    "Abstinence makes the heart grow fonder". Waiting until Christmas is a wonderful goal, but may I suggest that one way to get more mileage out of the same pen bodies is to substitute new nibs. That's a form of tinkering which I think great fun, especially when one is using less expensive pens and the risk of a mistake is not a costly one.

    • @gadgetstop321
      @gadgetstop321  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good idea. I have also considered getting some inexpensive #6 nibs and grinding my own architect and Naginata Togi nibs.

      I agree. I'm going to do that with a Pelikan 800, but their nib-sections are pretty pricey. I've just bought a custom AD and it has a JoWo section which should allow me to try other nibs. Also, I've made the rule that my collection stays at about 20. I'm saving my last 3 slots for very special pens I'll need time to find and/or save up for. Cheers :)

    Sailor Jentle Black ink cured a similar problem with my Stipula Etruria 1407. It was the 3rd ink I tried and it has worked the best as I do not have to prime the feed anymore. That experience has led me to experiment with all my inks and pens rather than match them color to color.

    Hi. This is the first video I’ve seen from you and I very much enjoyed it. I also am getting to the point that I can’t enjoy all my pens and I’m a teacher too so use them for correcting as well as writing for myself. I have trouble not using the ink fast enough and I’ve had ink dry up in a couple of pens. Can you do a video on how you store your pens and how many you keep inked up and the like. A couple of my dream pens are the Pelikan Souveran M600 and the Kaweco Liliput in copper - they’re on my wish list. I like your idea of not buying several pens throughout the year and waiting for Christmas and treating myself to a special pen! Thanks for the video!

    • @gadgetstop321
      @gadgetstop321  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're welcome Karla! Those are good ideas for videos. Until a few months ago, I only allowed myself to have two pens inked up at a time. Now, if I want to use a pen, I ink it up. I have about half my collection inked up right now. One of my pens has ink dried in it, but that is the fault of the pen and ink combo...they just didn't work well together. I like have lots of options when I'm choosing a pen for the day.

    I have a twsbi eco with a stun nib and it wrote okay the first time I inked it up. The pen is a demonstrator of course but it has an orange cap and end cap. I don’t know who started this but for some reason fountain pen users like matching the ink with the pen color. Usually the pilot iroshizuku line are my favorite inks but I bought an orange one called yu-yake, (it’s like a pumpkin orange) to match my twsbi, and now it bleeds more, feels rough, has skips and hard starts, but I’ve heard orange inks are problematic. So what I’ve done is I will mix 75% orange with 25% black and it still appears black. I use it in my metropolitan now and while the metropolitan is very smooth for its price, it feels just the tiniest bit rough with this black orange blend, so I agree wholeheartedly that the ink even from the same brand will make a difference in a pens overall performance.

    • @gadgetstop321
      @gadgetstop321  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Orange inks do have peculiar properties. I have used Colorverse Golden Record in several pens. In most pens it behaves just fine, but in one of my pens it gets crusty all over the nib and in my Kaweco Perkeo it hard starts and just doesn't hardly want to come out of the nib. I'm glad that I made most of my bad ink choices early in my fountain pen hobby, before I knew what a good writing experience was. Then I made some lucky ink choices (Pilot Iroshizuku) and learned what writing with a fountain pen should feel like. BTW I love your username!

    Great video - I love your voice. You guys in the US are so lucky to have stores such as JetPens and so much choice in your arts/stationery stores. I could spend days wandering round arts/crafts supplies stores (my bank balance wont thank you for it, but I can dream). I do have some fountain pens; none of any great monetary value, but I have a couple of Lamy's, which are very "juicy" pens. Basically, I have been a pen freak since I was a kid - stationery/art materials shops and bookshops can hold hours of fascination for me. Although I have these fountain pens, I don't use them that often, as the only pens I use each day are biros for one of my favourite hobbies, which are crosswords; however, the paper that they are printed on isn't suitable for fountain pen ink. Maybe I should dig out my pens, clean them up and get writing again. Thanks again.

      Thank you! I live very far from an actual stationery store. However, there are some local stores that have small stationery sections where I have spent many hours studying every pen, pencil, and notebook. I bought Noodler's 54th Massachusetts to go in it, as I love the color. This pen is writing more like a medium, which I am not happy with (have tried it on Tomoe River, Rhodia & Moleskine). Could it be the ink? What would you recommend for this pen/nib to get a finer line? I am wishing I bought the EF☹️ Thanks for any advice!

