- a classic osu! tale: a mapper gets really mad and leads osu! developers to do the unthinkable: develop osu! (...specifically, the editor)
in this video, peppy and pishifat talk about what's changed in osu!(lazer) since the last update, mostly focusing on what spaceman_atlas has been up to
the changelog: osu.ppy.sh/home/changelog/laz...
the lazer download: osu.ppy.sh/home/download
lazer is the next major update to osu!. learn about it: • what is lazer?

The budget for this video is insane, the intro has like $500 worth of printer ink
new printer moment smh imagine not rigging old printers third world country style
hahahahaha
Are you kidding? If you have a printer, each colored A4 page would cost you $0.20 max
@@kotovasiya-tv this guy doesn't know that refillable printers exist
@@kotovasiya-tv Yes, he is indeed kidding.
>peppy started to play osu daily.
>peppy rises up in ranks
>peppy takes the throne from mrekk
>peppy stopped playing and works on the game again.
fun fact is, peppy is actually able to do that, he could be #1 any minute with a couple lines of code :D
lmao imagine

"someone piss me off on reddit, I made a whole bunch updates" is not the opening I expect on a Lazer update video. W devs as always

Peppy's osu! skills
I waited a year for this moment

Lazer updates my beloved
I only love it because of native linux support
All they need to add now is a built in file explorer for skin editing and I'm switching over. The fact that it isn't in the game yet is a very big deal breaker for me since I'm constantly changing my skin.ini and changing the cursor I'm using in a skin. :P
See if you can get in direct touch with a dev. They love this kind of feedback but usually miss them.
already asked Peppy about this issue, he said lazer will have a feature to allow editing beatmaps and skins like you used to be able to.
"why change things?" he said ;
"the game has better control of files. For instance, there's no "songs going missing" and "F5 to refresh" at song select due to the new file management.
Also it saves 10-30% disk space since beatmaps and skins can all share the same files!"
but the main issue with this built-in explorer is that i can't no longer Seeding my beatmaps folder to others, i guess? gotta need a confirmation about this...
@@StackoTra I saw people saying that you actually can with symlinks, but couldn't make it myself as it just basically copied my whole songs folder
Also as someone making a skin for both stable and lazer, I find lazer's way of handling files to be a bit tedious since I have to uninstall the skin I want to update and then install the updated .osk file, other than that I have to compress the skin folder as well unlike back in stable I was able to just hit refresh and see my updated skin right away in-game.
YES 100% !
plus, fix the 'importing duplicate skins' thing

Only thing the editor is missing for me in order to no longer need a Stable install is for beatmap submission to be implemented. Until that's actually implemented, I'm still not going to be using osu!lazer for mapping.
Don't get me wrong, the editor changes are fantastic & I love how it's shaping up so far, but the fact that you still need an install of Stable to even submit maps is the reason why I'm still using Stable for all of my mapping needs.
I agree, I made my first baby steps with mapping and was quite disappointed to see that stable is required for submission.
Oh my god yes daily challenges! One thing that should definitely be a thing is an archive for what the previous dailies were
As an Elite Beat Agents fan, I appreciate the return of Pass/Fail storyboards.
I didn't even realize storyboards could do that, I think that's actually a really cool feature
@@OrangeC7 It's a holdover from the game osu! is based on, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, or Elite Beat Agents.

