Hello Brad, We love your video. We are rebuilding a RE5R05A out of a 2012 Nissan NV3500 5.6 V8. The the forward clutch burned up after a valve body replacement(remanufactured and programmed to our van). The reason we replaced the valve body was the internal gear position sensor had a short to ground and was blowing a fuse. The challenge we are having is next to no clearance on the forward clutch. We are also using an ATSG service manual. The ATSG manual says this clutch has no components that are adjustable for this clutch. Our snap ring is .071" and the pressure plate is used and is the same thickness as the original 16 teeth .160". We have compared all frictions and steels to the original parts and they are the same thickness. We have taken both pistons in and out several times, and now they are both installed with no seals and no snap ring and we have assembled the transmission several times following all the steps to the letter. I'm considering having .040 machined off the forward pressure plate. We are a food service fleet on St. Thomas US Virgin Islands and don't have a lot of local resources or experience on this unit. Any thoughts? I would be happy to pay you to help me get out of this pickle.

Hi Bill, The only thing that comes to mind is you might have some wavy steels of frictions. Make sure they are all flat. I've never come across this problem before. Let me know I'll see if I can find out anything else.

Everything is flat and all .060" I notice the forward cltch piston does sit flat on the side goes in the but rather has .160 inch gap around outer circumference the one in your video appears flatter on the bottom same thing with a piston I found eBay with only 1 problem there mine is 16 lugs and there's is 18 lug

@@billmurphy1319 The only thing I can think of (with out having the transmission in front of me) is there any damage inside the case, where the piston sits. Is it getting held up by some deformity. Its hard to diagnose the problem without seeing it. Hope this helps. double check how everything sits and try to figure out what's holding it up. That's the best I can do from here.

You made this look so easy! I realize it's not an easy thing though. But I have an RE5R05A in my truck and with the right tools I wouldn't hesitate to take on this job now. The reason I became interested in transmission rebuilds was because my model year is affected by SMOD. I replaced my radiator as a preventative measure and now I shouldn't have to worry about the coolant mixing with the ATF but it seems like finding shops/people these days that perform automatic transmission rebuilds is becoming harder and harder. Rebuilds also seem to becoming a "lost art". I want to learn more and will keep watching. Thank you very much! Subbed...

Thanks again for the time you spent on these videos Brad! The people I was going to build for found a used unit for less than what I was able to source the parts for. I did reassemble the one I took apart (with plenty of help from the videos) and torqued everything as instructed. Someone had already been inside of it as it had a new band (looked completely dry, like it had not been soaked) , the smaller of the two pump gears was upside down, and again with the band it was too tight (holding the drum from easily turning). I will store the transmission and slowly purchase the parts to complete the overhaul, then just find someone that needs it. I also have my eye on an arbor press that I will pull the trigger on soon. I was still curious if you had to replace any of the clutch pistons other than the molded ones.......Rosco

good afternoon, thank you for sharing your knowledge which helps us a lot in the repair of the re5r05a, I have a question in video No3 at minute 6.30 it talks about a lock that the transmission has, this one I have has the space to place the lock but I didn't have it, they took it apart a while ago and possibly they forgot to put it in, now I don't have it. My question is CAN I ASSEMBLE IT WITHOUT THIS INSURANCE OR SHOULD I GET ONE WHICH I DON'T KNOW WHERE I CAN BUY IT? If you would be so kind as to tell me what I can do. thank you and happy afternoon

That is an anti-rattle "spring" Not necessary for operation of the transmission. you might get a slight rattle I can't remember in what gear but the only time you would notice it would be driving next to a building with your window down.

If you don't have a programmer then vehicle has to be towed to a Nissan dealer for programming. Also have dealer check ECM at the same time to make sure everything has the latest updates.

Great set of video! Super Helpful! I have my transmission in a million pieces on my bench, I was wondering about clutch disc clearances, I replaced all the friction discs and steels. They seem to be too tight. So I was looking for specs, the specs i found were around double what I have with the new discs... (.045"-.065" interweb specs, not from a service manual) I have .025" So here's the question- Is there a way to get these in spec? ok ok 2 questions... If leave it at .025", will there be any issues with the new clutches burning out?
Definately going with an external cooler after this!

      high/low-rev, 0.040 to 0.060
      Direct 0.060 to 0.075
      Rev 0.045 to 0.065
      Forward brake 0.040 to 0.055
