Lovely demonstration, Ben. It takes me right back to when I was a beginner in the '70s, lucky enough to have someone who'd played the 1960s London Folk/Blues circuit to show me the ropes. Listening to you is inspiring all over again because, just like him, you've got the vital thing that nobody can write down on paper as notes or tabs - fantastic feel and expression! 😎
What do you mean by its harder to hit the open D than not hit it? :) Great lessons just confused as how during the strum you're not playing the open D or if you're muting it? Thanks!

Are you strumming the G string with your finger while your thumb plays the E and A strings?
