    How did you not pick Vektor for 2016? Terminal Redux has to be the most important thrash record in the 21st century, by actually re-innovating the genre.
    Warbringer's last 2 albums have also been some of the best new thrash albums, throwing in some heavy metal, black metal, and even a little "prog" (akin to ...Justice), rather than just going standard / cross-over like Power Trip, Toxic Holocaust, Iron Reagan, Municipal Waste etc.

  • @hellsunicorn
    @hellsunicorn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Thrash metal never totally disappeared, there were some underground acts in Northern Europe that were keeping the old style alive, and by 1997-1999 you get the first signs of a revival with Sweden’s Cranium playing vintage 80s speed/thrash and taunting the declining Grunge scene. Even though it might not be selling as well now as it did in the late 80s, I’d argue that musically speaking, the thrash scene is stronger than ever.

    I love Voivod, but was quite surprised to see the song from 1991. In early 90s, Voivod drifted away from Thrash and did some (in my opinion great) prog rock/prog metal albums. Also, Vektor is great, 2009’s Black Future or 2011’s Outer Isolation should be included on this Thrash list imho. But thanks for including Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, Haunted, Annihilator, Metallica, Overkill (even if I would have chosen either Years of Decay 1989 or Ironbound 2010 instead of the groovier stuff of mid 90s) and Voivod has its thrash roots as well, so it is one hell of a list!

    My dream is to make a Thrash Metal/Speed Metal band with a few Groove and Prog elements here and there but not much. Inspired by the sound of the classics that I love, albums like Kill Em All, Painkiller, Peace Sells, and even some Cowboys from Hell songs. But with less growly vocals I want someone like Sebastian Bach from Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
    But I also want to add more technical elements from bands like Racer X, with all that fast alternate picking shredding. Adrenaline up our butts. I want to bring back that raw 80s Metal sound
    And hopefully become somewhat successful lol I can dream. I’m a tired of the Djent and Death Metal sound

    I was huge into thrash metal in the 80s, but of all the genres(well not all of the, because I don't like all of them) thrash is the genre I get bored of the most. The problem with thrash metal is that it's too limited, mostly by the fans. It's like there are these perimeters thrown about around the genre that if you go outside of you're no longer thrash and you're despised for it. The moment a band does an album that isn't as thrashy as the one before fans get all upset about how they aren't thrash any more. It's so fucking tiring listening to fans say "at least Overkill, Testament, etc., stayed thrash.", or go on about the big 4. I only listen to earlier thrash out of nostalgia, but I get bored so quick, except I listened to Nuclear Assault today and they still kicks ass. But I still go back to my old death metal, grindcore, doom metal albums, black metal and traditional metal albums and I'm never bored of them. I consider Death Metal and black metal kind of limited vocally, but not musically. You can do so much with the music of death metal, and black metal and it's still death metal.

  • @HellbillyHalloween

    ...Thrash and heavy metal are worlds apart. I'm not a big fan of thrash metal, but in no way am I criticizing it. To me, thrash metal was invented for groups to start on. When you first pick up a guitar, you go out there and you can play thrash metal. That's a great thing. But it seems to me that thrash metal bands suddenly develop the need to become more sophisticated, and at that point, they stop being thrash metal and become, I suppose, a little more mature in their playing. There are a lot of heavy metal bands around today, but unfortunately, to me, a lot of them tend to sound the same, a replica of a California band or a replica of Scorpions. It's very important that a band has its own character."
    - Glenn Tipton, Guitar For The Practicing Musician, January 1989

    • @Gregbaltzer
      @Gregbaltzer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can agree with Glenn to a point, but there were some thrash metal bands that could play exceptionally well and still remained thrash eg. Coroner, Forced Entry, Testament. It really depended on the band and what they were hoping to accomplish with their music. having said that to me thrash can be one of the most boring genres because it feels limited in what you're allowed to do as a band. When I want to mellow out thrash isn't mellow enough and when I want something extreme thrash isn't extreme enough. it just sits there in the middle and I rarely listen to it except for out of nostalgia.

    I don't think thrash is dead, but it's definitely not in your face like it was in the 80's. It succumbed to the same fate as did heavy metal / hard rock in general -- changing tastes in popular culture and the advent of Seattle's grunge rock scene. There's lots of up-and-coming thrash bands out there, but I don't think they'll reach the lofty heights that Metallica reached.

    Metal in all its genres is not dead. it has never been.it shrank in many aspects. And the main aspect of all: the movement is different in every single country.

    “Thrash” was a media created term that was being put up vs “Speed Metal” as far as how to label the burgeoning new movement of metal back in the early -mid 80’s. Black Metal and Death were just lurking in the shadows at the time - still awaiting their further genesis in the later 80’s and 90’s. Thrash vs Speed was more a battle of names and formats - like VHS vs Beta back in the video tape wars. And Thrash just won out as it had more power than Speed or Progressive Metal. But what happened by the 90’s was the coming of Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, and many others who never submitted to the altar of Thrash and wanted more extreme music as well and Death Metal would eventually become, As I personally see it, as the new Thrash (flag wavers of the Metal flag of war). Or just plain Metal as it is commonly played and popular;y known among the contemporary youth and fans.

    I wouldn't consider Soulfly thrash metal. But that's just my opinion. Havok are underrated.

      I actually never ever considered them Thrash Metal as well, yet wanted to make sure to include them here since most people actually consider them Thrash Metal (or at least partially Thrash Metal). I guess this was my (failed?) attempt to be fair haha

      They are not thrash, but is Max from Sepultura, even so they are not thrash, but they have a good song and is this one: th-cam.com/video/sEolhPCh-Jw/w-d-xo.html

      Sepultura was thrash metal on the cusp of death metal. Soulfly was some kind of mix of thrash metal with Brazilian tribal music. So not pure thrash in either case. But maybe close enough.

      Pantera are The Godfathers of groove metal which is heavy influenced by thrash but still is a genre of its own.
      Pantera is not a classical thrash band, they overlap genres, that’s why they’re not included here.

    In a way it is sad that the biggest, most famous heavy & thrash metal bands in 2020s are STILL from the 70s or 80s. Metallica, Maiden, Priest, Megadeth, Sabbath and Slayer (though they have both retired now, I guess?). But that is not the fault of new bands, there are lots of interesting post 2000 bands out there like Vektor, Obscura, Gorod, Spirit Adrift… the problem is, while these are great bands and they do something different and don’t just copy the style of their predecessors, they are so specialized that only small segments of metal community are interested in them. Despite the high quality, there are so many different great bands that hardly any metal fans have time to concentrate on all of them so we simply choose our own favorites and the bands don’t grow as big as before. So, no, metal is not dead, but it is underground. Personally, I think that is good, metal is not supposed to be mainstream, I like the fact that it has attitude and edge and it is not for everyone😏🤘🏻
