I have the 2” variety. Works great, sharp image.

Yep, much sharper, and brighter, than I expected, far superior to solar film

i was always told that if you use filters only on the focuser side that the sun can still heat up the internals of the telescope and that your risking damage without a solar filter at the primary opening. is there any protection from this?

I think because its a small refractor, it wont allow that much light or heat in, so the prism inside the Herschel wedge directs the heat and light away so its safe. In a reflector/newtonian, the full energy of the sun will go onto the secondary mirror, that's why they need a filter at the primary opening. You can only use a solar/herschel wedge on a refractor.

@@NickCookOnTheNet dont forget that magnifying glasses are refractors. looking at refractor theory, the beam focuses internally before the secondary. that would just freak me out. doesnt feel right to me. i would have to do more research. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refracting_telescope#:~:text=The%20objective%20in%20a%20refracting,converge%20upon%20a%20focal%20plane.

A Herschel wedge is the safest way by far, far safer, secure and superior to solar film etc

    ¡Hi! I have a redcat71 and a lunt herschel wedge (2"), and I can't focus the sun. I've tried with extensor rings but I can't solve it. ¿Would u help me please?

Hi, have you tries using a Barlow to help with focus? I need to do that with some cameras

Is the Redcat a Petzval? My understanding is that a Herschel wedge should not be used with a petzval

@@richards3192 I'm sure the Redcat is a petzval design. Might be worth asking William Optics though about using a Herschel wedge with one

@@NickCookOnTheNet Yes, I checked, so Enrique may have two issues, insufficient backfocus compared to a standard refractor (only 55mm so cannot accomodate a wedge) and also it is generally not recommended to use a wedge with a petzval, the rear lens element will take the concentrated light beam and may be damaged

Does the sun look yellow/orange through the lens? Or did you tweak your image to make it look orange? Thanks.

Hi Mark, it's white through the lens. The orange colour I add through Photoshop.

@@NickCookOnTheNet ok, thanks. I like the Orange color. That’s what I get with a basic white light filter. However, I am ready for some sharper images. Worth the extra cost.