If I may add something. Don't make the bank name just a dropdown. Make it so you can select by turning the mousewheel, while having your cursor anywhere on the column too. As well as having your cursor just on the textfield box for the bank name, and then turning the mousewheel.
This would be a nice touch to any dropdown menu element in general.
I am not a notable mapper by any means, just mapping casually. But with these changes the only thing stopping me from mapping in lazer too is the ability to upload maps to the web directly from lazer
Facts. Facts.
That speed modifier is enticing enough to make me consider playing lazer aaaaaaa
(mania player btw)
mania gang
lazer has a bunch of mods that are great for practicing too, you should try out OD11 (it's hard)
That's why I feels like other skins feels weirdddd, it's because their hit circles are smallerrrrr
mania needs a option that lets you press youre normal mania keys while the songs playing and it will put those notes into the song when u press a specific key.
bassically, play the song with no note, press a key and it adds a note to that song, keep going till its done, and make changes later
Exactly, rough mapping with your input keys!
this is known as livemapping, it is possible in other editors and it can produce.. well, not good maps, but memes for sure (see lochie bewhy maps)
@@kadoen Yeah I don't think I would use this for the final product, more so to get the rough position and specific key use. It would be a lot quicker to do this then adjust than to select each note and length manually
this is already a thing in osu!stable for those who don't know
@@realsnezki i cant really find a way to do that for mania mode charting
Cool update! Mania got some appreciation too:D. I hope mania lazer editor implements having a keybind for every lane to place objects on instead of using a mouse, in 4K it would be 1 2 3 4 and for higher key so on, similar on how ArrowVortex do it (a stepfile editor).
I never really got into mapping in standard so i like how how the lazer one looks but the one thing i desperately need is to be able to choose the new combo color i want to use instead of it always going in order. There are a lot of BPM changes in some maps i want to try mapping and using specific colors for those are a gamechanger.
TY For the update!
Seriously, this is one of the most dedicated transparent development projects I've seen!
...... No hitsound option without effect volume 0% when >:)
Thank you for the speed rate change hot key
Nice! Been waiting patiently for these.
Daily challenge sounds really nice!
Thanks for working on the beatmap of the day thing. Really cool update.
Exciting! Thanks for doing these videos I think they are amazing
Lazer editor will remain irrelevant to mappers until it allows uploading maps, any editor change that doesn't directly contribute towards that feels like misdirected effort.
i mean yes obviously i know everyone wants submission support but also calling these changes "misdirected effort" seems funny if they take the editor from something "nobody wants to use" (just echoing what people have said) to being "very close to stable's", at least for osu! (again, just echoing others, and not yet talking about mania/taiko/catch those still need work for basic usability)
I have 2 suggestions:
1-Skin editor improvement: If I want to make an object appear even when I hide interfaces, I currently have to use the playfield, which has different set points and it is very annoying to put it exacty in a corner (if not impossible) I think you should either be able to change the set point or be able to change each object individually (Include in interface or not).
2-Make an option to have reverbed half time just like how we have nightcore for DT I think we should also have reverbed for HF, I never play HF because the audio quality becomes shit, but if you make it reverb that will no longer be the case.
Thanks for reading
Really appreciate your works. Keep up the motivation!!
I'm not sure if Peppy was the one that did it but bringing Pishi on this channel was the best decision ever
I cant wait for daily beatmaps!!!
0:25 The central red line on the timeline was changed to be centered above the editor playfield. In changing the spacing by removing the timeline toggles, this change has regressed
I dont know if its intentional, but I don't really see any reason for this change to be reverted. The timeline doesnt necessarily need to be symmetrical, and if anything, would benefit from having more visibility for previous objects
Lazer looking better and better 🙏
change background dim on the pause menu?????
These videos are amazing damn. I don't play osu! that much anymore and I don't have enough time to go back and catch up with all lazer has (I get overwhelmed easily), but I'm really really happy for the new things and tons of Quality Of Life updates new players will have ❤
fire update, can't wait for the next one!
Lazer beatmap editor actually becoming usable? Ive been waiting for this day for so long.
Rotated grid is actually crazy, wonder if it will also be ctrl+h/j able to
Nice work on the editor and progress in general. I actually finally started using the editor very recently as a relatively new Osu!Taiko player and those break moments was exactly something I was wondering about.
I just checked out the new version and I do hope that you one day add the convenience of quickly putting down a Don or Ka by simply pressing the D or K key. Right-clicking and selecting "Rim" definitely slows down the workflow, especially since it also changes the mode from Hit back to Select.
Oh, and it would be nice if we could set subdivisions or the amount of times to drum when a drum roll or swell appears! But I'm sure that must be on the backlog somewhere.
as a person that proudly mains lazer, holy firetruck this update is enormous
and the fact there's _even more_ coming, I'm particularly excited about "daily challenges" since I'll get to play new maps while also having more of reason to improve at the game because of the leaderboards (and iirc rewards?)
in summary, w update, I am now even more hyped for lazer than I already was
edit: hey what the hell is an ASS command? (7:15)

