The hard truth: it was an end of credits joke in a video game. Rockstar GTA doesn't exactly have air tight continuity. It was really good storytelling with only a a few stumbles during the 3d era. But when you look at the series, as a whole, you can tell why they sort of treat each game as a new story with it's own continuity. Other games are part of the timeline, but more as easter eggs than a series. GTA online really wrecked the last of any real focus on storytelling. GTA 3 was a lot of great ideas. But the story was just there to as a framing mechanism for the random chaos. Though, I will admit. Game theories are fun.

I also think claude did not kill maria cause in this mission if you shoot maria and kill her the mission will be failed even though you have already destroyed the helicopter with catalina. Thats mean the aim of the misson was to kill catalina and also saving maria. Thats mean claude willingly saved maria and thus he did not killed her and the gunshot was to make the ending cool and to shut maria's mouth.

Even Rockstar dev from the sound office team confirmed that Maria had a longer and more annoying sequence of a dialogue, so to shorten it, they just added a shot for a better finale, they never considered to kill her. Plus we can hear a news report before the titles saying two man and a woman left that damb. So that's more of a sound design decision, we can hear something as same as this in GTA IV once credits are over, Niko will pronounce: "So this, is what the dream feels like. This is the victory we longed for..." And that's really it, except GTA III's variant of finale starts in the beginning, and IV's only by the end of the screen titles, would've been much better if they added a shot in the end of the titles in GTA III as well, but we got what we got. And again, no, Claude didn't kill Maria (Either way it would've been stupid to rescue her, literally throwing away half of your money and all of the weapons.)
Maybe Claude was killed by Toni Cipriani as a revenge for Salvatore's death. In the story line (the hostile NPC in st marks doesn't count), the mafia didn't do anything to kill claude. Probably because he was dealing blows after blows to the colombian cartel. So it made no sence to kill him as long as the cartel is still a threat. But as soon as this threat disappeared (with Catalina's death, the cartel was greatly weakened), Tony took the opportunity to avenge his boss, recover Maria and strengthen his position as the new Don of Liberty City's mafia.

It’s satirizing modernity, this collective end of history malaise that we’re experiencing. Where nothing is serious & everything sucks. When the nameless protagonist silences Maria with a bullet that’s the cherry on top. The protagonist is a nameless silent figure that allows the player to indulge in fantastic violence, the game developers are commenting on the violent tendencies inside all of us. Later games start to take the characters & story lines more seriously, he doesn’t even have a name is this game claude is just something they came up with for San Andreas. If you play the serious backwards starting with V, then iv then San Andreas, when you get to iii the game seems crude & pointless. But that’s exactly what the game is supposed to be, crude & pointless. GTA iii was the first video game where you don’t even have to do any of the missions, you can just drive around & kill people. When you first open the game manual that came in the box it says “welcome to liberty city, the worst place in America.” Claude isn’t supposed to be a good guy, he kills kenji just because Donald love asked him to. Maria isnt supposed to be a likable love interest, there are many moments in the game dialog where she’s supposed to come off as insufferable. She’s even the reason the mafia is trying to kill you. None of the characters in the game are supposed to be likable, they’re all souless criminals. You’re supposed to laugh when Claude shoots Maria to silence her during the end credits, because Maria is an annoying twat. That’s one of the things I actually don’t like about newer grand theft auto games, they try to make cj & Niko into the “good guys” but there was never any doubt that Claude was the bad guy.
