hello Bruce,the tunnel you found at 3.45 used to go bellow the yard.as children growing up on asfordby hill with dad working at holwell we would walk down to the valley,round the resevoir over the bridge then go through that tunnel onto the road...near where the road into the works is now,near the old weigh bridge to meet dad coming out of work...we were with mum of course as we were young.we were taken up to the end of south street as children at asfordby hill school to watch the foundry chimneys being blown up in the 60s.i too went to work at holwell...as did a lot of sons following their dads but sadly it too is now due to close very soon.
Ahh! Well it's one of my longer term projects at the moment but I wished to explore the branches of the iron works and iron ore mining operations around Melton Mowbray. I do have a good book or two which I can point you in the direction of if required.