thank you linux user
Yay daily beatmaps is a great concept! It's fun how the idea came from a trackmania player. I hope we'll get to have it available for the other game modes too 😊
5:55 constant speed mod would be great in osu mania for the SVs, plsss
thanks for the update!
the daily challenge will be pretty fun. Glad to see osu! introduced me another number to get addicted to!
Peppy is cooking rn
love these lazer videos!
i'm really glad you make these videos, it really helps me feel like the devs care about the community enough to be transparent.
THANK YOU THANK YOU for the editor! Being able to properly hitsound in Lazer is HUGE, we are getting there!!
I wish these videos had more personal stuff or at least if there was more videos that revolved a bit more about the fun stuff like the ending here, I would have loved to see peppy try the daily challenge fully
This looks so insane and super cool for standard mode, one thing i ll wish they add is a drop down menu on the sameplet for custom hitsounds,i know its not super important but it would make the workflow less manual and more on the automatic side, just a suggestion from me,nice work tho xd
Adding letters to the skin would be awesome, and speed control hotkeys too
Daily challenge seems really nice !
i really like the teaser addition to the editor where you could select "triangle" to make snapping points come up for properly spaced triangles.
this is so good for new mappers that want to start mapping
THANK YOU FOR ALL THESE MAPPING CHANGES
yesssssssssssssssssssssssss im so happy for the editor changes, AMD graphic drivers have recently been updated a few months ago and since ive found out that its got an issue that makes the osu!stable editor crash somewhere on the first settings when creating a map. the only way i have to solve this is downgrade my drivers, eventually handicapping all other games that benefit from graphic driver updates, or using the osu!lazer editor, which i was getting frustrated with cause of the many inconsistencies, the poor hitsound control, the the lack of tools, etc. but this will be a lot more manageable. thank you a lot for your compromise with the game.
The editor updates are a saviour to the lazer editor. Perhabs the most important thing missing is the ability to upload a beatmap.
I started doing a beatmap and to post it as a wip, I needed to intentionally install stable just to upload, which is a great downside.
I don't play much of osu but adding a weekly beatmap challenge (just like weekly demons in gd) would be cool, also this update is probably big so kudos to everyone involved!
hmmm i wonder, will the daily challenge be a map that's available in multiple difficulties or a single difficulty of a specific map? as a person who only recently got back into playing OSU because at the time i stopped it was impossible to find anything that wasn't a pro-level-player map, it would be nice to be able to participate in that, and if it's a single difficulty they would either have to choose one that's ideal for the top end players, which locks people like me out, or one that will make the top level players not even care that the feature exists.
I really hope the map of the day will not be too much like trackmania's cup of the day. I think it should be any scores submitted on the selected map during the day count towards the leaderboard, and are collected at the end of the day, instead of a scheduled time slot. I also hope mods can be used, so that way lower skill level players can play and enjoy a map, while the higher skill players can apply DT or HR to get even better scores
will the beatmap of the day have all gamemodes? would be cool if you had one map for each mode, or rotate between the modes
holy shit the grid customization is SO GOOD
sliderend selection pls
I play lazer since last year and because i didn't used to play stable the lazer feels better to me, BUT sometimes i want to play some stable and i can't transfer my lazer songs to stable, just the other way around, idk if im dumb or i really just cant
this is ALL I've been waiting for
A tool for smooth slider velocity changes eventually would be INSANEly useful!!!
dangereoooous jungle - laur reference in the intro
Nothing better than coffee and an Osu!Lazer update at 3:00 AM
You should add a feature where you can choose a certain skin to be applied to a certain mode, for example.
project shikigami for osu mania, and another skin thats not project shikigami, on another mode, so you dont have to repeated keep switching between skins just to play a specific mode.
omfg this is quite satisfying to see
Taiko relax mod is something that I was really waiting for, but can we also have a setting on relax/ taiko mod that changes all the colors of the notes to same color? (Like black and white?) Like a monocolor mod? I would love that so much
I wish that there was combo splashes in lazer.
