The rumba flows through Jocelyn Balu's veins, like the beer over the counters of the pubs in Kinshasa. Two years after the Congolese rumba was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, Jocelyn Balu and his band take us on a journey through the Kinshasa fever of the 40s to 70s, the golden era of Congolese rumba, for the pleasure of our ears, but also for belly and hips.
Borumba reinterprets the greatest hits of that time from ‘Basi nionso tapale’ to the cult chorus of Wendo's 'Marie-Louise' and mixes them again with their origins, the traditional music of Congo. He pays tribute to these essential pioneers who made his cradle move.
The singer, composer and arranger Jocelyn Balu grew up in the prison district of Kinshasa. He began his career at the age of 6 as a soloist in a traditional Gospel choir. In 2006, at the age of only 19, he won the first Gospel Prize with the group Maisha. Five years ago, Jocelyn was part of the group Bakolo Music International with a number of old rumba pioneers, including Papa Bikunda who sang in Wendo's group in 1948.
De rumba stroomt door de aderen van Jocelyn Balu, zoals het bier over de toonbanken van de kroegen in Kinshasa. De zanger, componist en arrangeur Jocelyn Balu groeide op in de gevangeniswijk van Kinshasa. Hij begon zijn carrière op 6-jarige leeftijd als solist in een traditioneel Gospelkoor. In 2006, op slechts 19-jarige leeftijd, behaalde hij de eerste Gospelprijs met de groep Maisha. Vijf jaar geleden maakte Jocelyn deel uit van de groep Bakolo Music International met een aantal oude rumbapioniers, onder andere Papa Bikunda die in 1948 al in de groep van Wendo zong.
