  • The work which you can see in this video is part of the project to restore Fan Bay Deep Shelter, a Second World War underground tunnel complex that was built between 1940 and 1941.
    The tunnels provided shelter and accomodation for the adjacent gun battery, a key defence position during the war.
    The tunnels were not needed after the war and were sealed as part of a programme to clear eyesores around the coast. All three of the tunnel entrances were covered in soil.
    The National Trust is now removing the soil and rubble to reveal the entrances, this will also allow the chalk grassland plants to re-colonise the areas damaged by the infilling.
