48:50 the awesome thing about the simulation in this sequel is that, not only accidents but the mini-"event" that is called "Traffic Jam" also matters. I had a non-traffic lighted intersection in the very entrance to my town, and it lead to a true traffic jam as a single car responsible got "stuck" inside the intersection itself, in the middle, due to the lane he tried to turn into, was blocked by another truck, which ofc lead to every other lane also being blocked in said intersection. Just like it happens irl. Adding a traffic light eventually cleared it up, as it prevents "colliding" lanes from blocking each other the same way. Just very cool that the game has a dedicated "traffic jam" event detection, that isnt just some arbitrary "very high traffic density" trigger, but actually triggers when a car gets specifically stuck in an intersection.
Love how you have turned into an absolute powerhouse of a content creator Phil. Great work on the last few videos. Your information is invaluable to the player base! Look forward to seeing more from CS:2.
100% agree. I played for 2.5 hours last night, going through the game tutorial initially. I played CS1 on xbox and am far removed from my days playing Sim City on PC. I was struggling with the mouse/keyboard controls (and using a mousepad rathertan a free movement mouse) and the tutorial seems to assume you already know most of them. Can't wait to try the landscaping/terrain tools now...maybe I won't make such a mess of things.

The fact that the vanilla game has such an insane level of detail is so exciting! It won't be like CS1 where the cities couldn't keep up with the gameplay, and any real challenge or story had to be made up in your head
I think the most important thing to learn in CS2 is even if we now have 6 square on each side of the roads does not means we have to zone all of them. Aquiring a sense of scale is very important in this game and you are absolutely right to put it in perspective with real life grid comparaison. In a lot of videos I saw people do giant grid for their tiny rural village, that's ridiculous.
Very interesting to see someone with the same profile icon ;) And I agree, coming from CS1, you really have to adjust your way of thinking on the scale of things. The housing is fine on smaller grids, but many ploppables are absolutely huge compared with their CS1 counterparts. That shouldn't be a reason to build your grid to accommodate them though: Especially with the building addons, we should really be more prepared to switch existing things around a lot more or even demolish stuff to make room, including roads. I like that, because the city will look less artificial afterwards!

Most straight forward guide ive seen. Ive been overthinking my builds which is why i don't think they usually look good. The way you described how to use the different tools was very helpful.
So glad I found your channel! I've only just started playing this game and your tutorials are fantastic. Really well-edited, tons of useful information, presented in a way that's easy to follow but much more in-depth than a lot of other more surface-level videos. Thank you so much for making and sharing these!
Damn man, you are so good at explaining all of the mechanics and make it look so easy. Great job and cant wait to see the cities you will build in CS2!
I had a lot of trouble staring on the first game since I had no idea what I was doing, followed your beginners guide on that for a few episodes and saw the way you do things make so much more sense than the anarchy I had for a city Really looking forward to this series to learn the little details Skylines 2 adds in, thank you for making these they truly help!
With so many people harping on what's currently not quite right with the new game, I'm relieved and pleased to hear your "can do" voice applied to it. I know you also have your criticisms, and I agree with those I've heard from other videos, but it's so good to just hear "OK, we're going to BUILD SOMETHING". Thank you for everything you have done, are doing, and plan to do, Phil.
It is so much fun seeing a new city take shape under your control. I would be interested to know what was the actual play time to get to this point vs the 1 hourish runtime of the video. It would definitely help on these tutorial videos since it seems like there is some but not too much time lapse.
assuming we start the game on the same date for every map, i got to october 2023 within a few hours like 4 or 5 and i'm pausing quite a lot but also using fast speed sometime... and in the videos Phil seems to don't pause as much and build with the Normal speed and reached august 2023 so my guess is most likely a couple hours, not accounting for the great timelapse at the end and the incredibly smooth editing which deserve praise i must say
I normally played settlement sims and could never really get into city builders because they are just too overwhelming, unless they were super simplified like old school Pharoah. This guide helped a lot to get me in a better direction of thinking about the bigger city.
