar sounds different to the recording of the whole show, like it's recorded in the studio and not on that stage. That leads to the thought, it's an overdub or a playback (that would also explain why sometimes Keith' guitar sounds doubled on this song). Btw. "Salt Of The Earth", normally played with acoustic- and slide-guitar, is playback with only the vocals live....looks like there was no second guitar player who could play the slide guitar played by Keith in the studio sessions.
I was watching this on tape with a friend who was not real familiar with the Stones. When it came to the end where everyone was swaying to Salt of the Earth, I asked if she could pick out the person who would be dead in less than a year. She picked Brian Jones.
That's funny. My wife, who is an opera singer, watched the entire thing with me and thought that Brian looked better than all the rest of the Stones. Mick and Keefer in particular turned her off.
Sorry, the Who just killed I still love the Stones' set and think it was great, all the bands were great. I've had the show on VHS since it came out, same with the DVD. This show was mythical before it was released
It was shelved because the Stones, particularly Mick were up for around 24 hours and were working most of the time with production issues and were exhausted when they finally went on, and didn't feel their performance was up to par due to low energy.
Absolutely, it was a wipeout. Jagger has always been a much better businessman than singer. He knew it would have been foolish to let anyone see it in the 60s, 70s or 80s.
@@905if6was9 What you say applies to another rock star production with the Stones onstage, Lennon, English rock stars, everyone like that in the audience.
