It was known that these shows usually used playback. Probably used the original because that's what they practiced with instead of recording a studio live version.
It’s a TV show, they are always lip syncing in these shows, especially in the 80s and 90s and it is no secret. The „scandal“ was because they didn’t sang on the recordings. It’s obvious anyway when you hear the guys talking. Rob had this very thick bavarian/german accent that was all of a sudden completely gone and switched into perfect american english with an east coast accent when he allegedly sang. It was so obvious that it couldn’t be him.
In hindsight it may be obvious, but an accent when you speak, doesn't have to mean that you van hear that when you're singing. For excample Marti Pellow from Wet Wet Wet😉
Better yet why have a female singer there who obviously wasn’t their original backup singer. Nobody thought anything of it back then. And she missed her cues so many times