The grids being slightly broken ended up being a good thing for me. In CS1 I'd just build grid after grid after grid with little variation. In this game, seeing the messed up zones made me start using the continuous tool, building curved roads. It makes the cities look more unique than the extended battery cities I was building.
Nice to see you extending your City building tutorials for Cities: Skylines II. I learnt a lot from your previous series in the first game and helped me understand how to better layout a city :)
What a great tutorial! I loaded up my game, followed along with you, and learned a whole lot more than I would have done by just poking around myself! I can't wait to expand on this city.
This is awesome - I played C:S 1 for a long time and was a fairly proficient/advanced player. I assumed it would be a simple transition. While the in game tutorials are helpful, this is such a fantastic explanation to the new tools especially and clarifies the big differences. Been a fan/subscriber for a while now and this was amazing! Thanks for the always fabulous content
Wow! What a fantasitic video. Your ability to explain things so clearly and thoroughly, great use of a large vocabulary, and video-making skills are all very imrpessive. Well done good sir! Many thanks for making this video. I'm new to Cities Skylines and just started my first city. I think I'll start a new city with the knowledge I gained from this video and hopefully have a much better looking and functioning city.
Extremely usefull and well structured tutorial. Learned more here than in my first hour in game. Soooo much I didn't know I can do, or how it should be done. Thank you.
This is an EXCELLENT tutorial! I have always had issues with the terrain tool. You made it really easy to understand. There's a lot in this video and I will be coming back to it often. The game is immense and has basic tutorials. I fell so much more confident playing it now. THANK YOU! One tutorial that would nice to see is farming. Especially how important livestock is.
I have an idea for the broken grid on the roads that are curved and which are not always 90 degrees angled, where it's impossible to zone or build anything. What if there was an option just like the 'landfill area and districts creating tool' for every house and if there is a broken grid near any house, you use its polygon tool to create or extend existing lawns or some area of the house to fill in the Imperfections of your cities. Assets can spawn in those extended areas or you can plop objects yourself If you want to. I would love your thoughts on this!
I think it would be awesome if they added graphic tablet support to CS2 for terraforming. Being able to control the strength of the brushes with stylus pressure would make the whole process so much easier.
The game looks great, the new features and gameplay are a builders dream with a whole new level of complexity to keep things interesting. Unfortunately the spec requirement exceeds my PC and I cannot justify upgrading my hardware for just one game. Looking forward to seeing what you can build and how the game develops. Meanwhile I will keep playing City Skylines 1.
@@ethand3978 Not in this case. Check out CPPs benchmark video. One thing I've noticed about North American Cities, is that Western, NA cities are usually split in half between a railroad going through the downtown, while Eastern NA cities aren't. Exception for Western cities being Port cities that were established before the Railroad was built.
I played CS1 and got to 890,000 population and then ran into "cannot build any more of this type" i.e. ROADS. I got so bummed after watching my city descend to 740,000 population. Now that CS2 is out I will get it and try again. Thank you for your cool, calm and collected tutorial. Very easy to understand though I may have to watch it a couple of times to catch all the details. 👍
So glad I didn't pre-order. Optimization is horrible, my friend had 10fps on low settings in a town with only 8k population. (His pc is above recommended specs) Gonna wait till it's fixed, or goes on sale.
for me this game in that state it's not worht it. I have Ryzen 7800X3D and RTX 4090 and there is 25 fps. Optimalization is mess. Game looks like its released 10 years ago. I lost money, I will try to refund. Disaster.
One really helpful thing thats been found is if people are complaining of high rent build smaller low density resi houses. Dont zone a huge block with paint tool use marquee to make like 2x3 and 3x3 houses
Game is unplayable at the moment. Like I have a i7 , 16GB RAM, GFORCE RTX 3050 AND IT RUNS LIKE SHIT. Even with the settings they provided to optimize the gameplay. If you don't own an amazing $3000+ system you're not gonna enjoy the state this game is in.
I’ve only ever played Cities on console so I’ve never had the chance to get deep into it. I really enjoy watching you play because you play like I would if I were way smarter and better at the game. Much love. Biffa told me to be nice to other creators so here I am
my brain is always rush rush build build and I'm almost never happy with my results. This is the way I played CS1. Seeing the demand meters spike and the pop up bubbles of citizens gives me anxiety and can be overwhelming. Time to take it down a notch, relax, and enjoy it and your video helps me see that it's not only possible, it's the way it should be. Very concise and informative video I'm definitely subscribing.