      It's Cathy and thanks for watching. I was kind of disappointed that I got my TWSBI Mini with a fine instead of an extra fine. But then I discovered that the ink I uses will affect how wide of a line it puts down. I haven't used any Noodler's inks, but considering how water resistant they are, I guess they really soak into the paper. I would recommend getting some ink samples, like Korax suggested - Kaweco would be a good brand to try. Another brand of inks that tend to be dry is Graf Von Faber-Castell.

    Another Great Video.
    You are much further into the hobby than me so I will ask for advice.
    I need a smooth, fine nib pen for my notes.
    Any suggestions?
    My favorite pens so far are my TWSBI eco stuby, my diplomat magnum medium, and my pilot Knight medium.
    Due to my enjoyment of smooth writers, I tend to get broader nubs, but I need something fine lined for my notes.
    The medium in pilot is about the best I have found so far for being fairly fine, without sacrificing smoothness.
    I should point out that I can't buy anything too expensive.
    My wife already thinks I am nuts for spending what I have spent.
    Under $60 is preferred under $100 is required. I don't want to sleep on the couch Too many nights. lol

      Thank you! The pens you have listed are my favorite smooth nibs. My TWSBI Mini with a fine nib is very smooth. The only other brand that I can think of that has a reputation for glassy smoothness is Faber-Castell, however, the only Faber-Castell I have used is an Ambition with an extra-fine nib, and extra-fine nibs are not smooth at all. I've heard that the mediums are really smooth, but European mediums tend to be pretty broad. I wish I could have been more help, but most of my experience is with fine and extra-fine nibs.

      Michael Reed I have an TWSBI Diamond 580 AL R Nickel Gray in EF, which is very smooth for an EF, when you write with an light hand. Much smoother than my EF that came with the Mini. The Kaweco Supra would also be an option, but I would recommend trying it in person. It is heavy at 45g, but very well balanced! I love it. My first M was a true M. My second M and the one for my mother where rather dry and very fine, more like EF/F, yet very smooth. I flexed them (intentionally too hard) so that they write more like a true medium. But at all times the last two where very flexy (not soft) and put a nice line down, when you pressed a bit. I know another person that got a B that writes like a fine. Depending on where you live it is probably a bit over the budget. It is a nice pen, but I can’t say that they always write so fine like the last two I got. A Supra is for sure a nice pen :) ...and you can swap the nib section very easily :) The Lamy 2000 (maybe used? because of it’s price) is also a great option. Nice pen! Nice nibs! I have two M and one EF. All write very nice. But be a little bit cautious with the M, the M is a nice and juicy M, which is very nice! But it might be too broad if you look for something fine. But I can highly recommend the M :) Very nice juicy nib.

      @@herrkeks8509 OK Great.
      If I recall correctly, the TWSBI Diamond is a number 6 size where my Eco and Go are smaller at a number 5. I assume the mini is a number 4 as well? Perhaps the different nib is why there is a difference in the feel. I will look into the diamond.
      I haven't looked at the Kaweco line other than the sport. I love brass. Does the Supra patina with age or is it coated to prevent that?
      I love the look of the flame torched finish of the Liliput as well. Over budget but cool.

    Have you considered teaching a class in fountain pen writing? I wish schools would bring back writing cursive long hand, and use fountain pens in public schools (like in Europe and in Asia). Starting in grammar school, kids could be given fountain pens to use, and taught essay, letter, and journal writing as an elective.
    My nephew, who just turned six, saw me writing in my journal. He hasn't stopped asking about the pen I was using (a Parker Duofold Centennial). At his age he wants to understand everything.
    I enjoyed your video. The topic of ink and pen pairing is complicated, and you made it simple to understand, without being too technical. Thank you!
    I want to see more women reviewing fountain pens, as it is a bit of a boys club, and that can be boring. Please, consider doing a video on women and fountain pens, because my instincts tell me it would be popular. It seems like an untapped subject on TH-cam.

    Since how long have you been using the fountain pen inks? When you look at your old journals, how are your inks holding up in terms of colors and lightfastness? I just came across this thing that texts written with inks are not forever, some fade away so quickly. So, does that mean no fountain pen for schools and making notes to be studied later, at least a student will need these texts to be readable for a year. And sometimes looking your old journals give so much of joy. Could you please make a video on this topic?

    • @gadgetstop321

      I have been using fountain pens for 5 years and I have not had any problems with ink fading. Some fountain pen inks may fade if a page of writing is left on direct sunlight for days, but under normal conditions it would take decades for the ink to fade, and it would not likely disappear completely. However, if you drop a page in water, some inks will wash away completely.
