The higher hardness rex45 aka Hap40 does work best with thin edges and when ran at a higher hardness, i.e. 65-66+. They have Japanese kitchen knives in Hap40 that are scary thin & ran between 65-68 HRC. I have a Sukenari Gyuto 240mm that's advertised @ 68 HRC, and that thing has held an edge for much longer, and maintained a much cleaner edge than anyother chef knife / Gyuto I've tried VERY MUCH AGREED ! About the hunting, gutting and skinning knifes... Fixed blades are head and shoulders above any folder

Hey Erica, I hope you’re doing well. I just got the M4 Sage. I love the titanium coating… it would look pretty sweet with some fat carbon scales. But like you said about the g10 version… I can imagine it looking almost too nice, so I’m on the fence. I find myself more drawn to the Native lightweight. It’s so stripped-down, yet perfect, I freaking love that thing! I’m looking forward to the Serrated Magnacut “salt” version… should be an awesome steel for serrations.
I have carbon fiber scales one of my m4 sage 5s…it took that knife from an ergonomic 10 into “here be dragons” level perfection. Unfortunately, there’s only one guy who makes carbon fiber and/or micarta for the sage 5 lw.
Great to hear the thinned-out Rexy Native works for you! This makes my day. 🙂 That's been my experience too, that it's way faster to sharpen with a thin secondary. I've also found that a thin blade can strop back to stupid sharp several more times than a thick blade before needing to visit the stones.
Yep, she can get a T8 and crank on that little guy. It'll get solid again. Edit: I believe LynchNW makes a stamped Ti replacement clip for the Spyderco wire clip. I've never tried one, but it looks like a solid alternative.
The m4 sage is easily my favorite 3” Spyderco. I gobble them up whenever I can get one for a decent price on eBay (which isn’t often). Edit: Honestly, the crooked rivers are more form than function. They’re an ergonomic disaster, they’re heavy and awkward…but I still love mine for some reason. I think it scratches the same itch that a good GEC or Opinel does…vintage clip point fun.

Wait, what? I haven’t sharpened my para3 yet cause I didn’t think I could with a work sharp precision (the guided thingy). It has a 320 grit diamond stone and a 600 grit diamond stone. Also a ceramic stone for polishing. Are you saying I could? Please say yes 😂
You can sharpen any steel with that. Ive done Maxamet and ASP60 just recently. Highly recommend gtting the gritomatic adapter so you can use 4x1 kme stones, but the included 320/600/ceramic works totally fine.
@@tacticalcenter8658 ehh, you know, TH-cam experts say many things lol. I hadn’t attempted it yet cause I was worried the steel would end up putting way too much wear on the stones because the diamonds aren’t bonded. Thanks for the reply.

Do you have any Golden M4? I've found their golden M4 to be really similar to their Rex 45 (pm2 M4 tanto vs rex45 native chief, specifically) but the M4 in my Advocate isn't quite on par with the two.
Yes and no. I find that M4 and Rex 45 are two very different approaches to the oroblem. M4 is not as hard, but has a high carbide volume. Rex 45 is way harder, but has low carbide volume. So M4 holds a working edge for a good long time, but only because fresh carbides keep getting exposed. Rex 45 holds its edge for a similar length of time because of such high Rockwell. But where Rex shines is in edge stability. Properly heat treated Rex will not roll or chip at extreme edge geometries. M4 on the other hand, becomes too chippy when ground nice and thin. So maybe the two could be considered comparable when ground to factory geometries. But thin Rex 45 beats the pants off of thin M4.

I used my full size crooked river during deer season last year. It really isn’t bad to clean out after dressing a deer.

The spyderco wire clip probably has a loose screw by the way utility knife wire clips can also be swapped out.

I have never met a tool steel that was hard to sharpen. Stainless steels, yes, but not tool steels.
