I know there's tuning and voicing issues, but I was so excited about getting the percussion working that I wanted to record it playing something. Now I'm going to disassemble it to finish and decorate the case. I'll deal with the issues as I put it back together.
when I got all its pipes planted and (more or less) voiced and tuned, I was amazed at its capabilities. The variety of timbres coming out of it was more than I expected.
@@podenco2 I got the machine fully functional and posted a few more videos including the glockenspiel. Now that it's all functional, I totally took it apart so I can finish it and tie up the wonky bits.
@@rimbeaux I currently have designed and 3d printed an organ I hope to post videos of soon. The only problem is… I’m on vacation. :/ I sadly don’t have woodworking skills.
@@rimbeaux you should be proud of it, it's awesome! it sounds like you've got maybe 3 pipes that are causing 95% of the issue, and the rest is charming. Figuring out which pipe might be tough, but it doesn't seem like too extensive of a problem.
@@rimbeaux Kicked out of the house! Your family should be proud of you and help with retuning instead... By the way, I would be happy to own one of these organs, too. Unfortunately I am far from being a talented craftsman and wonder if this may ever happen. Alternatively I could ask someone out there to sell me a fully functional Topsy 3 orgen...
so... about that... I know what I wanted it to sound like and worked hard to get a good hard thumpy bass sound out of that toy bass drum. It sounds amazing in person, you can feel it more than hear it, but the rest of the machine drowns it out. I have to give it more resonance or hit it harder!
A lot of it is either scrap I had lying around or normal wood from a hardware store. The beaters for the snare drum and the cowbell are piano hammers, but the magic is in the pallet magnets. Those are the things powering the drum beaters -- they're electromagnets that cause an arm to swing. There's about 100 of those inside the wind chest and they act as valves. Then there's the electronics that convert midi signals to drive the magnets.
@@ChinaAl it's midi. I think punched music is amazing, but I just didn't want to spend the time and energy going down that path. Midi is going to be a lot more versatile. If you look at some of my newer videos, you'll see I added a glockenspiel, and it's electromechanical. I'm looking forward to building other electromechanical instruments that can just plug in through midi cables..

Ideal size for putting on a bike trailer or building into a cargo bike!
@jroseborough45 bike trailer sounds like a great idea! It was always meant to be mobile
I kind of like the out of tune parts; they make it fun, almost like the music from a 60's comedy movie.
This is fantastic! You did gooooood! 🎶🎶🎶
Such a lovely sounding doohickey.
Wow this is a great instrument. Best automatic drums I’ve ever heard.
Wow, an impressive well crafted organ, and a clever tune to use the instruments fully..
I'm sure you will please many people with it.

This is amazing
I think so too
Wow, this is impressive. I’m looking forward to your finished project. The drum roll s awesome!

Yes nice roll
LeRoy Anderson would be honored.
Totally awesome 👍
Thanks for posting this awesome video 🙏😍
👍 Ingenious. Loved every minute.
Very cute😍
Here before this goes viral!!!
Nailed it! Lovely!
Haha, really cool!
You are amazing! Wow I wish I could make a busker/street/band organ that good!
@@ThatEverydayEnthusiast it just takes tons of determination and patience

@@ThatEverydayEnthusiast I just ran across this one, I wonder if it's still for sale: th-cam.com/video/yxKmpNujQw8/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely nuts
That is cute
This is so awesome!!
I kind of like the slightly off-tune sound. Makes it sound more charming.
I think slightly off tune is a good thing, but I think this is a little more than slight.
yup, some of those notes are painful. That's why it got kicked out of the house! But I'm still proud of it.

It has its own custom temperament
I love this!
So funny !
This is the first time I've seen an Evans EMAD on an organ

@@rimbeaux If it's resonance you're after, then an EMAD might not be the best choice. Have you tried a single ply drumhead yet?
Needs some tuning and voicing on those pipes
I'm working on it!
Good
Where on Earth do you get the stuff to build these things? I'd like to try my hand at making a homemade pipe organ.

Leroy Anderson smiles from on high I am sure. I was a little disappointed you didn't hand-tool your drums from sheet metal, but nobody is perfect ;-).
Is this MIDI, Paper Roll or book?

@@rimbeaux Cool My own Alan Pell Harmonette was converted to MIDI. But it was originally a cartridge organ.