6:43 iirc, I Can Be Your Friend from VeggieTales also does this as well! it’s a really obscure map but it has a really fun SB to look at haha
not being able to customize the hitsounds of sliderends was killing me i hope its fixed omg
They got rid of the dot.
Finally the editor is usable!
Kudos to u/pritielvis for giving so much feedback and constructive criticism that made lazer so much better
I just love to see how dedicated the devs are, and how open source can make this game better
Will the daily challange streak thingies be only shown in lazer? or will they also be shown on the main site? I think it'd be really cool to see that on the main site aswell
I already use Lazer bc there is no other Linux option. My one frustration is the hashed file system that I can't edit. I want to be able to swap out and even extract the audio from the filesystem, but I can't.
I still wish I could create new difficulties at different speeds of a map (the way osu! trainer works) because having that other local leaderboard is important
This update is like everything i can think of that I could've asked for.
5:15 thanks you scientist yesss
This may sound stupid but what if you could give a linear speed and rotation speed to the editor grid for a section of the map? Perhaps even acceleration/deceleration?
This is awesome. If Depth ever gets rankability then Ill probably become a depth main as its easily my favorite mod next to barrel roll.
I love using the fun mods, definitely gonna try some traceable when I get on
Lazer broke the hold bodys on many skins pls fix
Any idea when bookmarking will be added to the lazer editor?
Wait this new daily challenge is actually pretty interesting
these videos are great
the only thing keeping me away from lazer is lack of UI customization and builtin support for stream overlays so that i can add them to OBS as a browser source (i dont want anymore windows polluting my desktop environment)
wasn't some basic overlay stuff implemented already? I'm not 100% certain but I thought they added it a while ago, as rudimentary as it was
5:54 Thank You peppy and the rest 🙏
Will daily challenge be accessible to players of all skill levels? I can only handle 3-star or lower maps
I still have big offset issue. On some maps I need to set offsets around 15ms
is there any video of how to make/changes in the Lazer for optimization for low pc?
ik this ain't important to y'all but I need some guide cus Lazer client sometimes freeze and sometimes there's a glitched audio too for my pc.
DAILY CHALLENGE!! COTD FOR OSU LETS GOOOOOOO
Still waiting for mods to give pp (literally the only thing that will get 90% rather than 2-5% of people on lazer) can’t even play lazer with classic mod (play like stable) without it removing my pp
Classic lowers pp because it doesn't take acc for sliders so it's literally easier
Stable also uses classic mod by default. Its just that for some reason, classic mod in lazer is still unranked.
Yea, the mods that make lazer unique aren’t ranked and I can’t play osu the normal way (with classic) so theres 0 point for me to swap to lazer. I get that it’s nice for mappers and tournaments but that’s literally it, theres way more players expecting things from osu than the handful of mappers who keep getting spoiled. They would make lazer submit ranked plays in januari of 2024, that schedule was almost 6 months ago and theres still no new mods ranked for pp. Even if they make them severely underranked pp wise atleast make every mod ranked. You can always make it worth more later on.
@@JPMRYThe normal way to play osu!lazer is without the classic mod, I'm sorry. It's called that for a reason.
On the other thing, I assume they don't do that because what's the point in adding unnecessary calculations to mods people have no interest in using? I assume they gauge what mods to rank based on if they can get enough opinions that they will actually get used. Especially important for the Fun mods, where some of them actively make the gameplay experience comically agonizing
@@squiddu Why add the mods to the game if your not gonna rank them. Also, I was talking about the DT slider like 1.2x and 2x aswell as the Difficulty Adjust mod where people can change AR, CS, OD, HP. As well as the relax mod. As for playing osu the 'normal way'. Lazer is agonizing to play if you want to fc a map compared to stable. You receive less acc and more misses but the pp is the exact same as stable. Also, missing 1 note in a 9000 note map will half ur pp with the current pp system so theres even less reason to play lazer. Theres zero benefits to opening lazer other than having more mods to choose from and those mods are literally all unranked.
One thing that annoys me in the osu lazer mania editor is that you cannot zoom in/out of the track like in osu, so it is much more time consuming to map imo
