It was before The color purple, Eddie, the nun movie with young Lauren Hill and all of her 2nd wave of movies but after her 1st wave of movies... jumping Back Flash, Burgerlar Ghost...etc. back in the 80s there were only a few big names in comedy, Billy Crystal, Pryor, Murphy Seinfeld, Dice, Louie Anderson, etc...
Whoppi's special was a Broadway production that HBO aired a year later. So since HBO didn't pay for it to be produce its not consider a HBO special.
