Cut the crap: Portland's 'Big Pipe' system helps put a lid on big sewage overflows

- Portland saw enough rain this week that Portland's combined wastewater system did reach its limit and overflow into the Willamette River. But believe or not, overflows are not nearly as common as they were before the 1990s.

The graphics were great.
Besides disconnecting household downspouts from the system, other steps were taken to reduce the total amount deposited in it. Such as conservation and efficiencies (low flush toilets, etc.). Accomplishing the things we need to do with less water is easy if we think about and practice it.

In the 1940s the willamette river was won of the most polluted rivers in America at the time and it’s still not a healthy river
There's still radioactive material in the river coming from Hanford nuclear reactor in WA.
yeah and there you go, a big pipe accomplishes very little other than to add tremendously to sewer costs. I began swimming in the Willamette in the 60s and played around and 'in' those massive overflow pipes, when there were overflows the natural flow of the river cleared it within a couple hours; there has 'never' been a report of 'any' human being being injured or made sick from any overflow -- ever.
so what's the point of such a pipe and cost? Feel good for environmentalists? Had 'nothing' to do with injury to human beings and had nothing to do with ensuring the river 'looking' cleaner, city council at the time of the pipe construction put up much opposition but EPA overruled it as EPA is made up of the hardcore environmental wonks that 'must' justify their positions by continually looking for any and all that they see degrades their faux religion -- the church of environmentalism...
Yea I'm from thr SE US, people tryna get me to go in the Willamette and I refuse. Not that SE ain't got its share of dirty rivers but I do know what a clean one be like 😂

If a individual put sewer in the river you would face fines but the epa doesn’t do anything to the city of Portland
