  • Liebherr Earthmoving Equipment goes all-electric as Peter Haddock looks closer at its new 916E wheeled excavator created in partnership with Urban Mobility Systems with expert Johannes Paul and its L507E wheel loader with Mario Bican.
The first stop was the 916E, a special conversion with no fewer than four batteries, the largest being able to be lifted out and replaced onsite. Already working in the Netherlands, the 916E electric version has proved to deliver the same performance as its diesel equivalent but with increased energy efficiency.
Johannes: “The increased performance of the 916E relates directly to the efficiency of our electric drive, and of course, being fully electric, it is very quiet, and if it’s not working, it’s not idling.
“With a machine this size, we recognised that doing a full shift of up to nine hours, depending on the application, is very important. So we have included 260kWh of battery capacity with the 130kWh largest of the four batteries capable of being replaced by a fully charged unit onsite.”
“And because the main body of the machine is based on our popular diesel version, operators will be able to benefit from all of the technology and functionality of this popular model.”
It’s certainly a machine for working in low emissions zones and confined spaces and one which will be even more powerful with 3D machine control from the likes of Leica Geosystems, which Liebherr is already offering as a factory fit to its range of crawler excavators.
Moving onto the L507E wheel loader, Peter was keen to understand the power options available on this fully electric version, which is now also being used in the field.
Mario: “With customers using this type of product for different applications, we have designed two battery options for the machine in a modular format that can deliver up to 8 hours of run time. And depending on the charging options available onsite, the L507E will take around an hour and a half to fully charge.”
Like the 916E, the L507e is also based on the popular Liebherr wheel loader range. This model, however, can travel up to 20km/h as standard or with the ’Speeder’ option up to 30km/hr. Thanks to regenerative braking, power is fed back into the battery when travelling downhill.
This video is just the start of our electric journey with Liebherr Group, as there are more interviews to come, and we have created a full 17 minute video covering them all.
These include new cranes, a mobile battery charging unit called Liduro, concrete truck mixers and a concrete mixing plant, which can be seen on our Content For Industry website NOW using this link: www.contentforindustry.com/po...
