    I have a fun fact: Vincent Grey, the young man who shot Malcolm at the beginning of the movie, is played by Donnie Walhberg of “ New Kids on the Block” and “Blue Bloods” fame. He went through a lot of emotional and physical changes while preparing for the roll, including starvation.

    I could be wrong, but I thought it was cold in the cellar because Vincent was in the house and he would have ghosts in his presence, like Cole does.

    • @travistaylor4962

    This was up against _The Green Mile_ at the Oscars that year, I vaguely recall some cute exchange between Haley and Michael Duncan. I loved the relationship between Cole and Malcolm, one of my favorite scenes is when Cole asks Malcolm to sit with him until he falls asleep because it shows just how much he trusts the doctor at that point.

    The color red, is the string that ties the movie together. Whenever you see red, the doorknob, cole's sweater on the staircase, cole's tent, the mother's dress who kept her child sick. All through the movie. It is subtle, but always there. It's the warning that ghost's are near.

    That kid, Haley Joel Osment, is also in "The Boys" as an adult, playing "Mesmer" who was himself a child actor. You've reacted to those, so you've seen him.

    Anna feeling the cold in the cellar was merely foreshadowing of future events. She saw and spoke to Vincent. What I wonder about is all the tangible things that Malcolm handled and physically changed - writing notes, moving books to do his research, listening to the Vincent session tape - will Anna later see these when she eventually cleans out the cellar and recognize their significance?

    When Anna goes down to the cellar to get wine the first clue is that she flips the light on and it slowly gets brighter and brighter. That is M Night's clue to us that something is going to be revealed. While she's downstairs she gets a chill and then she looks around, frightened.
    She hurries back upstairs and she and Malcolm remark that it's cold and they put on warmer clothing, indicating that it's just chilly in the house. But when they go upstairs and discover Vincent he looks at Anna and says, "do you know why you're afraid when you're alone?" This startles her as she was just downstairs and alone and frightened. She shakes her head no, to which his response is, "I do"
    Of course, we later learn that he sees ghosts, dead people, and that's why he's afraid.
    There's no indication that there was ever a ghost in the basement. But Anna's moment of fear is an opportunity for us to learn more about Vincent.

  • @Wawagirl17
    @Wawagirl17 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    28:18 The coldness in the air with Malcolm's ghost *absolutely does* connect. You see his wife shiver in the shower when he's watching her in the bathroom during the scene when he first notices her anti-depressant prescription bottle. She's constantly covering herself with blankets as he watches her sleep. And Cole also said that you feel cold when ghosts are upset, not just angry. Obviously Malcolm was upset every time he entered a room and Anna wouldn't speak to him. Also the ghosts "only see what they want to see" and we're primarily seeing the film from Malcolm's perspective (except for a few scenes where we see the ghosts alongside Cole), so it wouldn't be as glaringly obvious to the audience how cold it was in their house until Malcolm realizes the truth in the end.
    And the reason it was cold in the basement in the very beginning while Anna was getting the wine is because Vincent was likely already in the house, and the ghosts would follow Vincent around, just like Cole.

    The ghosts in this movie are known as lost souls,those who have no idea that they are dead and go about their day leading to their death and then dissapere only to redo it over again in a constaint loop. The beautiful thing about this movie is that both Malcome and Cole had to help each other to be able to move on as it were. Malcome helped him with the ghosts and in turn Cole helped him talk to his wife in the end. Toni is an amazing actress in everything she does and the part in the car makes me cry everytime. M.Night is so good at his twists and the build up to it as well and this is by far my favorite of his movies. This movie was actually his first movie that he directed and wrote as well. Vicent was alive when he shot Malcome,he shot himself after doing so,the cold in the celler was a it's usualy cold in places like that and b it's because Vincent was there so most likely a ghost followed him there as well or ya maybe someone died there ya never know.
    The coldness of a room doesn't work that way like in the movie at least it wasn't like that for me. I know how Cole feels cause I went through it when I was his age too,different ghosts but same idea.

    There wasn't a sequel, but there was a TV series, "Ghost Whisperer," in which Jennifer Love Hewitt played a woman with the same power as Cole. It gives you an idea of what Cole's life might be like when he grows up.

    Being shot by a single regular bullet in the belly is extremely painful, *but* not usually fatal, which is why Shyamalan went for that option. It was entirely plausible that by the next fall he had recovered.

  • @captaindestruction9332
    @captaindestruction9332 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The part were the wife goes down to the cellar is creepy after you put everything together. Remember Vincent was at the time probably waiting upstairs after he had broken in, and since hes like Cole he probably had ghosts following him. So the cellar being cold was probably because a ghost was their waiting on Vincent.