I can’t wait to come back to this video. I’ve finally gotten around to Mechwarrior 5, so I’m a little preoccupied with giant stompy war machines, but I know I’ll need to find something quieter as the winter sets in.
I love this! I've been playing for a few weeks now and found this so helpful. I will say, I have a city of 30,000 people and i still haven't placed waste management. All the garbage get's exported and it never builds up. So you don't HAVE to have a landfill when you start the game :)
Extremely helpful video, even though I've got plenty of CS1 time under my belt this contains just so many vital bits of information, from high-level concepts to tiny useful tips, and everything in between. Just a great way to learn what's different and how to approach it.
Never played the first city skylines. Haven't really played any city planning game in a long while. Thank you for this video helping me get my feet wet. Very helpful info. 👍
I bought City Skylines over the Thanksgiving holiday and ... I am not the most successful city-planner, it seems. This is the first city builder I have played since SimCity 2000. Thanks for the in depth tutorial. I kept mentally exclaiming "that is how terraforming works!", "you can relocate buildings?" and "you can rotate buildings?" I think I am going to rewatch this later this week and take notes. Greatly appreciate it (from someone very new to this game genre). I also see you have a performance optimization video, so I am going to need to watch that too. EDIT: The starting grid info was very useful too as I didn't know how wide apart to set my roads, etc.
Should've definitely watched this before starting my first city. You really have to approach the game differently compared to Cities Skylines 1 and I'm probably just gonna start from scratch at this point
Just loaded up Cities 2… and wow. I’m blown away immediately. Coming in late to CS1 I felt overwhelmed by the DLC so hopping in Vanilla feels surreal. This game is going to sink my time like very few games have
One little super awesome detail i caught, continue or Restart tutorials! Dude why isnt that the norm. Hate being into a complicated game, going through most of the tutorials and deciding i want to start over and either miss some of the stuff or i have to do it all over again and click next every step.
I know you made a new one of these and I'll check that out. but before I do let me thank you for this one and for all your efforts. GREAT videos. you're extremely clear, very efficient, and very listenable. awesome work
You're quite an accomplished player and so thorough that I was intimidated. However, I'll try and go back a few times and take notes. If I had 20% of your talent, I'd be satisfied.
couple of things on utilities. it is always best to import water and sewage, you will save 33% of cost vs maintenance. This is easy to implement by spamming 6 wind generators down to get enough xp to be level 2, then buy four tiles over on an edge, just build your city on the edge, create your own outside connections for roads, trains, power, ect. It it actually much more enjoyable to build this way tbh. Power, coal and geothermal are profitable, just import power till you unlock them. you can easily sustain about any city financially with coal power stations by selling the power to the outside you cannot make wind profitable no matter how hard you try. you can turn a small profit through government subsides, but they are a net loss selling to the outside. it however is a net profit using wind instead of importing, just do one or the other, do not build a transformer if you go wind or your profit is gone due to it's maintenance
For anyone out there (don’t know if it was put out already). Dedicated turning lanes is somewhat doable with the asymmetrical roads for the two lanes and four lanes. There’s at least one lane dedicated to turning only when mixed with small and medium roads. Also hope they grinding gears to get performance under control. Otherwise very enjoyable game.
I love your content man, your first beginners tutorial really helped me understand how the first cities skylines worked, its been a long while since I last touched the game and now with the second game being out now, I just remember the joy of understanding the game through your series and I've been inspired to play again.
I don't know if you'll ever see this comment but it's been 5 minutes of the video and I already do want to know how civil engineering and city planning works in real life and more information about these diciplines, thanks to your profound knowledge and detailed commentary. Maybe it's because the way we can do in the game, i don't know. I subbed for more content like this.
