      I'd refrain from using the "evil" term as a leftist. The idea that some people are just out to hurt people and can't be reasoned with is a far-right conception. People are always like that because of their environment.

    • @douglaslangley9251
      @douglaslangley9251 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@TheTheThe_ I would disagree with that premise. How is that a far right notion? I never said that they were unreachable either. I just said the rabid base that defends every action must be either racist, stupid, or evil. An "evil" person can be helped. Plenty of stories of neonazis or kkk members coming back to society after realizing how evil they were being. Evil doesnt have to mean unreachable, it can very easily refer to someone who was convinced at a vulnerable time or brainwashed.

    When everyday civilians talk about how they'd be ready to deal with an active shooter, I think about Chris Kyle, the Navy Seal sniper.
    On the day he died, he and a friend took a Marine to a range in an attempt to help him cope with his PTSD. Unfortunately, the Marine shot and killed both of them and drove off in Kyle's car.
    Kyle was a Seal. He and his friend were both armed, and he had some of the best military training in the world. They were also aware that this guy was mentally unstable. No one could have been more prepared for a shooter scenario, but it still wasn't enough. Both of them still had their guns in their holsters with the safeties on when they died.
    So when some gun-toting right-winger talks about being a hero when someone starts shooting, it's very hard to believe them.

    16:40 - the more nuanced aspects of Death Wish and Dirty Harry in the 1970s is also evident in First Blood, which as a Slate article once pointed out is almost a full-blown anti-war leftist film - and they mention it at 21:30 he literally is fighting off sadistic rural cops and yokel national guard dipshits. The franchise shifted him to the various anti-communist cold warrior plots. It's the sequels and remakes that water down the narratives to thin plots as a basis for relentless stylized gory shoot-em-ups.

    I love that when people describe active shooter hero scenarios, not a single one of them is willing to acknowledge the reality of regardless of what an awesome, Navy-SEAL trained elite badass who totes killed Osama and can handle it you claim to be, more shooters makes a more confusing scenario for 1) other hero types, 2) police officers, assuming they show up and 3) the fucking original gunman. Even if you're not shot by the presumably one active shooter, you can easily then be killed by police or another "hero," and suddenly a situation with ONE active shooter everyone can try and get away from, you have people scrambling to escape two, ten, fifteen people shooting at each other with guns, all of which are now considered active shooters by the police.
    Even if you were (you aren't) as good as you claim, if you're so special, not many others can be, but every one of them can have a gun. And when the bullets start flying, nobody can tell the "good" active shooters from the "bad" ones, even a trained police officer. Much less the guy grappling at the last bastion of male machismo when his wife took over grilling at the local church cookout.

    The best video I saw about the "good guy with a gun" was Jordan Klepper's experiment. He took a test where he was placed under similar circumstances to a school shooting and things went horrible, the video shed light on a lot of the issues that this "hero" might face, like the confusion between shooters and people running away, or the shooters and the "good guy with a gun". It's kinda insulting when a fat fuck who trains 2 times a week at a gun range thinks that he can do the same job as a Police man or a someone from a SWAT unit.
    It's kinda like how you think you're ready for a fight since you learned how to throw a punch or two in boxing classes but you lose your shit as soon you enter the ring, it's just something that you need to drill constantly or otherwise you will lose the edge. It requires the attention and dedication that only a man WORKING in that field can bring.
    I am not saying that there's anything wrong with training with guns for self defense, I am just saying that the "good guy with a gun" isn't good enough to work on it's own.

    The whole "good guy with a gun" thing was more about armed civilians. The cops have a truly horrible record when it comes to these mass shootings. Their usual response is to "contain" the situation until SWAT arrives. What that means is they right off *everyone* in the building or general area. Their were something like five other cops who arrived at the school and hid behind their cars.
    If we can't expect them to go in and actually - you know - fight then what are the police for exactly? We don't need police to write us parking tickets. They are there to take a bullet so regular people don't have to.

    As some one who takes self-defense very seriously. I would never judge someone else for not doing some when your or some elses life is on the line. Having to activially decided "Should I try to stab him, or can he be reasoned with" with no other clues about what the fuck is going on, is not easy. That's soley from my perspective where I've thought a little how to deal with simular situations before, and my moral code allows those options.
    All that said, I think we as people have to get past the super-hero idea. That one person can take on the world, we need to be showing real heros, people who are able to work together or make a difference toward a goal. The problem is the super-hero fantasy is the answer to a society of people that feel helpless and simultansly responsible to save to the world, we want to be superman or at least saved by him.
