In the absence of the injured local star Ulrike Meyfarth, the Bulgarian Lyudmila Andonova and the Polish Danuta Bułkowska broke their national records with 1.99 and 1.97, respectively. A few weeks later, Andonova set a new world record with 2.07 in East Berlin, while Bułkowska’s Polish record stood for 29 years, only being beaten in 2013. Both jumpers were absent from the Los Angeles Games in August due to the Eastern Bloc boycott, with the Olympic title going to Meyfarth with 2.02.