    This is such a terrific movie and I *love* that you weren't spoiled by it beforehand. It makes the ending so much more emotional. I know he wasn't front and center the entire time, but for me it may be Bruce Willis' best overall performance because of the amount of emotions he gave without really having much dialogue with anyone except the little boy. We all felt how angry he was, how scared he was, how shocked he was, and then even how at peace he was. It was a rollercoaster and the reveal at the end was one of the best moments in cinema.

    The first time I saw it I was suspicious when Malcolm's wife didn't speak with him at the dinner and when the mom wasn't speaking to him when Cole came in from school. But then I decided that this was just going to be the way the director is telling the story and accepted it. After that, I didn't really notice it. It's that magical movie thing called the willing suspension of disbelief. LOL,
    It's like when Superman flies we all buy into it even though we know better.
    I'm glad I didn't figure it out and was as vulnerable to the twist as so many others.

  • @malagastehlaate230
    @malagastehlaate230 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The first time it was amazing... I was kinda like what? But I think I had a suspicion at some point... but then dismissed it. But having seen it now multiple times I still love it. Wonderful acting. I think about it often... and my thoughts are that Cole probably has something about him where the spirits can somehow tell that he sees them. I imagine that they are drawn to him perhaps that his spirit itself gives off some sort of beacon to them ... or energy that attracts them to him. But someone like that could do a lot to help others... but at the same time... I also get him being upset and not wanting his mom to know about it as he knows others think he's "crazy" different and a "freak" because of things he says ... or hears from these spirits... like when he's playing with the soldiers and speaking in Latin... that has to be "weird" to other kids... none of them are going to know latin... and Cole likely has no idea about it... you wonder if he just understands what they are saying to him even though it's not in English... ? Dunno. But I find it an interesting concept.
    I should like to think that my parents are happy together somewhere... sometimes I feel they visit me. But who really knows. Is that wishful thinking on my part or is it true? Guess we'll all find out when our time comes.

    I’ve seen this many times but the first was in the theater! The entire theater gasped at the big reveal! I didn’t notice until years after it came out that Vincent (the shooter) was played by Donnie Wahlberg who is a founding member of New Kids on the Block and stars in the tv show Blue Bloods! The dead girl came to Cole to save her little sister because their mom or stepmom (I’ve heard both) was poisoning her too! Donnie Wahlberg said in an interview that he lost a lot of weight for the role! Another movie with a big twist that I love is called The Others starring Nicole Kidman! This one is also creepy! And another of my favorites with Hayley Joel Osment is called Second Hand Lions! It’s a different type of movie (not scary)!

    The cold in the opening scene could have been a random ghost in their house, but since Cole is being visited and followed by ghosts from far away, it would make sense that Vincent is also followed by ghosts. So maybe it was a ghost that was following Vincent around.

    Regarding the young girl who was poisoned... there is a... I'm not even sure what to call it, a mental condition? A behavior that is not common, but does get repeated by individuals with no connection to each other. Basically it's when a mother(most often at least) gets addicted to having a sick child. It could be because they like being utterly depended on and needed, or they like the sympathy and/or praise they receive from others for being such a devoted parent in such a sad situation. Which is what I think this mom was craving... wearing bright red at your daughters funeral? This woman likes being the center of attention. Sometimes it starts by the child actually getting sick, and the mother acts to keep them that way if they start to recover, the child's death is normally not intentional. Not an excuse, it's still cold blooded murder, as I don't think it indicates any mercy or caring, more that whatever the mother is getting out of the situation depends on the child being a sick dependent rather than dead. I don't know if you caught it or not, but at the funeral you can hear some people in the crowed talking about the younger sister starting to show signs of illness... mother was moving on to her next victim. She didn't learn a damn thing, and didn't regret what she had done enough to not do it again... maybe justified it in her own mind by telling herself she would be more careful, but she was still willing to risk it to play the role of martyred mother.

    I feel like I'm the only one who guessed the twist early on. I mean with the gut shot dead centre which is sure fatal wound and we never see him recovering and he never interacts with people apart from the boy who can see ghosts, I felt it was obvious.

    can you react to ‘Eastern Promises’? Fantastic movie from David Cronenberg, Viggo Mortensen has the leading role and also got nominated for his role. It’s about Russian maffia but it’s not like a normal hollywood movie if you know what I mean

    I thought it would be a movie react but it's just a few scenes very briefily. 2 seconds and jumping ahead is the wrost possible way of editing this type of video. Not worth.
