Hey, i had a house fire back in october. Just want to thank you deeply for the information you provide. You helped me and my roommates get through this. Information on this kinda stuff can be limited, as it doesn’t happen to a lot of people. So thank you for working to help victims and make useful information like this public.
The laying out of the thought processes behind such decisions, and how and what mattered to each party has been really instructive for me, now in the packing-out phase , soon to be immersed in these decisions myself, thank you.
I also had an incident where the glassware was stored in a garage, there was a fire in the winter, it was must have hot fire, so the glasses expanded then contracted when it returned back to the minus -30C air. When we started washing them back at the shop, most of them shattered in the hot water.
The Mr. Clean magic eraser works on fire smoke damage... The RV trailer that i was renting a "room" out was burnt down, and my room was somewhat saved by the fire department they drowned most of my stuff with water. but i saved some of my things... a collection of Deadpool little figurines in a clear plastic Dome , a snap ring tool in its packaging clear plastic, and some other smoke damage items. i have tried to clean them with LA's total awesome and some vinegar, but they didn't really scratch the surface on cleaning the clear plastic, but the Mr. clean magic eraser had no problem at all and didn't have to really work it.
The best thing to do is remove the plant from the pot and remove all dirt then clean the pot. then rinse the roots thoroughly with water and wash all the stems and leaves of the plant to sure the no soot or contamination is left on the plant. Then repot the plant with good fresh potting soil. You want to do this asap so the plants arent sitting in the contaminants any longer than necessary. The give them a good fertilizer and this will give them the best chance of survival.
I once did a kitchen fire that was so hot that the glassware was literally stuck on the shelves of the cabinets, we did not able save anything from the kitchen