Great guide! Following along helped me recalibrate my pace of city expansion. I was fixated on the zoning demand meters at the expense of actual planning. No wonder every city I've started in this game has devolved into single family home hell
Great learning experience thanks. I'm following along with your design and having a lot of fun with concepts I had missed when playing solo. One catch is when you refer to the "i" button. If you want to remove the overlay after selecting a new building or utility, you can either click once on the 'I' logo at the top left, but simply clicking the 'i' button on your keyboard does NOT work (it only brings up the overlay menu, but doesn't turn it off!). If you prefer to use the keyboard shortcut to remove the overlay, you have to press 'i' on your keyboard, then press the ESCAPE key! Not sure if a patch changed this or if this was like this when you recorded the video 6 months ago.
man i mainly play cities skylines like a village simulator with very minimal pop but damn the improved road tools made a ton of difference. i cant believe with just improving the road aspect the amount of modification and customizability it brought is mindblowing. although its still doable with cs1 with its abundant mods and features, its still very from what i can do with cs2 now.
Just gotta say thank you so much for this beginner's guide! I never had a problem learning SimCity or CS1 -- but CS2 has been kicking my tail for some reason. I'm following along with this video series ... took me three hours to build through episode 1. Am I slow? ;) I do want to offer one comment, however. The rock star's mansion makes aesthetic sense where you placed it, but half of its influence in terms of enhancing well-being is lost in the river. I went off-script and placed it in a block across the street from the cemetery (quieter neighborhood) and just a block away from the commercial zones. I then landscaped trees around it for privacy. This way 100% of the asset's well-being influence is felt by the cims living around the mansion. Thanks again for the awesome instructional video!
Holy Majoly, thank you for this tutorial and explaining all of the tools. I tried playing Cities Skyline but was never able to get into it because I was already playing other games like Satisfactory and couldnt get myself driven to push all the buttons and learn it. This is a huge help!

Your roadmap for this series is impressive! I'm so looking forward to playing in about 45 minutes or so!
Most straight forward guide ive seen. Ive been overthinking my builds which is why i don't think they usually look good. The way you described how to use the different tools was very helpful.
I’m really hoping we get a story element to these like Clearwater and verde beach
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
I had a lot of trouble staring on the first game since I had no idea what I was doing, followed your beginners guide on that for a few episodes and saw the way you do things make so much more sense than the anarchy I had for a city
Really looking forward to this series to learn the little details Skylines 2 adds in, thank you for making these they truly help!
I’ve never played city skylines but watching this is bringing out my inner child opening up roller coaster tycoon for the first time
Love what you are doing with the layout of the grids. I like that the trees take time to grow it brings a realistic feel to the game.
The best beginner tutorial for those who want to learn how to build perfect. Really professional!
Extremely usefull and well structured tutorial. Learned more here than in my first hour in game. Soooo much I didn't know I can do, or how it should be done. Thank you.
"You can't let perfect be the enemy of good." I needed to hear that. Not just for this but in other creative things I'm trying to do. Thank you.
Thank you SO much for this. It’s been really helpful to follow along and learn the tools with this. I would’ve been so lost without this tutorial.
Too bad my 6 years old laptop with 1060 would melt if I open this game :(
Try using Lossless Scaling. It can make miracles with older computers.
I never thought of that, but that's a fantastic idea.
I have no intention of buying this game but you can bet your bottom dollar I'm going to be watching every installment of this series.
Used this to help me start yesterday and I can’t thank you enough. If I didn’t see this my city would be in ruin
Spec requirements normally are always a overshoot. I’m sure it will be fine.
@@ethand3978there’s benchmark tests and it certainly is not fine unfortunately
@@ethand3978 Not in this case. Check out CPPs benchmark video. The game will not be playable until numerous optimization patches come in, for a massive chunk of the playerbase. unplayable is < 40-50 fps average in my definition but personally I wouldn't bother with it unless it hits 100+ on a 3070 at 1080p.
@ethand3978 have you seen some peoples footage on a 3060. It struggles the game is not ready yet.
@@jadawngriffis3745 Turn off vsync, disable volumetrics and disable depth of field and also make sure your playing at 1080p, this will significantly boost your frames
One thing I've noticed about North American Cities, is that Western, NA cities are usually split in half between a railroad going through the downtown, while Eastern NA cities aren't. Exception for Western cities being Port cities that were established before the Railroad was built.
