This song reminds me of a time when I was battling trauma. As an SA survivor, I didn’t have the strength or courage to leave my four walls and face my friends and family. I felt shame, and it seemed like I was a target for judgment. One afternoon, while driving home, I heard this song and the lyrics 'You know that if you hide, it doesn't go away' snapped me out of the lethargy I had fallen into. I realized that by running away, staying silent, and denying the trauma and abuse, it doesn’t disappear; it only grows as we feed it with our fears and shame. I decided to confront that person because only then could my pain disappear if he is where he belongs - in hell and behind bars. I confronted him, and by doing so, I believe I saved many innocent people from ever coming into contact with him and potentially becoming victims. Something I find interesting about this song is that for the most part, the voice in the song is pretty monotone, the voice is very flat until it hits to the chorus. I keep feeling as though this song is about a predator towards its prey (or a mix of both ways around) and that being said, a metaphor on its own. Predator could be anything and same with prey (not literal predator and prey). When it comes to death, the line “just know that if you hide, it doesn’t go away” makes sense. As well as “forgiving who you are, for what you stand to gain” being a poetic harsh reality about the relationship between predator and prey. It makes me feel like the villain but at the same time the victim.
The lyrics are truly a piece of art because their meaning is different for everyone. From my perspective, the lyrics can be about two things: the end of days or unrepentant sinners. The End of Days meaning that the end is coming, and everyone is denying that it is. But even if they look into the future, even if they put on a brave face, they shouldn't be surprized it'll happen in the end. As for unrepentant sinners, the song not only gives heavy imagry of struggling to put on an act. Wrinkles from forcing emotion, exhausting oneself to put on an act, laughing at the bad and denying it is so. But also, near the end, gives biblical symbolism of angels smiting the wicked (policemen and guns), and bringing a stone to a bridge. Bridges are usually built above bodies of water, usually rivers. In the Bible, it says it's "better to wrap a stone around your neck and jump into the river than causing one of these little ones to fall." Basically, it means that if you corrupt the innocent, it's better to commit sepuku than face whatever Earthly Hell God has planned for you.
Except the meaning isn't different for everyone. MGMT was very clear about what they wrote the song about, and spoiler alert, the policemen are the furthest thing from angels.

Something I find interesting about this song is that for the most part, the voice in the song is pretty monotone, the voice is very flat until it hits to the chorus. It kinda makes me think of someone suppressing emotions with a poker face and then that poker face finally breaks when the voice starts to go higher/lower when they sing the chorus ("just know that if you hide..." this general part of the song).

I found this because I was searching for another video but this song was one of the common searches so I clicked it out of curiosity

I keep feeling as though this song is about a predator towards its prey (or a mix of both ways around) and that being said, a metaphor on its own. Predator could be anything and same with prey (not literal predator and prey). When it comes to death, the line “just know that if you hide, it doesn’t go away” makes sense. As well as “forgiving who you are, for what you stand to gain” being a poetic harsh reality about the relationship between predator and prey. It makes me feel like the villain but at the same time the victim.

The lyrics are truly a piece of art because their meaning is different for everyone. From my perspective, the lyrics can be about two things: the end of days or unrepentant sinners.
The End of Days meaning that the end is coming, and everyone is denying that it is. But even if they look into the future, even if they put on a brave face, they shouldn't be surprized it'll happen in the end.
As for unrepentant sinners, the song not only gives heavy imagry of struggling to put on an act. Wrinkles from forcing emotion, exhausting oneself to put on an act, laughing at the bad and denying it is so. But also, near the end, gives biblical symbolism of angels smiting the wicked (policemen and guns), and bringing a stone to a bridge. Bridges are usually built above bodies of water, usually rivers. In the Bible, it says it's "better to wrap a stone around your neck and jump into the river than causing one of these little ones to fall." Basically, it means that if you corrupt the innocent, it's better to commit sepuku than face whatever Earthly Hell God has planned for you.
Except the meaning isn't different for everyone. MGMT was very clear about what they wrote the song about, and spoiler alert, the policemen are the furthest thing from angels.
