    Just curious, why do you aim for 33-34 ppt instead of 35?

    • @ReefBuildersVideo
      @ReefBuildersVideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      That's an excellent question! I do 35ppt on my main tank which has auto top off but since this tank tends to evaporate quite fast, having it at 33-34 gives me a little margin of error for it to go to 35-36 ppt when it evaporates. Yes I know I should, and will, get an ATO but I'm waiting for the perfect one, hopefully I'll find it in New Orleans next weekend.

    A fellow large-water-changer!! I love near-100% water changes... that's one of the biggest myths in the hobby that you should do small changes. Even my SPS tanks love them.

    • @mnelson10000
      @mnelson10000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I need to get my modified fluval edge tank going again. Looks similar to your tank(I removed the top glass). Definitely noticed the dark substrate right off the bat and I might have to use that if I get it back up and running. Looks sharp. Tank looks good dude. Love the vids. Thanks for the inspiration! I reduced my lighting period significantly recently and that single handedly made my tank look nearly flawless all the time. I dunno. All tanks are different.

    • @ReefBuildersVideo
      @ReefBuildersVideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah dude, people have so much algae problems due simply to too much light, and/or too long. I always recommend that reefers with algae issues cut the intensity and/or duration in half, and slowly ratchet it back up.

    Hi there bro! I have also recently started this new hobby and am also keeping a nano reef tank holding about 50 liters of water. Tank has been running in for about 1 week or so now... i have a couple of damsels in there but have not added rocks yet. I have a fine sand as substrate. Just want to check if you have any good tips on when i should make my first water change? Should i do a 90% water change like what u did in this video even when i have livestocks in there? And should i add a small wave maker as i'm planning to have corals in the near future.
    Thank u!

    • @ReefBuildersVideo
      @ReefBuildersVideo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can do big water changes but MAKE SURE that your salinity and temperature as close to the old water when you replace it - fish will shock much more easily to changes in water chemistry than corals.

    Q1: Where can I find more about regionally specific species? I really like the idea of having multiple tanks with consistent livestock highlighting different regions of our planet.
    Q2: How much more filtration do you need if you added, say, two clownfish? What exactly would you add to the tank?

    • @ReefBuildersVideo

      Not sure about Q1 but a simple hang on power filter would definitely give you the extra filtration needed for a couple medium sized fishes.

      It's really dry here in Colorado, especially in the winter time. This thing takes probably around 3 quarts per week, I've since added an AutoAqua Smart ATO Micro feeding from a 12 gallon top off reservoir (2x tank volume) so now I only have to refill the top off vat like every two months.

    Curious, why don't you test the water salinity before putting it into the tank?

    • @ReefBuildersVideo

      Oh I did, I didn't include that part but I'm a stickler for always measuring salinity.