Love your work City Planner!
100k pop, doing decent 40 fps. Little below recommend specs. On medium. Feels bad man
My fiancée and I call you “city dad” cuz your vibe is so welcoming and informative, more importantly fun! Thanks for posting your videos ❤
for me this game in that state it's not worht it.
Step one: Uninstall.
It’s okay it will get better with time just like the first one
Imagine building a game that big and complex without bugs. No developer team can handle such thing
The amount of people who complain about performance cause they didn't read that their computers can't power this game is so funny
@@AcerTheRaccoon hilarious that a game that looks this trash, can't run on most PCs?
He’s not going to Uninstall, he’s getting paid
Your CS1 videos were always great. Your CS2 videos, are that much more helpful, especially in these early days. Thank you so much for all your work!
I'm a bit late here, but this is such a professional guide. If I'd paid for it, I wouldn't have been disappointed.
my brain is always rush rush build build and I'm almost never happy with my results.
It is very nice to be able to finally hear you talk about things unrestricted or uncensored!
18:24 - The "I" button tip is pure gold. I had no idea you could remove those blinding UI overlays in utility modes!!!!!
I can't believe I listen to this from beginning to the end. It's such a good video, clear and concise.
Extremely helpful video, even though I've got plenty of CS1 time under my belt this contains just so many vital bits of information, from high-level concepts to tiny useful tips, and everything in between. Just a great way to learn what's different and how to approach it.
Without your content I don’t think I would enjoy this game nearly as much.
I learned more about this game in 15 minutes than I did fitzing for 6 hours with the in-game tutorial. Thanks!
Love that cities skylines took all the popular mods that were created and added it to the game as default
Should've definitely watched this before starting my first city. You really have to approach the game differently compared to Cities Skylines 1 and I'm probably just gonna start from scratch at this point
Great beginner tutorial for CS2, and I say this as a once avid player of CS1. Quick and informative. Couldn’t have done it better myself.
woah i shouldve watched this video three days ago. 12 minutes in and this guy explains half of the issues i had
Just loaded up Cities 2… and wow. I’m blown away immediately. Coming in late to CS1 I felt overwhelmed by the DLC so hopping in Vanilla feels surreal. This game is going to sink my time like very few games have
i tried my hands at the game for two totally burnt, now i have a better understanding, thank you so much
One little super awesome detail i caught, continue or Restart tutorials!
I watched your first ultimate beginner guide a long time ago and I learn SO MUCH just from that video alone
couple of things on utilities. it is always best to import water and sewage, you will save 33% of cost vs maintenance.
This is easy to implement by spamming 6 wind generators down to get enough xp to be level 2, then buy four tiles over on an edge, just build your city on the edge, create your own outside connections for roads, trains, power, ect. It it actually much more enjoyable to build this way tbh.
Power, coal and geothermal are profitable, just import power till you unlock them.
you can easily sustain about any city financially with coal power stations by selling the power to the outside
you cannot make wind profitable no matter how hard you try. you can turn a small profit through government subsides, but they are a net loss selling to the outside.
it however is a net profit using wind instead of importing, just do one or the other, do not build a transformer if you go wind or your profit is gone due to it's maintenance
Thank you for posting this when the game's actually out and not a month ago like so many other people did.
Friggin strategy guides for time travelers.
Just gotta say thank you so much for this beginner's guide! I never had a problem learning SimCity or CS1 -- but CS2 has been kicking my tail for some reason. I'm following along with this video series ... took me three hours to build through episode 1. Am I slow? ;)
I do want to offer one comment, however.
I learned more about city grids in 5 minutes than my entity of playing CS, now I understand where I went wrong with starter city in CS2. Awesome channel :D
I’m so glad to be able to start this series from the beginning. I’m still playing catch up on the Verde Beach playlist
I dont think my handy dandy laptop will handle CS2 so i'll be living vicariously thru this acct!!
I love the subtle shade thrown at nimbyism in SF Bay Area! So accurate...
Man. The road tool snapping explanations just saved me. Thank you man.
